Arkansas State University honors Distinguished Service Award recipients

JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) – Arkansas State University celebrated its annual Distinguished Service Awards ceremony Thursday evening, highlighting the remarkable achievements of its students.

Among the prestigious accolades presented was the R. E. Lee Wilson Award, a symbol of excellence and service.

The distinguished recipient of this year’s R. E. Lee Wilson Award is Natan Gomez, presented by Perry Wilson, the great-great-grandson of R. E. Lee Wilson.

Gomez’s exceptional academic record, marked by a cumulative grade point average of 4.0, stands as a testament to his dedication and scholarly prowess.

Throughout his tenure at A-State, Gomez consistently earned recognition, including placement on the Chancellor’s List for all four years.

Gomez will graduate from A-State in May with a degree in biotechnology from the Beck College of Sciences and Mathematics. He was selected from a group of six DSA winners honored at the ceremony.

Reflecting on the significance of the award, Natan Gomez remarked, “The biggest meaning is, my service, my awards, they had an impact on people. They changed people’s perspectives and people’s lives. At the end of the day, that was the most rewarding thing in college, was the friends that I made and the people that I impacted. So, that really is what the medal represents to me.”

Other DSA honorees included Bailey Blackmon of Perryville, Christopher L. Crutchfield of North Little Rock, Ann Long of Cape Girardeau, Mo., William “Garrett” Partain of Lepanto, and Khushi Singh of Bryant.

The R. E. Lee Wilson Award, presented annually, recognizes Arkansas State University’s most outstanding graduating senior. Recipients are chosen based on their exemplary character, unwavering determination, active involvement, and exceptional academic achievements.

The names of Wilson Award winners are permanently listed on a display outside Centennial Hall in the Carl R. Reng Student Union.

Previous Wilson Award recipients formed a Wilson Fellows Chapter of the A-State Alumni Association that has funded a scholarship program. Wilson Award winners receive a post-graduate scholarship from the chapter to be used for additional education after graduation from A-State.

Jack Wagoner, attorney who challenged Arkansas' same-sex marriage ban, dies

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Attorney Jack Wagoner, who helped successfully challenge Arkansas’ ban on same-sex marriage before state and federal courts, has died. He was 62.

Wagoner died in Little Rock on Tuesday, said Bruce Tennant, an attorney who worked with him at his law firm. Tennant said a cause of death was not yet known.

Wagoner represented same-sex couples who challenged a constitutional amendment that Arkansas voters put in the state’s constitution in 2004 defining marriage as between a man and a woman. A state judge in 2014 struck down the amendment as unconstitutional, which led to more than 500 same-sex couples marrying before the Arkansas Supreme Court put the ruling on hold.

The state Supreme Court didn’t rule on whether the ban was constitutional before the U.S. Supreme Court legalized gay marriage nationwide in 2015. A federal judge also struck down Arkansas’ ban, but put her ruling on hold.

At the time of the rulings, Wagoner predicted that gay marriage would eventually be legal nationwide.

“It’s pretty clear where history’s heading on this issue,” Wagoner said.

Cheryl Maples, an attorney who had also represented the couples, died in 2019.

Tennant said the same-sex marriage case was an example of the types he focused on. Wagoner had also working on cases involving nursing home neglect and abuse.

“He always wanted to fight for the little guy,” Tennant said.

Wagoner was also one of the attorneys who represented a divorced Arkansas man who had been prohibited from having overnight visitation with his child in the presence of his long-term domestic partner. The state Supreme Court in 2013 reversed that decision.

Wagoner is survived by his wife and two daughters.

FAYETTEVILLE – Arkansas women’s basketball head coach Mike Neighbors and staff have signed 6-4 forward Vera Ojenuwa. The Lagos, Nigeria native spent her freshman season at Barton Community College, where she was a KJCCC All-Conference First Team recipient.

5,541 nautical miles from Fayetteville, Arkansas is the city of Lagos, Nigeria.

For perspective, that’s the equivalent of driving from Bud Walton Arena to Little Rock and back 30 times.

That’s also the hometown of our newest Razorback, Vera Ojenuwa.

A chance meeting at the local juice bar on MLK introduced us to a family member who lives locally and mentioned he had family that was in our area.

We learned from Osahen that Vera that had moved to the states to play basketball and began college at Barton County Community College in Kansas. A few phone calls to her Coach Alan Clark and we knew we wanted Vera to become a future Razorback.

Her accolades… were the obvious draw…

But the real clincher was her official visit to campus. Vera is kind, warm and dedicated to her game and her education.

All-Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference First Team selection, being one of two freshmen on the 10-member first team
For Barton CC, started in 27 of 30 game appearances, averaging 13.6 points and 10.4 rebounds per game (both paced the team) with a 47.8 field goal percentage
Her 10.4 rebounds per game average was the sixth best single season average in program history and her 311 total rebounds marked the eighth most in program history
Tied for third in rebounds per game and fourth in field goal percentage in the conference
Logged four 20-point games, including a career-high 28 points and 23 rebounds (fifth most boards in school history) for a double-double vs. Pratt
Registered 19 games with 10+ rebounds and was a walking double-double with 16 throughout the season
Tabbed Region VI Women’s Basketball All-Tournament Team
Named KJCCC Player of the Week and National Player of the Week after shooting 57 percent from the field, averaging 25.5 points and 20.5 rebounds per game in a pair of Barton victories
Helped team set program record, allowing just 54.0 points per game and logged the fourth best defensive rebounding average (30.7) in school history, as Ojenuwa had 7.3 defensive boards per game
