The new model even reintroduces a physical button to smooth and streamline device interaction.

For anyone on a budget, Xiaomi’s Mi Bands come highly recommended. We even awarded the last generation with an Editor’s Choice. We’ve yet to review the Xiaomi Mi Band 8, but we’re confident the tracker offers the same reliable experience we’ve found in the past, with a few new perks. For starters, the Mi Band 8 introduces a slightly more elevated look and is designed to be wearable as a necklace or attached to a gym shoe. That means more versatility in how you track your stats throughout the day.

A very solid entry-level device, the Xiaomi Mi Band 8 tracks steps, distance, and calories to VO2 max, blood oxygen saturation, heart rate, sleep, and stress. In addition to these basics, the band also offers tracking for more than 150 unique activities. It even features an upgraded accelerometer, so users can workout alongside movement-based fitness courses in the Mi Fitness app. Unfortunately, the band does not feature built-in GPS, but it does offer connected GPS if you’re willing to pocket your phone for runs and rides.

The band also boasts a battery life of 16 days with regular use or six days with the always-on display enabled. The band’s colorful 1.62-inch AMOLED display may look a lot like that of the Mi Band 7, but the latest model now has a 60Hz refresh rate and brightness of up to 600 nits. Coupled with the device’s quick-release strap, the effect is a more attractive and user-friendly device.

What makes it stand out

  • That price tag: The Mi Band 8 is a good fitness tracker at a great price. It’s at least $30-$40 cheaper than most trackers while offering many of the same features.

The Huawei Band 7 offers the full gamut of basic fitness tracking plus blood oxygen readings, heart rate tracking, and sleep monitoring. It’s a thin, light fitness tracker with an impressive display for such a low cost.

HUAWEI surprised us with the HUAWEI Band 6, and the 7 builds on its predecessor’s success. Blurring the line between tracker and smartwatch, it sports a large 1.47-inch AMOLED display with ultra-narrow bezels. The Band also offers improved phone integration, including the ability to answer phone calls on the wrist, music, remote camera control, and message quick reply. The device even features support for NFC payments.

In many other ways, the HUAWEI Band 7 is very similar to the Mi Band 7 — and that’s a compliment. Users will find all-day SpO2 monitoring, sleep tracking, 96 workout modes, menstrual tracking, and more. Though we haven’t yet tested the device in-house, we were quite impressed with the accuracy of the Band 6 and the Band 7 is said to improve the user experience even further.

We tested the sleep tracking function on the HUAWEI Band 6 against various devices, including the Fitbit Sense and Garmin Forerunner 245 Music. The results were spot on. In other words, if sleep tracking is important to you, it’s important to note that we found the previous generation HUAWEI Band to be more accurate than the Mi Band 7.

Above all, HUAWEI’s Band 7 is affordable. The device is available to US shoppers for less than $70 from third-party retailers, including Amazon. You can grab the budget device in four colors: black, green, pink, and red. It is water resistant up to 50 meters and boasts up to two weeks of battery life between charges.

What makes it stand out

Meanwhile, watchOS 10 brought several improvements to Apple’s wellness tools, including mental health features, workout tracking for cyclists, and changes to medication management. The update also introduced a redesigned interface, including glanceable widgets for easier consumption of stats and data. Additionally, Siri can now process queries on the device, including questions about personal health stats. Users can even interact with the Apple Watch Series 9 more efficiently than ever with Double Tap, a one-handed gesture control that completes simple actions with the tap of two fingers.

From apps to notifications, integration with the iPhone is seamless, and users will find every smart feature needed, from on-wrist phone calls to offline music playback. Unfortunately, battery life remains a hindrance even in the latest generation. The Series 9 will last just over its 18-hour claim, though Low Power Mode helps users eke out additional use between charges.

If you want a smartwatch with accurate tracking and tons of third-party app support, the Apple Watch Series 9 is a no-brainer. For a budget-friendly option, the Apple Watch SE 2 ($269.99 at Amazon) drops a few sensors, but it is still a great fitness tracker. On the other end of the spectrum, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 ($759.99 at eBay) offers a similar experience on a much more durable device.

It also boasts Garmin’s top training tools, including Body Battery, Recovery Time, Workout Benefit, Perceived Exertion, Garmin Coach, and more. On the sleep tracking front, the device is packed with data points to help users build better bedtime habits. It’s also the first Garmin device to provide automatic nap detection. We loved the accuracy we found in this arena and how Garmin integrates these stats into broader insights.

Overall, the Garmin Venu 3 is one of the best fitness trackers and a great pick from a trusted brand. It’s pricey but also brings key smartwatch features to the table, such as mobile payments, voice calling, and voice assistant support. The device is also available in two case sizes so users can find the perfect fit for their wrists. It won’t offer the same level of integration as an Apple Watch, but it’s still a great pick for borh iOS and Android phone users.

We also applaud Garmin’s decision to offer the watch in two sizes, a 265 and 265S, with the same retail price. Both sizes also feature music storage as standard rather than as an upcharge. The 265S features a 1.3-inch display with 416 x 416 resolution. The 265S has a 1.1-inch display with 360 x 360 resolution. During our review of the smaller model, we hit around four days of usage with the always-on display enabled. In smartwatch mode, the device can last about two weeks.

The Forerunner 255 added NFC support, Morning Report, and an upgraded heart rate sensor to the mid-range lineup. These features return in the Forerunner 265 series, and the sensor accuracy is fantastic. We clocked highly reliable stats throughout our review period, including heart rate data, sleep tracking, and, of course, GPS tracking. The newest model also adds Training Readiness, a popular Garmin metric for dedicated athletes, which is a great tool to see at this price point.

The price of the Forerunner 265 did jump considerably compared to its predecessor, inching the device out of “affordable” territory. However, $449 is reasonable considering the features you’ll find on board. If budget isn’t a consideration, we were also impressed by the Garmin Forerunner 965.

  • Options for different wrist sizes: The Forerunner 265 is available in a 46mm model and a 42mm 265S model, so everyone can get the perfect fit. Both are the same price and offer music storage.

With real ticking hands, this hybrid watch feels like a classic analog accessory. The aesthetic is completely appropriate for a fancy meal or a night out. Meanwhile, it hides an accurate fitness tracker with some of Garmin’s top tools just a double-tap away.

Navigating the tiny display on the vivomove Sport takes a little getting used to, but we got the hang of it after just a few hours of digging in. Unfortunately, you won’t find a sleep score or built-in GPS here, though you get a connected GPS. We were also excited to see a heart rate monitor in a hybrid, though it’s not nearly as accurate as you’d find on a more traditional fitness tracker.

The Garmin vivomove Sport is the perfect choice if you’re looking for a stylish tracker that blends in wherever you take it. Metallic accents elevate the device, while comfortable silicone bands make it durable for a sweaty workout. Our tests showed around five days of battery life for the hybrid features. After that, the watch would go into an analog-only mode. This mode lets us use the device as a standard watch for about one more day.

Notably, the Oura Ring 3 is not as successful at tracking specific workout data as other options on this list. For example, it doesn’t calculate details like pace or running power. Instead, the Oura Ring 3 simply uses heart rate to identify workouts. It then factors these workouts into your Readiness and Activity scores. It also doesn’t have a screen, which can be a deal breaker for those who want real-time stats throughout their gym session. For the sake of this article, we refer to devices with big displays that prioritize apps and notifications as smartwatches. We refer to devices with small displays that look more like a traditional fitness band as fitness trackers. In reality, many smartwatches have fitness tracking tools, and many fitness trackers have smartwatch features.

In addition to mixing up your workout routine, use spring as an opportunity to start lightening up your meals by packing them with seasonal ingredients. Start TODAY dietitian Natalie Rizzo shares her top tips:

  1. Incorporate more seasonal foods. After a long winter of eating the same foods, your palate is ready for a change! Spring Clean Your Mindset with This Mental Health Exercise

Yes, we are working to propel ourselves forward toward our health goals, but an important part of that process is slowing down and reflecting.

Getting permission not to rush in a world that feels like it’s moving faster than we can keep up is a reminder that most of us need.

“Getting permission not to rush in a world that feels like it’s moving faster than we can keep up is a reminder that most of us need, but how often would we admit that?” says Cheyenne. “ When the to-do list feels long, and we’re trying to get everything done, we often say the opposite, disregarding how we feel, and push ourselves. Yes, we all have deadlines and things that need to be done. But we also need the reminder to take care while handling our responsibilities.”

This can be easier said than done. So Cheyenne offers up a simple exercise to help: Write down the words you need to hear each day to make yourself a priority and work toward your goals. Put them somewhere you see often, like your fridge or bathroom mirror, and recite them out loud daily.

“This is a perfect example of a reminder that seems small, but can come at the perfect time and help us care for ourselves,” she explains. “One of my favorite examples is: Take it slow and don’t rush, your nervous system deserves peace.”

“When you tell yourself the thing you’ve been needing to hear, it allows you to admit the quiet rumbling within you and take the steps you need. It might be admitting ‘I’m tired and will give myself an early night this week.’ Or you’re saying ‘I’m so proud of the way I’ve committed to moving my body everyday.’ Whether you’re cheering yourself on or reminding yourself of what you need, we don’t always slow down enough to hear what we need from ourselves, and this practice is a great way to start.”

Talking out loud to yourself may feel strange at first, but Cheyenne says over time it will help shift your mindset and translate those words into action. “When we hear ourselves recite these words, it’s like we’re planting positive seeds within us. The more we say what we need, the more we remember it, and we’re more likely to follow through and care for ourselves,” she says. “Our actions really start with the words we say to ourselves. Reading them out loud helps us rewire the way we talk to ourselves and that inner shift is exactly what opens the door to transformation.”

Building the No Neck Army: The Army’s Holistic Health and Fitness Program – Modern War Institute

Editor’s note: This article is the seventh in an eight-part series led by retired General James Mingus, the thirty-ninth vice chief of staff of the Army, on transforming the Army to meet the challenges of tomorrow’s battlefield. You can read other articles in the series here.


The battlefield in America’s next war will offer no sanctuary. The war won’t be fought from forward operating bases equipped with elaborate gyms, contractor-provided dining facilities, or coffee shops. The battlefield will be austere, harsh, and unrelentingly violent, with victory only possible by combining physical strength, endurance, and a will to prepare.

The Army’s Holistic Health and Fitness (H2F) program is the bedrock upon which this preparation begins. Winning America’s next war requires an Army that can get to the fight, win the fight, and get home from the fight—a mission profile that demands not just fit soldiers built for endurance, but warrior athletes built for endurance and able to leverage strength, speed, and power, and grounded in sound sleep and nutrition.

Culture Shift Begins with Mindset Shift

For the last several decades, the Army took pride in fielding formations rooted in a physical fitness culture relying heavily on push-ups, sit-ups, and miles of running and ruck marching. Physical training began predictably after saluting the flag at 0630 and ended promptly when the basic exercises, calisthenics, and formation run were complete. It was one-dimensional, unimaginative, boring, and, ironically, lazy. Army fitness during this period was solely focused on physical endurance.

In the early 2000s, however, Army fitness began to change, led by special operations units like the 75th Ranger Regiment, which began experimenting with trending fitness regimens like Gym Jones, CrossFit, and Mountain Athlete. By combining emerging principles from several of these programs, special operations units began designing their own programs, such as the Ranger Athlete Warrior program. The rest of the active Army quickly started to model these programs, and the first H2F pilot kicked off in 2018.

Advances in exercise science and twenty years of war helped reframe the Army’s fitness mindset to encompass mental, physical, nutritional, and sleep dimensions. This mindset shift forms the basis of the H2F culture, changing how we train and care for soldiers. The focus is now on building strength and resilience like professional athletes—or more fittingly, warrior athletes. Where mission endurance was the goal before, tactical athleticism is now the goal, with an emphasis on strength, speed, power, and agility.

You Can’t Fake Results

A key part of any fitness program is the ability to measure its effectiveness, and in only a few short years, the return on investment for the H2F program has been profound. Currently sixty-six brigades have an H2F performance team, which consists of twenty-two professionals: a program director, dietitian, physical therapist, and occupational therapist; seven strength and conditioning coaches; four athletic trainers; one cognitive performance specialist; and six military personnel. By 2029, the program will expand to cover the entire active Army, as well as four states of Army National Guard and two Army Reserve commands.

According to analysis from the US Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine, if H2F had been implemented across the entire Army, over a five-year period it would have added 1,080 deployable soldiers to the fighting force. If that’s not compelling enough, also consider these complementary H2F data points compiled by the Center for Initial Military Training Research and Analysis team after analyzing data from 2019 to 2023:

  • 61 percent decrease in musculoskeletal injury referrals
  • 44 percent decrease in behavioral health profiles
  • 79 percent decrease in substance abuse cases
  • 22 percent decrease in fitness test failures
  • 33 percent increase in expert rifle marksmanship qualification

Expanding the Tools

As part of continuous transformation, the Army is looking for unique ways to leverage technology to enhance the H2F program. Several units are experimenting with wearables like rings and watches that measure sleep efficiency, heart rate variability, and blood oxygen saturation—providing rich data to inform approaches to physical, nutritional, and sleep aspects of fitness. Today, entire Army divisions are turning physiological data into leader decision-making information. A company commander who knows his or her soldiers’ sleep scores, for example, is equipped with data to combine with other information to help select the most well-rested platoon to lead a dangerous mission. Individual soldiers will also learn the correlations that exist between their fueling, recovery, and performance habits, which will help in multiple facets of their personal lives.

The Army is also continually working to improve facilities and services that support H2F. Most units now have access to twenty-four-hour functional fitness gyms on post and many units utilize fitness containers—effectively, gyms in a box. Plans are also in place to build additional facilities to ensure soldiers at every post have adequate equipment to train. To improve nutrition, the Army is experimenting with campus-style dining facilities that will supplement, and in some cases replace, traditional dining facilities—affording soldiers a myriad of quick, 24/7 accessible healthy food options. A no excuse not to work out and no excuse not to eat healthy mentality now abounds across the Army.

Soldiering has no offseason and no time-outs, and wars wait on no one. When America calls, the Army responds. Unlike professional athletes who can vary training volume, intensity, and specific exercises over planned cycles or offseasons, a practice known as performance periodization, soldiers have no such luxury. Tactical athleticism via compound periodization is the goal for soldiers—ensuring peak performance at all times by developing key physical attributes (e.g., strength, endurance, and power) year-round to maximize efficiency, prevent burnout, and improve overall warfighting readiness. The H2F tools highlighted above aid in measuring and maximizing this readiness.

What’s Next?

Imagine two Army squads ascending Colorado’s Pikes Peak carrying fifty-pound fighting loads. Squad A trained to get to the top through push-ups, sit-ups, and miles of running. The soldiers of Squad B are warrior athletes who took the H2F approach. When Squad A’s soldiers finally struggle to the top, they’re just happy to be mission complete and they flop on the ground. The soldiers of Squad B assault the mountain, and when they get to the top, they still have enough juice to rip the arms off their adversaries and steamroll into the next mission. In their post-hike squad photo, they’re all standing tall—straight backs, satisfied smiles, and trap muscles extending inches above their shoulders so they almost appear to have no necks. For them the mission is just getting started, and their smirks seem to say, “Is that it? What’s next?”
