More newborns are suffocating while sleeping unsafely, Pittsburgh nonprofit says

Having a baby is a life-changing experience and can come with parenting advice from just about everyone, even on how to best get your baby to sleep. There’s one subject few should be talking about but should.
“Truly, the most dangerous thing your baby does during its first year of life is sleep,” said Devon George, the program officer for Cribs for Kids, a nonprofit that educates about the dangers of unsafe sleep environments for babies.
If your baby is not sleeping in a safe space, you could be putting them at risk.
“It is a death that we don’t talk about, so people don’t think it’s gonna happen, but it is happening,” George said.
UPMC Magee has been a part of the program for about 10 years, and over that time has helped parents learn the ABCDs of safe sleep: Baby is “alone,” on its “back,” in a “clean” crib, away from “danger.”
“Parents need to know that an adult bed is always too soft and a baby should never be placed on an adult bed,” said Vivian Petticord, the director of Women’s Health Service Line at UPMC.
The thing is, despite the guidelines, George says we’re seeing an increase of newborns suffocating while sleeping nationally and locally.
“Our numbers in Allegheny County are looking like they did like 20 years ago,” George said.
Those numbers, according to the Allegheny County Health Department in 2008, were around 13 deaths a year. Social media, George says, is one reason why we’re seeing the numbers go up.
“Images that show unsafe sleep and encourage that behavior, right? Like if you find your right page and group to follow, then it gives you permission to do that,” he says.
“And I think it’s really important to have that conversation with your pediatrician. You know, they can be helpful,” Petticord said.
Because nothing is more important than the health and safety of your baby.

Mason Rudolph’s number with Pittsburgh Steelers revealed

Mason Rudolph will be getting his old number back with the Pittsburgh Steelers in his second stint with the team. Since Justin Fields left for the New York Jets, Rudolph’s number was open, and he has reclaimed it.
Rudolph wore No. 2 from the time he was drafted with the Steelers to his departure for the Tennessee Titans a season ago. His roster page lists his number as being his old number, No. 2.
Rudolph had other options but chose to return to the Steelers over any other destination. A return to the Titans was on the table for Rudolph.
Rudolph went 1-4 in his starts in 2024, throwing nine touchdowns and nine intercpetions while amassing 1530 over the year. Now, Rudolph is back on the market and the Steelers could be one of his landing spots.
Rudolph’s breakout three games came at the end of the 2023 season, where he led the Steelers from 7-7 to 10-7 and a playoff berth, where they would lose to the Buffalo Bills.
The Steelers drafted Rudolph in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He stayed with the team through the 2023 season after a second lease on his NFL life

Penguins Keep Slim Playoff Hopes Alive

Just when it looked like the Penguins were throwing in the towel and looking ahead to next season, they go ahead and post four straight wins. Thanks to the Eastern Conference being so tight, at the time of their fourth consecutive win, the Penguins were just four points back of the second wild card spot.
The New York Rangers defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets, pushing the Penguins to six points back, but being that close to a playoff spot is a sharp contrast to where they were at the trade deadline.
I can’t believe I’m typing this and everyone has games in hand on them, but the Penguins are four points out of a playoff spot.
— Josh Yohe (@JoshYohe_PGH) March 15, 2025
Upon returning from the 4 Nations Face-Off break, the Penguins went 1-6-1 and found themselves in the basement of the Metropolitan Division. Landing the first overall pick at the upcoming NHL Draft seemed more likely than fighting for a spot in the postseason, but things can swing quickly in the East this year.
The Penguins lost 4-0 to the Vegas Golden Knights on deadline day, but haven’t been back to the win column since. Since their loss in Vegas, the Penguins have gone on to beat the Minnesota Wild, squeak out an overtime win over the Golden Knights, defeat the St. Louis Blues, then thump the New Jersey Devils.
Outscoring their opponents 18-9 in the last four outings, the Penguins are crawling their way out of the bottom of the league. Their playoff odds are still well under 1% according to moneypuck.com, but they aren’t dead yet.
An unexpected common denominator in the Penguins’ winning streak is the return of struggling goalie Tristan Jarry. After being recalled from a stint in the American Hockey League, Jarry has made 120 saves during this four-game win streak with a .930 save percentage.
It’s usually hard to bet against the likes of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, but most of the 2024-25 season has been rough for the Penguins. With less than 20 games remaining, though, they may keep things interesting.
No team in the NHL has played more games than the Penguins, so everyone has games in hand. The odds are still very much stacked against them, but one thing is certain: the Penguins will always be entertaining, one way or another.
