HOLLIS – Edward J. Hodgdon, 74, of Nichols Lane died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2023 on the Maine Veterans’ House in Scarborough along with his loving household by his facet.

Edward was born in Portland on Could 18, 1948, the son of the late Walter E. and Helen M. (Perry) Hodgdon. Following highschool, he enlisted and served in the US Military.

Edward married the love of his life, Linda J. Heikkinen on June 17, 1978 at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church in Portland.

Upon his return residence from the Military, he began working as a truck driver with Songo Shoe for a short while earlier than he began driving for the J.J. Nissen Firm in Portland, a place he held for a few years earlier than the onset of Rheumatoid Arthritis pressured him to retire early. He then grew to become a stay-at-home dad, elevating his two sons.

Edward was a member of the Dirigo Jets Drum and Bugle Corps, enjoying the snare drum.

He was very pleased with his yard and stored it immaculate. Not solely would he mow his garden, however he might typically be seen mowing the neighbor’s garden and would by no means take any cash for his labors.

He beloved hockey, was a season ticket holder for the unique Maine Mariners, a diehard Boston Bruins and New England Patriots fan. He was predeceased by a sister, Virginia Shaw, two brothers, Calvin and Carroll Hodgdon.

He’s survived by his spouse, Linda Hodgdon of Hollis; two sons, Edward P. Hodgdon and his husband Martin Lescault of Scarborough, Peter J. and his spouse, Brooke Hodgdon of Naples; three grandchildren, Darian Hodgdon, Callie Barber, and Patrick Barber; a sister, Barbara Gauthier of California, a sister-in-law, Hugette of Sanford, a brother-in-law, Merton “Bud” Shaw, Jr. of Missouri; and a number of other nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours celebrating Edward’s life will probably be held on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral House, 172 State St. in Portland from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. A memorial service will comply with at 12 p.m. within the chapel. Burial will probably be non-public.

ORONO — Coffee Hound Coffee Co. and the University of Maine have officially licensed a new co-branded coffee: the Maine Black Bears Nitro-Infused Caramel and Cream Coffee. This is the first and only officially licensed “ready to drink” nitro-infused coffee of the Maine Black Bears and is now available for purchase from Freshies at 12 Main Road in Milford. 

Roasted locally in the heart of Maine by Coffee Hound, a veteran-founded and woman-owned company in Brewer, this “ready to drink” coffee will soon be distributed statewide by Central Distributors, a Lewiston-based, family-owned distributor founded in 1934. 

“We are thrilled to be partners with the University of Maine to license and showcase this brand with our other ‘ready to drink’ nitro-infused coffee beverages that will be distributed throughout the state of Maine by Central Distributors,” said Jen Litteral, president of Coffee Hound. 

Coffee Hound has been mass producing their cold brew coffee line since 2019 in partnership with Geaghan’s Brewery, which distributes it in kegs and barrels. Coffee Hound now offers three flavor lines of nitro-infused coffee in cans: a traditional nitro with cream and sugar, a latte with maple syrup and cream and now the officially licensed Maine Black Bear coffee with a touch of caramel and cream.

A Maine eatery dubbed ‘the most famous lobster shack in the world’ where customers line up for hours to buy one of their $36 rolls has officially opened for the season.

Red’s Eats, located on the corner of Water and Main Street in Wiscasset, has served fresh New England seafood for over 80 years.  

The shack has been ranked Maine’s best lobster roll in countless lists and has attracted the likes of Tom Cruise, Lionel Richie and Susan Sarandon for its famous bites.

Red’s Eats opened for the summer on May 1 and for $36 customers can get a roll filled with the meat of two claws and a whole split tail with a side of butter or mayo.

‘They don’t make them like most other places, they don’t chop up the meat, they don’t put in any mayonnaise or anything else on it. It’s just the lobster, the roll,’ a customer named Diane told WGME.

Not only do they serve one of the highest rated lobster rolls, Red’s Eats boasts an extensive menu of fresh seafood, grilled good and desserts. 

‘I’ve been waiting for clams all winter because there’s no other place in Maine that has them that taste like this,’ said a customer named Jerry.

The family-owned business is currently run by Debbie Gagnon, daughter of the previous owner and man who brought the iconic lobster rolls to the menu Al Gagnon.

However, Paul Merrill, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Transportation, insists the shack is not the cause of traffic.

‘Red’s is a popular restaurant that draws a lot of customers — but not the reason for traffic back-ups on Route 1,’ Merrill said.
