NTSB: Broken rail caused Raymond train derailment in March
RAYMOND, Minn. — Federal investigators say a broken rail caused several train cars to derail and catch fire in western Minnesota earlier this year.
On the morning of March 30, approximately 23 cars containing ethanol, which highly flammable, and corn syrup went off the tracks. Four of the cars caught fire and the town was evacuated before authorities authorized residents’ return later that afternoon.
The National Transportation Safety Board says post-accident inspectors and evidence indicate that “track-train dynamics worsened a rail head surface condition until a complete sectional break out of the rail head occurred.”
From 2018 through 2022, there were 60 train derailments in Minnesota
Tank car inspections were completed in the days following the derailment and found that hazardous material releases occurred from five breached tank cars. Two of the cars released ethanol, which ignited and destroyed the gaskets on three additional cars, causing the further release of hazardous materials, even though the gaskets were rated to withstand temperatures up to 225 degrees Fahrenheit.
The NTSB says safety issues related to the tank car design and vulnerability issues identified in the investigation are being addressed and that no additional recommendations are warranted.
Investigators estimated that the derailment caused $1.9 million of damage to railroad equipment and the tracks.
The investigation is now officially closed.

Josefin Bouveng’s hat trick leads Gophers to sweep of Minnesota State
Josefin Bouveng posted a hat trick and the third-ranked Gophers women’s hockey team scored the first four goals of the contest on its way to a 5-2 win over Minnesota State Saturday afternoon in Mankato, Minn., completing the series sweep.
It didn’t take long for Bouveng and the Gophers (19-5-1) to strike Saturday afternoon. For the second consecutive day, it was Bouveng who found the back of the net first, scoring a power-play goal 1 minute, 47 seconds into the game.
Allie Franco scored with 2 minutes, 52 seconds remaining in the first period to make it a two-goal advantage for the U. Abbey Murphy scored 3 minutes, 18 seconds into the second period on a goal Bouveng assisted on, then Bouveng made it a 4-0 Gophers lead with a goal midway through the period. That all but sealed the series sweep for Minnesota.
But the Mavericks (10-13-1) found some life later in the period, getting a power-play goal from Alexis Paddington with 1 minute, 27 seconds remaining in the second period. JuliAnna Gazdik scored unassisted 10 minutes, 23 seconds into the third period to give Minnesota State one last longshot at tying it up over the final 10 minutes of the contest.
But Bouveng scored an empty-netter, and completed a hat trick, with 27 seconds remaining. The hat trick was the second of her career and first since Oct. 15, 2022, which also came against the Mavericks. Her first career goal came that day.
Hailey Hansen made 17 saves on 21 shots for Minnesota State. Hannah Clark stopped 19 of 21 for the Gophers.
Murphy’s goal was the 90th of her career, which makes her 10th all-time in program history in goals scored.
The Gophers return to action Friday when they host Bemidji State for a noon puck drop at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis.

Minnesota Frost beaten by Montreal Victoire to a 4-2
The Minnesota Frost suffered their first road regulation loss of the season Friday night at the hands of the Montreal Victoire with a final score of 4-2.
Victoire forward Abby Boreen scored twice in Friday’s matchup.
Claire Dalton and captain Marie-Philip Poulin, on a five-on-three power play, also scored for Montreal, playing its first home game since Dec. 30.
Montreal’s Ann-Renée Desbiens made 21 saves.
Kendall Coyne Schofield and Claire Thompson scored for the Frost. Minnesota had won its first three games away from home, before dropping a 3-2 shootout decision on Wednesday to the New York Sirens.
Nicole Hensley stopped 20 shots for the Frost.
The win moved Montreal one point back of Minnesota for first in the PWHL standings, with the Victoire holding two games in hand. The Frost beat the Victoire 4-2 on Sunday in Denver as part of the PWHL’s Takeover Tour.
The Victoire were without forward Laura Stacey, who is listed as day-to-day after suffering an injury last weekend.
Montreal scored two power-play goals in the same game for the first time since Nov. 30.
Minnesota leads the PWHL in total goals with 36 but could only beat Desbiens twice.
Boreen, playing top-line minutes in place of the injured Stacey, took a cross-ice pass from linemate Jennifer Gardiner to open the scoring for Montreal about eight minutes into the first period.
Poulin has recorded at least one point in all three games she has played against Minnesota this season. The Victoire captain has scored three goals and collected three assists in a four-game point streak against the Frost dating to last season, her longest such stretch against any opponent in her PWHL career.
The Frost host the Charge on Tuesday.
