Mothers passed COVID to babies through placenta, possibly causing brain damage, death
Two moms who gave delivery at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida, handed alongside the COVID-19 an infection to their newborns by way of the placenta, researchers on the College of Miami Well being System and the College of Miami Miller Faculty of Drugs have discovered.
In each instances, the an infection induced mind harm within the infants, in keeping with a press launch summarizing the findings from the examine, which was revealed within the journal Pediatrics on April 6.
Though each infants examined unfavorable for the COVID-19 virus at delivery, they skilled “seizures, small head sizes and developmental delays,” the press launch mentioned.
COVID-19 VACCINE DOES NOT DAMAGE PLACENTA IN PREGNANCY, STUDY FINDS
One of many infants died all of the sudden at 13 months outdated.
Exams discovered that the infants had “considerably elevated SARS-CoV-2 antibodies” of their blood, which suggests both the antibodies crossed the placenta or the infants contracted the virus and produced their very own antibodies.
The press launch indicated that each pregnant girls examined constructive for COVID throughout their second trimesters, then recovered and examined unfavorable.
But one of many girls contracted the virus once more through the third trimester.
That is the primary examine to point out the transmission of COVID by way of the placenta leading to mind harm in infants, the press launch mentioned.
Outcome not frequent amongst COVID pregnancies
Dr. Merline Benny, assistant professor of pediatrics and a neonatologist on the College of Miami, was the primary writer on the paper. She advised Fox Information Digital that she was shocked by the findings.
This was the primary examine to detect COVID crossing the placenta right into a child’s mind.
“The presence of the virus within the mind/organ of an toddler had by no means been proven earlier than,” she mentioned. “The infants reported had been two excessive instances we noticed within the NICU [neonatal intensive care unit].”
COVID VACCINES ARE NOT NEEDED FOR HEALTHY KIDS AND TEENS, SAYS WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION
The hospital has had greater than 350 infants born to COVID-positive moms, and the overwhelming majority of them had been positive, Dr. Benny famous. Solely a handful of the infants had any signs.
Dr. Ken Perry, an emergency doctor in Charleston, South Carolina, was not concerned within the examine however reviewed the findings. He mentioned essentially the most shocking outcome was the truth that the result has been proven solely in two sufferers.
“I don’t consider this can be a frequent discovering that’s occurring,” he advised Fox Information Digital.
“The findings of microcephaly [small head size], in addition to low Apgar scores [a scoring system used to determine a newborn’s color and breathing] aren’t frequent. If that they had grow to be extra frequent throughout COVID, this info would undoubtedly have been shared throughout pediatric hospitals.”
He added, “This can be a very regarding set of signs, particularly if it may be instantly related with COVID.”
RECORD-BREAKING TWINS BORN FOUR MONTHS EARLY DEFY ODDS: ‘GOD WAS IN CONTROL’
Earlier within the pandemic, the researchers noticed different, much less extreme points — similar to short-term lung illness and hypertension — in infants born to COVID-positive moms.
In these instances, it wasn’t clear whether or not the issues stemmed from irritation or from COVID crossing the placenta.
Researchers discovered ‘main mind modifications’
Along with indicators of the virus and “extreme inflammatory modifications” within the two placentas, the researchers discovered “main modifications” within the mind of the infant who handed away.
“I used to be struck by the unexplained severity of the lack of the white matter and the presence of options of hypoxia/ischemia within the cerebral cortex,” mentioned Dr. Ali G. Saad, a Miller Faculty professor, neuropathologist and director of the pediatric and perinatal pathology service at Holtz Kids’s Hospital, within the press launch discussing the findings.
“We turned suspicious that the virus, one way or the other, managed to breach the placental barrier to wreck the central nervous system, however this had not been documented earlier than,” he added.
Mother and father must be conscious however not panic
Dr. Benny reiterated that these two instances of mind harm had been extremely uncommon.
“The overwhelming majority of infants had been asymptomatic, so we do not need mother and father to panic,” she mentioned. “This examine was focused at elevating consciousness amongst obstetricians, neonatologists and neurologists. Nonetheless, it is very important conduct additional analysis to check the long-term outcomes in these infants.”
“We do not need mother and father to panic.”
If a mom is contaminated with COVID throughout being pregnant, Dr. Benny recommends monitoring for any developmental delays within the infants.
COVID VACCINE NASAL SPRAY SHOWS STRONG IMMUNE RESPONSE IN STUDY: ‘COULD BE A GAME CHANGER’
“If there are any developmental delays famous, they need to report it to their pediatrician for additional neurological and neurodevelopmental monitoring,” she mentioned.
“The usual apply in our NICU is to display all infants born to moms who check constructive with a respiratory swab for PCR [COVID test] beginning at 24 hours of life.”
The largest takeaway for pregnant girls, Dr. Perry mentioned, is to not grow to be too nervous about these outcomes.
“Being pregnant is aggravating sufficient with out including one other degree of stress for pregnant moms,” he mentioned.
Small examine calls causation into query
Given that there have been solely two infants concerned within the examine, Dr. Perry doesn’t assume it’s vital for sufferers to alter their habits as of now.
“With these few sufferers, we’re solely capable of talk about affiliation moderately than causation,” he mentioned.
“There are some similarities between these sufferers that would account for these outcomes moderately than COVID.”
He additionally mentioned, “It will be important for medical professionals to appropriately consider and combine this information moderately than change the conventional normal of care. One of the best factor to do whereas pregnant is to make sure that moms are getting acceptable prenatal care.”
For instance, the examine hypothesizes that the problems stemmed from inflammatory modifications within the placenta.
“One of the best ways to watch this in utero is to have acceptable ultrasounds performed to watch the well being of the placenta,” Dr. Perry mentioned.
Researchers plan to research additional
“Presently, we don’t have a lot info on maternal COVID throughout being pregnant and its long-term results on the toddler into childhood and adolescence,” Dr. Benny advised Fox Information Digital.
“Conducting such research into the long-term results of COVID can be essential.”
Dr. Perry mentioned this analysis must be adopted by extra research that embody many extra sufferers, permitting for higher management of impartial variables.
“This can enable for a dialogue of causation to truly happen, which can information suggestions going ahead.”

The researchers plan to search for the precise “biomarkers” that point out infants who’re at the next threat of getting hostile results from maternal COVID.
Researchers advocate that pregnant girls get the COVID vaccine.
To forestall any points from occurring, the examine authors advocate that each one girls get vaccinated in opposition to COVID-19 earlier than or throughout being pregnant and that they apply “normal COVID precautions.”
Breastfeeding can also be really useful as a method of boosting infants’ immunity, as COVID-19 antibodies have been present in breast milk.
In the end, Dr. Perry mentioned the most suitable choice is for a affected person to have a dialog together with her physician.
“Speaking with a doctor who is aware of you is one of the best ways to make use of the information inside the examine,” he mentioned.

FDA bans red food dye due to potential cancer risk
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has officially banned red dye — called Red 3, or Erythrosine — from foods, dietary supplements and ingested medicines, as reported by the Associated Press on Wednesday.
Food manufacturers must remove the dye from their products by January 2027, while drug manufacturers will have until January 2028 to do so, AP stated.
Any foods imported into the U.S. from other countries will also be subject to the new regulation.
RED FOOD DYE COULD SOON BE BANNED AS FDA REVIEWS PETITION
“The FDA is taking action that will remove the authorization for the use of FD&C Red No. 3 in food and ingested drugs,” said Jim Jones, the FDA’s deputy commissioner for human foods, in a statement.
“Evidence shows cancer in laboratory male rats exposed to high levels of FD&C Red No.3,” he continued. “Importantly, the way that FD&C Red No. 3 causes cancer in male rats does not occur in humans.”
The synthetic dye, which is made from petroleum, is used as a color additive in food and ingested drugs to give them a “bright cherry-red color,” according to an online statement from the FDA.
The petition to ban the dye cited the Delaney Clause, which states that the agency cannot classify a color additive as safe if it has been found to induce cancer in humans or animals.
The dye was removed from cosmetics nearly 35 years ago due to potential cancer risk.

“This is a welcome, but long overdue, action from the FDA: removing the unsustainable double standard in which Red 3 was banned from lipstick but permitted in candy,” said Dr. Peter Lurie, director of the group Center for Science in the Public Interest, which led the petition effort, as reported by AP.
Dr. Marc Siegel, clinical professor of medicine at NYU Langone Health and Fox News senior medical analyst, applauded the FDA’s ban.
“It was a long time coming,” he told Fox News Digital. “It’s been more than 30 years since it was banned from cosmetics in the U.S. due to evidence that it is carcinogenic in high doses in lab rats. There needs to be a consistency between what we put on our skin and what we put into our mouths.”
“There needs to be a consistency between what we put on our skin and what we put into our mouths.”
Siegel said he believes the FDA’s decision could be tied to the incoming new head of the Department of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
“They knew it would have happened anyway under RFK Jr.,” he said. “It is already banned or severely restricted in Australia, Japan and the European Union.”
The food additive also “drew kids in” to a diet of empty calories and ultraprocessed foods, Siegel added.
“It has also been linked to behavioral issues in children, including ADHD.”
Nearly 3,000 foods are shown to contain Red No. 3, according to Food Scores, a database of foods compiled by the Environmental Working Group.

The National Confectioners Association provided the below statement to Fox News Digital.
“Food safety is the number one priority for U.S. confectionery companies, and we will continue to follow and comply with FDA’s guidance and safety standards.”
The petition to remove Red No. 3 from foods, supplements and medications was presented in 2022 by the Center for Science in the Public Interest and 23 other organizations and scientists.
