Colombia tries a new solution for Pablo Escobar’s ‘cocaine hippos’

When Escobar surrendered to authorities in 1991, the federal government seized his Hacienda Nápoles property — and allowed the animals to roam free.
Within the 30 years since, the unique hippos — three females and a male — have multiplied to greater than 130. Hippos aren’t native to South America. With out pure predators, the aggressive, territorial animals have settled into the Magdalena River in central Colombia.
Now the insatiable herbivores are devouring flora, crowding out native animals, polluting soil and water, and threatening folks. (Hippos are among the many world’s most harmful animals, able to killing a human with a single chunk, answerable for an estimated 500 deaths every year.)
You’ve heard of Cocaine Bear, the 500-pound black bear in Georgia that overdosed on Colombian powder tossed from a drug smuggler’s aircraft? These are Escobar’s cocaine hippos: greater, extra quite a few, deadlier. The Atmosphere Ministry right here final 12 months labeled them an “invasive species” and banned their copy and commercialization. However the debate over whether or not to preserve or kill them goes again a long time.
To some right here, the big mammals have turn out to be quirky, roguish folks heroes. However “simply wait and see,” mentioned David Echeverri, from the regional environmental company Cornare. “As soon as they begin attacking and killing folks, it’ll all change.”
By 2040, if the invasive species is left alone, the inhabitants might attain 600.
Now authorities say they’ve an answer.
Authorities in Colombia’s Antioquia division, residence to each Medellín and Escobar’s property, plan to seize about 70 of the animals and ship them to sanctuaries in India and Mexico.
Sixty are to be flown to the Greens Zoological Rescue and Rehabilitation Middle in Gujarat, India. The remaining are to go to the Ostok Sanctuary in Mexico. Ecuador, the Philippines and Botswana are lining up for future shipments.
(Escobar was held within the personal jail constructed to his specs beneath a cope with the federal government to keep away from extradition to america. The ability, referred to as the Cathedral, reportedly included a bar, soccer subject and telescope so the drug lord might see his daughter in her Medellín residence whereas they spoke by phone. He walked out of the ability in 1992 and was shot to loss of life by nationwide police the next 12 months.)
Planning for the hippos’ relocation started a 12 months and a half in the past, when Sara Jaramillo, an entrepreneur right here who works in animal welfare, requested the Ostok Sanctuary in Culiacán, Mexico, residence to round 400 animals, together with deer and jaguars, whether or not it might be enthusiastic about taking a few of them in.
“We began to hunt sources and make preparations,” mentioned Ernesto Zazueta, president of the Ostok Sanctuary. “Not everyone seems to be keen to switch and hold them.”
Zazueta mentioned his group is getting ready a facility to carry the ten hippos out of public view. They gained’t be let free, he mentioned: “In any other case what occurred in Colombia would occur in Mexico.”
Efficient methods to deal with the hippo drawback have proved elusive. In 2009, the federal government greenlit a “managed hunt” of a few animals. Federico Pfeil-Schneider, an skilled hunter escorted by the army, killed one.
Then the photograph of its carcass surrounded by proud troopers sparked outrage. Followers named it Pepe; some grieved the loss.
At that time, the inhabitants was lower than three dozen. However politicians dallied, and the numbers ballooned.
A decade in the past, Echeverri launched a sterilization program. Thus far, 13 hippos have been sterilized and 5 have been relocated to native zoos.
“Can we contemplate these figures a hit?” he mused. “Effectively, capturing and castrating them is so advanced, so harmful and takes so lengthy that the reply ought to be sure. But it surely’s not an efficient measure.”
Feminine hippos can delivery one calf each two years. The inhabitants is reproducing sooner than people have been sterilized.
Previously two years, Cornare has added one other strategy: the chemical contraceptive GonaCon, offered by the U.S. authorities. It’s utilized by dart rifle on men and women alike.
Final 12 months, they administered it to 38 hippos — however they haven’t any concepts which of them.
“Monitoring them down is a titanic activity,” Echeverri mentioned. Cornare has tried marking them with paint, satellite tv for pc markers and collars, however the hippos, by some means, have been capable of take away all of them. This 12 months, the company plans to load the darts with tattoo ink.
Sending the hippos overseas can be costly. Zazueta, of the Mexican sanctuary, additionally acted as a liaison between Colombia and the Indian sanctuary. He mentioned authorities will constitution cargo planes, able to carrying 20 to 30 hippos, from the Belarusian firm Rada Airways. A flight to Mexico might price $400,000; to India, will probably be $900,000.
Every hippo is to be contained in a particular picket crate that would price as much as $10,000. Sustaining a person prices roughly $2,500 monthly.
“The sources for all of this come from Mexico and India,” Zazueta mentioned. He mentioned they’re involved concerning the animals’ well-being; that they’re the progeny of Escobar’s pets is nothing to brag about.
An Argentine documentary producer can be filming the entire course of.
Lina de los Ríos, a spokeswoman for the regional authorities, mentioned this can be a “priceless technique to protect these animals, as we don’t imagine their extermination is the suitable resolution.”

The Washington Commanders will build a new stadium in Washington, D.C., returning the team to its namesake city, sources familiar with the plan tell News4.
The plan to be announced Monday between District and team leadership will see the construction of a state-of-the-art arena on the former RFK stadium site along the banks of the Anacostia River.
Details of the deal are expected to be outlined by Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Commanders’ owners at a news conference Monday morning.
Who’s paying for the new Commanders stadium, and how much will it cost?
News4 reported on the impending deal earlier this month. Documents obtained by News4 showed that the Commanders would put up as much as $2.5 billion, and the District would provide up to $850 million.
D.C.’s funding would go toward what are referred to as eligible capital costs associated with the stadium and infrastructure for the stadium and surrounding 180-acre campus, including parking structures that will serve the entire development.
The District’s investment would be paid in installments, with the first $500 million paid out between 2026 and 2030 for various portions of the work, as the stadium and infrastructure are completed. The deal calls for the stadium and parking to be completed by fall 2030. Commanders owner Josh Harris has been clear he wants a new stadium to be ready for the 2030 season.
Long before the move to Maryland, the team played at the now-demolished Griffith Stadium in Northwest D.C. It then called RFK Stadium home from 1961 to 1996. Harris and several co-owners grew up as Washington football fans during that era, which included three Super Bowl championships from 1982 to 1991.
The Commanders’ lease at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland, runs through 2027.
The Commanders were looking for a new stadium for years, considering locations in D.C., Virginia and Maryland.
A potential return to D.C. has included efforts by Harris and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to lobby lawmakers to pass legislation transferring the land from the federal government to D.C. It made it through Congress at the eleventh hour, and former President Joe Biden signed it in early January.
News4 will have live coverage of the announcement Monday.

WATCH: Highlights from Commanders second-round pick CB Trey Amos

The Washington Commanders entered the 2025 NFL Draft with fewer picks than originally anticipated after spending a couple in trades this offseason. However, they have utilized their first two draft picks well as they look to contend for the Super Bowl this upcoming season.
In the first round, the Commanders got quarterback Jayden Daniels some help along the offensive line by drafting Josh Conerly, an offensive tackle out of Oregon. And, here in the second round, Washington went to the other side of the ball, adding to their defensive back room by taking Ole Miss Rebels’ cornerback Trey Amos.
Amos figures to be a rotational player for the Commanders, helping supplement a room that has Marshaon Lattimore, Mike Sainristil, Noah Igbinoghene, and Jonathan Jones. He is pro-ready with his coverage ability and possesses great size and quickness to play well in press coverage. Twitchy and long, Amos was one of the best defenders on passes over 20 yards throughout his career.
While there is plenty to like about Amos, he will need to become more consistent at playing the ball instead of the receiver’s hands and get better at tackling in open space, as he tends to arm tackle. Check out the Washington Commanders’ newest draft pick, Trey Amos’ highlights below.
