3 things from a Dallas Mavericks demolition of the Utah Jazz, 102-77
The Dallas Mavericks crushed the Utah Jazz 102-77 Monday evening in Dallas. The 25 level margin doesn’t do justice to how badly Dallas defeated Utah. The Recreation 5 win places the Mavericks up within the sequence 3-2. Dallas can shut the the sequence out Thursday in Utah.
The Mavericks had been aggressive early, and their protection stifled the Jazz for a lot of the primary half. Regardless of Dallas enjoying small, they dominated the inside within the first half. They lived on the rim, going 10-of-12 within the restricted space. Additionally they outscored the Jazz 30-22 on second likelihood level. This helped them climate early turnover points and go into the half 52-36. That was the bottom scoring half of the season for the Jazz, and the fewest factors allowed by the Mavericks within the first half of a playoff recreation since 2011, towards the Oklahoma Metropolis Thunder.
Dallas blew the sport open extensive within the third quarter. Luka Doncic scored 19 factors as he dissected the Jazz, and the Mavericks by no means seemed again. They led the sport wire to wire, and received their starters some a lot wanted relaxation.
Doncic led all scorers with 33 factors and 13 rebounds. Jalen Brunson added 24 factors. Jordan Clarkson led the Jazz with 20 factors off the bench.
Listed here are three issues from the sport:
The Jazz had been in a position to shoot 3-pointers, however couldn’t make them
One of many objectives of the Mavericks this sequence was limiting the variety of 3-pointers the Jazz tried. They as an alternative needed to chase Utah off the 3-point line and into midrange floaters or robust photographs on the rim. And thru 4 video games it labored. The Jazz had been second within the league in photographs from deep throughout the common season, hoisting 40 per recreation. However the Mavericks shut that off by 4 video games, permitting the Jazz to solely take 28 3-pointers per recreation.
In Recreation 5, the Jazz had been in a position to create some seems from behind the arc. They simply couldn’t hit them. Utah shot 3-for-30 on 3-pointers, probably the most makes an attempt they’ve had within the sequence however nonetheless only a paltry 10%. That’s considerably decrease than their already poor capturing from deep to date this postseason. The Jazz had been solely hitting 32% of their 3-pointers coming into this recreation, down a bit from their 36% 3-point capturing on the season. In Recreation 6 the Mavericks should shut down the 3-point makes an attempt once more, but when they wrestle to take action, it’s good to know the Jazz aren’t lighting it up from downtown proper now.
Luka Doncic and the Mavericks found out the offense
In Recreation 4 it was apparent that Doncic’s return by a wrench into the Dallas offensive machine that had gained two video games in a row. That’s often the case each time a excessive utilization participant like Doncic misses time after which returns. Everybody will get used to a extra concerned position for a couple of video games, then has to return to their extra restricted positions as soon as issues return to regular. We noticed that within the first half of Recreation 4, however the Mavericks began to determine issues out within the second half. They simply couldn’t get issues lined up in time to tug out the win.
That wasn’t the case in Recreation 5. The Mavericks stumbled a bit at first, battling turnovers. However as soon as they cleaned up their possessions they discovered a rhythm and began placing some room between themselves and the Jazz. By the third quarter, everybody was locked in and operating the offense completely. Have a look at Doncic waltz his option to the basket right here:
That’s an ideal execution of the pick-and-roll by Doncic and Dwight Powell together with a again choose by Reggie Bullock to unencumber the paint utterly. The Mavericks executed cleanly from the second quarter on. Extra importantly, Doncic and Jalen Brunson found out a give and take whereas operating the offense. They struggled to discover a rhythm with one another in Recreation 4. Tonight, they seemed extra like they did within the common season, and that’s unhealthy information for Utah.
Within the play above, Brunson’s motion and shot-making potential make Royce O’Neal hesitate simply sufficient that he’s late to assist in the lane. It’s an instance of how Brunson’s efficiency within the sequence prevents Utah from absolutely specializing in Doncic each journey down. The Jazz don’t have the perimeter defensive gamers to cease the Mavericks’ two playmakers at guard, and are unlikely to discover a resolution by Recreation 6.
The Mavericks stayed small and nonetheless outrebounded the Jazz
By necessity the Mavericks should play small, as they don’t have a conventional massive on the roster beside Boban Marjanovic. They go along with a rotation of Powell and Maxi Kleber, and for brief stretches even performed Dorian Finney-Smith and Davis Bertans at middle. Earlier within the sequence this allowed the Jazz to dominate the glass and get loads of second likelihood factors.
Not tonight. The Mavericks outrebounded the Jazz 49-40 and outscored them 14-8 on second likelihood factors. They grabbed extra offensive rebounds than Utah, 11-7. Doncic outrebounded Gobert 13 to 11. It was a gritty, robust efficiency by a Mavericks group that’s exhibiting increasingly more that they’ll win rock battle video games.

Trey Lance will get “significant” snaps for the Cowboys during Sunday’s season finale
The Dallas Cowboys have a single game left on their 2024 season and it will feature the third quarterback to play significant snaps for them this season. That is the verbiage being used as it relates to Trey Lance, according to Friday’s report from NFL media.
From 2022 through 17 weeks of 2024, Trey Lance has thrown a grand total of 20 passes. He may eclipse that total on Sunday. Big opportunity for him on Sunday. https://t.co/6DcgzTv0Ak
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) January 4, 2025
Sunday’s game will be the third that Dallas will play after being mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. Aside from the first where it was the case against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, we have seen the Cowboys dial back the intensity ever since they were formally eliminated from consideration for the playoffs. It is worth noting the elimination came just a few hours before that Tampa game which is why they (in all likelihood) went at that game the way they did.
With time for the situation to take though we saw the Cowboys shut CeeDee Lamb down for the season last week, the most glaring indication that they were waving the white flag on 2024. Ever since this season took a turn at the quarterback position specifically, we have seen the Cowboys insist on competing to win and to their credit they have managed to do that in impressive manner with Cooper Rush under center.
Obviously circumstances have changed though which is why the Cowboys feel comfortable going with Trey Lance at quarterback to whatever degree the word “significant” ultimately yields. While this will mark the third quarterback to play a large role for Dallas this season as noted, it marks the first of this variety for Lance in a Cowboys uniform. What’s more is it marks his first legitimate action period since his last start which he made for the San Francisco 49ers way back in Week 2 of the 2022 season. He went 2 for 3 for 30 yards (with 3 rushes for 13 yards) before being injured and lost for that year.
It was almost a full 365 days later when the Cowboys traded for Lance and it took until November 10th of the 2024 season for him to throw a pass in a regular season game for the team in some mop up duty against the Philadelphia Eagles. We have noted this several times over, it was a horrific trade for Dallas having sent a fourth-round pick for Lance’s services.
Importantly, Lance is a free agent after this season so the idea that the Cowboys could have been getting a look at him for the future wasn’t exactly a genuine one. Still though, it will be interesting to see how he looks in a game that isn’t in the preseason.
For what it’s worth, the Cowboys are hosting Washington in the season finale for the first time in nine years. During that 2015 season finale the Cowboys also started a quarterback down the roster in a meaningless game and he had quite the day. The quarterback in question was Kellen Moore who threw for 435 yards. At the time it was the sixth-most passing yards in a game for a Dallas Cowboys quarterback.
Additionally, consider that the Cowboys are making this decision despite a potential incentive that Cooper Rush could reach based on playing time.
Cowboys QB Cooper Rush gets $500,000 in incentives if he plays 55% of the team’s snaps this season.
Going into Sunday he’s played 52.5%. Depending on snaps, he’ll need to play most or all of the game to reach that incentive, otherwise he’ll only earn $250k for reaching 45% mark
— Jonathan Jones (@jjones9) January 2, 2025
The word “significant” is obviously vague as it relates to Lance, but Ian Rapoport noted that he could wind up throwing more than 20 passes. It stands to reason that this would inhibit Rush from reaching that incentive.
If Lance were under contract for the future then this move could be more justified from the Cowboys. While many have argued to see him, it isn’t talking out of both sides of the proverbial mouth to say that this isn’t necessarily the best way to go about it. Rush has been an incredible soldier for several years now and the Cowboys may be purposefully making a decision that is going to cost him money all in a meaningless game, and all in a likely vain effort.

Disney Needs To Give Bryce Dallas Howard A ‘Star Wars’ Movie Already
Disney has struggled mightily to get any new Star Wars movie projects off the ground with loads cancelled and others in unclear stages of development. The only “definitely happening” one is The Mandalorian and Grogu, which of course came from the Disney Plus TV series.
But if there is one fixture in the Star Wars universe behind the scenes that should be given their own movie, it’s none other than Bryce Dallas Howard, the actress-director daughter of actor-director Ron Howard who has consistently put out amazing episodes of Star Wars series that she’s been given to direct.
That was on full display this week with Skeleton Crew’s Zero Friends Again, where the plot did not move forward much but Howard did brilliant work with the story available and it’s easily one of the best episodes of the already-good series.
- She did the fourth episode of The Mandalorian, Sanctuary, where Mando has to defend a village from raiders in an AT-ST, a thrilling entry.
- In season 3 of The Mandalorian, she directed Guns for Hire, which focused on Bo-Katan challenging Mandalorian privateers for leadership over the group, uniting the groups to try to go and retake Mandalore.
- She did episode five of The Book of Boba Fett, one of the only good episodes because it moved away from Boba Fett entirely and brought Mando back for a full episode in between his seasons. It’s the episode where he gets beskar armor for Grogu and makes a new ship out of an N-1 Starfighter.
She didn’t do any episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ahsoka, Andor or The Acolyte, but the general consensus among fans is that when Bryce Dallas Howard shows up, it’s going to be a banger.
It seems like a far better idea to give Howard her own Star Wars movie, whatever it might be, rather than bringing in more outside directors like James Mangold or Simon Kinberg, both being ported over from X-Men, of all places. Howard knows Star Wars, and deserves a shot at the big time. If not a movie, give her a series all to herself. Maybe she could make something set in the Old or High Republic work for once.
Will this happen? Who knows. She may just keep directing periodic TV episodes, but the only Star Wars show that is even returning is Ahsoka, plus Andor wrapping with season 2, which is already done filming. Skeleton Crew seemed like it may have been on deck to become an ongoing series, but budget versus viewership is a real concern.
Disney may be risk-averse when it comes to Star Wars these days, hence why the only thing it’s making is a Mandalorian movie, but Howard does not seem like a risk, and she’s earned a bigger project.
