Yankees held to one hit in Atlanta, lose fourth straight and drop to .500

ATLANTA – The Yankees privately braced for the worst, and maybe even expected it.

And not without cause.

Sending a badly struggling Luis Severino to the mound Tuesday against one of the more potent, diverse lineups the sport has seen in years did not portend a successful night for either party.

It was not.

Though it certainly could have gone far worse, it still didn’t go nearly well enough as Severino allowed two home runs and the Yankees were held to one hit in a 5-0 loss to Atlanta in front of a sellout crowd of 40,454 at Truist Park.

The loss dropped the Yankees (60-60), still securely in last place in the American League East, back to .500 for the first time since May 1 when they were 15-15.

The Yankees, who fell to 2-6 on this three-city trip that began with series losses to the White Sox and Marlins, ended up with more errors (2) than hits (1). Atlanta, which upped its run total to an MLB-best 700, improved to 77-42 as it continues to run away with the NL East.

The Yankees, who have lost four straight, dropped to 6 1/2 games back of the last AL wild-card spot.

Severino (2-8, 7.98 ERA), who entered 1-6 with an 11.71 ERA in his last seven outings, started Tuesday’s game in the first inning after following an opener in Chicago in his last start (it didn’t go well that night either).

On Tuesday Severino allowed five runs (three earned) and five hits over four innings. Marcell Ozuna hit a three-run homer in the first inning and, after an error by Isiah Kiner-Falefa to start the fourth, Ronald Acuna Jr. blasted a two-run shot later in the inning to make it 5-0.

Atlanta righthander Bryce Elder (9-4, 3.46), who entered with a 5.37 ERA since the beginning of June, rediscovered his groove, the case for so many opposing pitchers this season against the Yankees.

The 24-year-old allowed one hit over seven innings, walking three and striking out three in a 94-pitch outing. The Yankees grounded into four double plays, two by Gleyber Torres and one by Aaron Judge in the ninth to end it.

Atlanta, which entered the day having scored an MLB-best 117 first-inning runs, improved on that total.

Acuna Jr. led off the bottom of the first by lining a 2-and-2 changeup to center for a single. With Michael Harris II at the plate, Severino threw wildly to first on a pick-off attempt, the ball bouncing well into foul ground, the error allowing Acuna to take third.

But Severino it looked as if he might keep the inning from spiraling. Harris II popped to short and Austin Riley struck out swinging at a 99-mph fastball. But Ozuna pounced on a first-pitch slider and hammered it to dead center, his 24th homer making it 3-0.

The 34-pitch inning could have ended up far worse.

Severino walked Eddie Rosario then hit Sean Murphy with a 1-and-0 changeup before Orlando Arcia flied to right to end the inning.

The Yankees put two on in the second with one out but Harrison Bader, hitting .319 (23-for-72) his previous 21 games, grounded into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.

Severino struck out Nicky Lopez with a 99-mph fastball to start a 1-2-3 second and struck out Riley and Matt Olson, both with cutters, to start the third. After Ozuna singled, Severino fanned Eddie Rosario swinging at a 99-mph fastball to end the inning.

Severino could not continue that momentum in the fourth.

Murphy started the inning with a chopper to third that Kiner-Falefa, who won a Gold Glove at the position in 2020 with the Rangers, booted for an error. Orlando Arcia and Lopez grounded out, but Acuna Jr. blasted a 1-and-1, 98-mph fastball to center, his 27th homer providing a five-run cushion that was more than enough.

Braves News: Austin Riley progressing, Atlanta secures series win, and more

The Atlanta Braves received another positive update from third baseman Austin Riley, who exited Sunday’s game with soreness on his side. An MRI revealed that there was just some inflammation and that a move to the injured list would not be necessary.

David O’Brien of The Athletic reported that Riley told manager Brian Snitker that he was feeling much better on Tuesday.

Austin Riley felt “much better” today and was even having trouble finding the spot that’s sore in his side, Snitker said. Still day-to-day, but sounds like IL definitely not needed, barring any setbacks.

After this news, it is still likely that Riley will return to the lineup this week.

Report: Steelers' opponent, location revealed for season opener

As he settles in as Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator, Arthur Smith will reportedly head into familiar territory right away. According to WSB-TV’s Zach Klein, the Steelers will head to Atlanta to take on the Falcons in the season opener.

Smith spent the last three years as the Falcons’ head coach, amassing a 21-30 record before his firing after the 2023 season. He then latched on with the Steelers, where he’ll now work with a quarterback room of Russell Wilson and Justin Fields after some major moves this offseason.

According to Klein, Smith won’t have to wait long to return to Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Smith spoke about his tenure in Atlanta after taking over in Pittsburgh earlier this offseason, pointing out the need to build the roster from scratch during his time at the helm.

“It was a unique situation, essentially rebuilding a team” Smith said, via Falcon Report’s Daniel Flick. “There were some good lessons learned. It was a tough lesson, but it’ll help me here, especially with some of the young players here that we have, and how you fit the offense and try to play to those guys’ strengths.”

Pittsburgh and Atlanta both made major moves at the quarterback position this offseason. Wilson is coming in as the expected starter for the Steelers this year with Fields as his backup while the Falcons signed Kirk Cousins to a lucrative contract and selected Michael Penix Jr. with the No. 8 overall pick in the NFL Draft. Raheem Morris is now at the helm for Atlanta, as well.

Chiefs, Ravens to kick off 2024 NFL season

The full NFL schedule is set to be revealed Wednesday night at 8 p.m. ET, but some games have already been announced. That includes the first game of the year, which will see the two-time defending champions in a rematch of the 2023 AFC Championship.

The Super Bowl LVIII-winning Kansas City Chiefs will take on the Baltimore Ravens in a highly anticipated matchup to start the year. The 2024 NFL season begins on Thursday, Sept. 5, at 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC.

Baltimore 1-3 against the Chiefs with quarterbacks Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes under center. Last time the Chiefs and Ravens were face-to-face, Kansas City won 17-10 and advanced to the championship game against the San Francisco 49ers.
