Atlanta Hawks Suffer Embarrassing Loss to Los Angeles Lakers

The Atlanta Hawks are a workforce in freefall. An 18-21 report and tenth-seed within the Japanese Convention one way or the other paints a rosier image than what is definitely transpiring. Two losses to the lowly Los Angeles Lakers (with out Anthony Davis) inside one week highlighted all that’s going fallacious for Atlanta.

On the heels of a classic 47-point efficiency by LeBron James, Atlanta entered its west coast rematch in physique solely. By halftime of final evening’s recreation, Los Angeles had primarily put the sport away with a 70-49 lead on the break.

It’s typically unwise to make sweeping declarations from a small pattern measurement, however Atlanta’s two losses to Los Angeles in a single week show adjustments have to be made to the teaching employees, roster, and entrance workplace.

Teaching

It’s only the primary week of January, and Hawks head coach Nate McMillan is preventing for his job. Look no additional than the old-school coach’s shallow rotations. Certain, McMillan is infamous for using his starters.

However since December 1, solely the Denver Nuggets have had a four-person lineup log extra minutes than Atlanta’s beginning 5, minus Clint Capela. That’s a formidable feat contemplating De’Andre Hunter has seven video games throughout that point.

Everybody can nitpick rotation selections. Nevertheless, final evening’s catastrophe class in protection is the most recent reminder that Atlanta is getting out schemed on a nightly foundation. Generally groups get sizzling, just like the league’s worst outdoors capturing workforce did final evening towards Atlanta. Different occasions, they reap the benefits of what’s given to them.

Roster

In final evening’s recreation, Atlanta shot 45.8% from the sector and 29% from the three-point line. The putrid offensive numbers underscore the truth that Atlanta has probably the most unhealthy shot weight loss program within the NBA. In an obvious rebuke of analytics, Atlanta is constantly close to the highest of the league in midrange photographs and scraping the ground in three-pointers and free throws.

However it’s arduous to stretch the ground when few shooters are on the roster. Bogdan Bogdanovic and AJ Griffin are the one above-average shooters within the rotation, and they’re each net-negative defenders.

When Clint Capela is out, which he has been for ten of the final 12 video games, it has a compound impact of injuring Atlanta’s beginning unit and bench. Atlanta’s depth and roster building are poor. Nothing wanting an overhaul will propel this workforce into the postseason this spring.

Entrance Workplace

Over the previous weeks, Atlanta has misplaced its workforce president, senior adviser, director of professional scouting, and vp of participant personnel. You learn that appropriately; Atlanta doesn’t have a director of professional scouting in the midst of an NBA season.

Maybe a scout might have helped craft a recreation plan for the ascendant play of Los Angeles’ journeymen Dennis Schroder and Thomas Bryant. Or possibly develop a scheme to include James, who was with out a number of key teammates final evening.

There isn’t a level in trying to fill these entrance workplace positions in January. The wheels have come off, and each degree of the group is rudderless. New entrance workplace hirings and a full teaching search should wait till the offseason. Nevertheless, a sequence of trades are required to limp into the Japanese Convention Play-In Event.

Prediction and betting odds for Jan. 28, Houston Rockets at Atlanta Hawks

In a makeup of a postponement from earlier this month, Jalen Green and the Rockets (-6.5) are in Atlanta to face an injury ravaged Hawks team. For both teams, it’s night two of a split back-to-back.

Seventeen days later than originally planned, the Houston Rockets will make their lone visit of the 2024-25 NBA season to Atlanta on Tuesday night.

The original Jan. 11 date was postponed due to winter weather in the Atlanta area. Since the Rockets and Hawks are in different conferences, they play only twice per season (once in each city).

Because this game was a late addition to the schedule, both teams will be navigating back-to-back considerations — and with travel in-between. Atlanta played at Minnesota on Monday night, while Houston was at Boston.

Due in large part to widespread injuries throughout their roster, the Hawks (22-24) have lost five straight games while falling to No. 9 in the Eastern Conference standings. The Rockets (31-14) remain No. 2 in the West after Monday’s thrilling road victory over the Celtics.

Projected Lineups, Broadcast Info

Rockets at Hawks Betting Odds:

All NBA Odds via BetMGM:

  • Point spread: Rockets -6.5
  • Money line: Rockets -225 / Hawks +185
  • Over-under: 226.5

Rockets at Hawks Injury Updates:

  • Rockets: Jabari Smith Jr., out, left metacarpal fracture
  • Rockets: Tari Eason, out, left lower leg injury management
  • Rockets: Cam Whitmore, questionable, illness
  • Hawks: Jalen Johnson, out, left shoulder injury
  • Hawks: Trae Young, questionable, right hamstring tightness
  • Hawks: Kobe Bufkin, out, right shoulder surgery
  • Hawks: Cody Zeller, out, not with team

After his recent return from a lengthy injury, Eason’s absence is due to the team being cautious on back-to-backs for the time being.

Prediction and Picks for Rockets at Hawks:

It’s night two of a road back-to-back for both teams, but the Hawks have significantly more injury concerns and less roster depth in general. That could lead to a good night for the road favorites.

With both teams likely fatigued and not defending with their usual energy , that could make the over a tempting bet. Athletic players who attack the rim — such as Jalen Green, who fared extremely well in Houston’s lone visit to Atlanta last season — could benefit.

Green, Alperen Sengun, and Fred VanVleet are Houston’s three leading scorers, but they combined for only 30 points a night earlier in Boston. (Amen Thompson and Dillon Brooks did the heavy lifting.) That might give Houston’s top scorers a bit more juice on night two of a road back-to-back than they would otherwise have.

Best Bet: Rockets -6.5 (-102)

Favorite Prop: Jalen Green, over 22.5 points (-120)

Prediction: 118-110, Rockets
