New Jersey nana volunteers with Red Cross to help thousands displaced in Maui:
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Not long after the devastation on Maui was first realized, organizations across the Tri-State region answered the call to help.
“I love what I do, I don’t want to be needed because that means somebody has a disaster,” Mary Sterling said.
A week ago Sterling answered the call and flew to Maui to help the thousands now displaced following the deadly wildfires.
“To hear what these people have gone through,” Sterling said. “They shared the only way they got out was just to be in shock.”
The 78-year-old Nana from New Jersey is volunteering with the Red Cross. This is her fourth deployment just this year.
While in Wailuku, she’s working 12-hour shifts at the War Memorial Gymnasium shelter.
“There’s nothing like being alone at this point and having no one to be there with you,” Sterling said. “So we’re able to take care of their physical needs but we’re also here to support them emotionally.”
“It’s humbling to be able to come from Pennsylvania and provide any support and closure,” Philadephia Fire Department Captain Ken Pagurek said.
Captain Pagurek just got to Hawaii Thursday but quickly got to work with Urban Search & Rescue Missions through FEMA. He’s one of five members plus a K9 from Pennsylvania Task Force One in Lahaina.
“We’re using K9s that are really an extremely valuable tool for us,” Pagurek said.
“The aerial pictures reminded me a lot of right around Ground Zero,” Lt. Colonel Larry Ashcraft said.
Four Salvation Army buildings are a complete loss in Lahaina.
Lt. Colonel Ashcraft notes thankfully all of their staff made it out safely and quickly returned to the frontlines to help.
“So right now the Salvation Army is feeding and coordinating over 9,000 meals a day at the Maui County Center as well as various shelters,” Ashcraft said.
The Salvation Army is asking for those who want to help to do so through monetary donations.

Here’s when New Jersey will hold a special election to fill late Rep. Donald Payne Jr.’s House seat
NEWARK, N.J. — A special election will be held in New Jersey later this year to fill the United States House of Representatives seat left vacant by late Rep. Donald Payne Jr.
New Jersey special election
Gov. Phil Murphy issued a writ of election Friday calling for a special primary election on July 16 followed by a special general election on Sept. 18.
Candidates have until May 10 to file a petition seeking a party nomination. It is unknown at this time who will be running.
The elected representative will serve out the remainder of Payne’s term through Jan. 3, 2025, in New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District, which covers parts of Essex, Hudson and Union counties.
New Jersey’s regular primary election, meanwhile, is set for June 4.
Rep. Donald Payne Jr. dies at age 65
Payne was hospitalized in early April after a “physical accident,” his office said, and died on April 24 after medical complications led to a heart attack. He was 65 years old.
Payne had served as the state’s 10th Congressional District representative since 2012. The seat had previously been held by his father, Rep. Donald Payne Sr., who died of colon cancer while in office.
A funeral for Payne Jr. was held Thursday in Newark at Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, where his father’s funeral had been held.
Payne Jr. was remembered by his children as “the best father that anybody could ever ask for” and by fellow lawmakers as a hero and a remarkable leader.

New Jersey State Fair Meadowlands is returning for 2024
With the nice weather comes time for fairs, and there is none bigger than the State Fair.
The State Fair Meadowlands will be held from June 20 through July 7, held around MetLife Stadium in the, you guessed it, Meadowlands.
Here are just a few of the scheduled attractions:
⚫ Circus Lena
⚫ Cycle Circus
⚫ Michael Jackson Tribute Show
⚫ Rosaire’s Racing Pigs
⚫ Illusionist Jay Mattioli
⚫ Jurassic Kingdom
We cannot wait to open the doors to the 2024 fair,” said Mike Dorso, Vice President of the State Fair Meadowlands. “Our exciting new acts, combined with the favorites people adore, are lining up to make this the most entertainment-packed fair yet. We’ve also added several new food offerings and vendors that people are going to love.
Some other reasons to attend include:
⚫ Spectacular Fireworks Displays on both July 3rd and July 4th. The fireworks can be seen from anywhere on the fairgrounds.
⚫ Magic of Lance Gifford will dazzle crowds with his magic acts.
⚫ Commerford Petting Zoo never fails to impress children and adults, alike. Stroll through the zoo and interact with ponies, llamas, donkeys and much more. Be sure to check out the pony rides, too, for an additional fee.
I haven’t even gotten to the unique food fare at the fair. They have the classic carnival-type food, like cheesesteaks, corn dogs, and gyros; but they also have more exotic choices like alligator meat.
Other popular items are fried Oreos and fried candy bars. All sorts of things wrapped in bacon will be available, as well.
The fair will not run on June 25 due to a soccer game at the stadium.
