MILWAUKEE — A week filled with turmoil for the Pulaski High School football team ended with a bang as the Rams defeated Milwaukee Vincent, 44-0.

The Rams had to forfeit games this season and now face a 2-year playoff ban.

MPS said this issue stems from paperwork not being filed with the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA).

The Milwaukee City Conference involves relegation. Since Pulaski won the Blackbourn Division last season, they were elevated to the Richardson Division. Bay View was relegated to Blackbourn. Paperwork needed to be done, but that didn’t happen.

Pulaski football players, parents end season on a high note despite MPS misstep

Pulaski was originally set to play Riverside on Friday. Bay View was set to take on Vincent on Thursday night.

MPS and the WIAA confirmed the game changes on Thursday, less than 24 hours before game time.

A spokesperson for MPS provided TMJ4 with this statement: “Both Bay View and Pulaski High Schools will proceed with their final football games of the season. Each team will compete in the City Conference Divisions they were assigned before this year’s division reassignment. Since the teams have reverted to their WIAA-designated home conferences, these matchups will not result in any forfeits. This decision ensures that both schools can complete their seasons without disruption.”

Pulaski High School’s Atavion Hooker got the text Thursday morning that they’d be facing Milwaukee Vincent High School at 6:00 p.m. instead of practicing. It was another twist in a week filled with adversity for the team.

“It was discouraging,” said Hooker. “A lot of players didn’t show up to practice. It brought us down, but our coaches brought us back up.”

The players left it all on the field on Thursday night as parents and fans cheered them on.

However, the damage had already been done to the team, leaving parents like Guadalupe Wise frustrated and uncertain about her son Terrell’s future.

“I wish they would’ve thought about who they would be affecting by not taking care of their end for them to continue to play,” said Wise.

She said they’re now considering transferring schools so he can try and play for another team and compete for the playoffs next year.

“He’s asked what is he going to do next year,” said Wise. “It’s his senior year, so he wants to continue to play.”

Terrell told TMJ4 it had been a difficult week but that the team worked to stay focused on finishing the season strong.

“We just tried to stay positive,” said Wise. “This is a team. This is family.”

While Demetrius Hooker was happy to watch her son, Atavion, shine on Thursday, she was still disgusted with the error by MPS.

“It’s not fair to the boys,” said Hooker. “I feel like why are they being punished? There’s no reason for them to get punished. They’re out here playing. They’re dedicated to their teams, and I just feel like the hard work is just going unnoticed.”

Despite the setback, Pulaski got the ball rolling and never looked back, beating Vincent 44-0.

Both Guadalupe and Demetrius could only watch the team and their sons with pride as the Rams rushed to victory.

“The love that they have for each other as a team,” said Guadalupe. “Their coaches are amazing. The way they care for the players, just the unity they have all in general, and I’m grateful for that.”

Both schools are planning to appeal the playoff ban.

MILWAUKEE – A Milwaukee man convicted of reckless homicide in the death of two people following a police pursuit and crash was sentenced to prison on Thursday, Oct. 17.

24-year-old Papa Diallo was sentenced to 50 years in prison, and 20 years of extended supervision, for the chase and crash that happened near 27th and St. Paul on April 23, 2024.

In August, Diallo pleaded guilty to two counts of 1st-Degree Reckless Homicide.

He was sentenced to 25 years in prison and 10 years extended supervision for each count, which will be served consecutively. He has credit for 177 days time served.

As part of a plea agreement, the following charges were dismissed, but read in:

• 2 Counts: Operater Fleeing/Eluding an Officer, Resulting in the Death of Another
• 2 Counts: Felony Bail Jumping
• 1 Count: 1st-Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety

Case details

Diallo was out of jail on a $500 signature bond from Waukesha County in a bail jumping case, after he was pulled over for running a red light.

Late Tuesday night, April 23, the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office says a deputy tried to pull Diallo over.

Instead, Diallo took off and ran a red light at 27th and St. Paul, hitting two vehicles.

In one of them was a 69-year-old man and a 65-year-old woman. Both died. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office identified them as John S. Zablocki and Barbara Zablocki.

“The driver of the second vehicle that was struck, who was the sole occupant, was reportedly uninjured,” said Milwaukee County Sheriff Denita Ball.

“He just slammed into me and then airbags went off and all the smoke and all the other type of junk came off,” said Drew Jefferson, who survived the crash.

Fatal crash at 27th and St. Paul, Milwaukee

The sheriff’s office said Diallo was revived at the scene. A gun and drugs were found, and he shouldn’t have been driving.

Last September, Waukesha County deputies used a drone’s thermal camera to find him hiding in a backyard following a chase and crash.

Diallo was charged in that case, including carrying a concealed weapon and drug charges. He posted a $3,000 bond in that case.

In January 2024, court documents say he ran a red light near 27th and Juneau in Milwaukee. Police say they found a gun magazine and he had a revoked driver’s license.

Vice President Kamala Harris has campaign stops for the 2024 presidential election planned across Wisconsin Thursday, starting in Milwaukee and then heading to La Crosse and Green Bay.

Harris, the Democratic nominee for president, is scheduled to meet with students at UW-Milwaukee.

With less than three weeks to go until Election Day, the campaign trail is especially focused on battleground states like Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Thursday will mark her sixth visit to Wisconsin as a presidential candidate, and her third stop in Milwaukee County. She launched her presidential campaign here in late July with a rally in West Allis.

Harris’ race against former president Donald Trump continues to be extremely tight in its final weeks. In the Marquette University Law School poll released earlier this month, she maintained a four-point lead over Trump in Wisconsin, within the poll’s margin of error. Among both registered and likely voters in Wisconsin, it was 52% for Harris and 48% for Trump.

Kamala Harris is holding campaign events in Milwaukee, La Crosse and Green Bay on Thursday.

Harris is meeting with UW-Milwaukee students at approximately 12:20 p.m. She’ll leave Milwaukee around 1:20 p.m. and head to La Crosse in western Wisconsin.

Harris will then speak at an event in La Crosse around 3:15 p.m. She’ll leave around 4:45 p.m. and head to Green Bay.

She will arrive in Green Bay at about 5:35 p.m. and then speak at an event at 6:15 p.m. Harris will depart Green Bay for Grand Rapids, Michigan, around 7:25 p.m. ahead of campaign events in that swing state on Friday.

Harris’ event at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is labeled as a “meet and greet” with students. Media Milwaukee reported multiple students had received invitations via text message.

East Layton Avenue will be closed between South Pennsylvania and South Howell avenues on Thursday afternoon, the Cudahy Police Department said in a Facebook post.

The northbound on-ramp to Interstate 794 and left turn lane from South Pennsylvania on to East Layton Avenue during Harris’ departure will also be closed.

Dallas Mavericks owner and billionaire businessman Mark Cuban will campaign with Harris in Milwaukee and La Crosse.

Cuban, also one of the celebrity investors of the long-running TV show “Shark Tank,” has been a vocal critic of Trump over the years.

The vice president arrived in Milwaukee on Wednesday night. She stayed at the Pfister Hotel in downtown Milwaukee.

Harris arrived in Milwaukee after holding an event on Wednesday in Pennsylvania. She was in Bucks County at Washington Crossing Historic Park in Upper Makefield Township for a rally.

The event was meant to showcase cross-party support for Harris. Several Republicans were in attendance and spoke at the rally. This was similar to when former Republican Wyoming congresswoman Liz Cheney campaigned and stood on stage with Harris in Ripon, Wisconsin, earlier this month to back the vice president over Trump.

The theme of these rallies has been “Country over Party.”

She was in Eerie, Pennsylvania, on Monday. Like Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and its 19 electoral votes is a critical state for victory for both Harris and Trump.

Harris’ Wisconsin appearances also come a day after she sat down with Fox News host Bret Baier for an interview.

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 5.

Since becoming the Democratic nominee for president after Joe Biden decided against running again, Harris has made Wisconsin a top priority.

She kicked off her campaign at West Allis Central High School in July, held an outdoor rally with new vice president nominee Tim Walz in early August from Eau Claire, hosted a sold-out rally during the second night of the Democratic National Convention at Fiserv Forum in August, energized the base in Wisconsin’s state capital Madison last month and earlier in October visited the home of the Republican Party in Ripon, Wisconsin.
