San Diego police shoot man who opened fire during chase in University City
A San Diego police officer shot and wounded a man who opened fire during a foot chase in University City early Friday morning, authorities said.
The man, who was struck more than once, was taken to a hospital. He is expected to survive.
Police were still looking Friday for a second man who ran in a different direction during the chase. They do not know if he was armed.
About 3:15 am., someone called San Diego police after spotting the two men “tampering with vehicles, breaking into vehicles,” sheriff’s Homicide Lt. Joseph Jarjura told reporters, including OnScene TV.
As part of a reciprocal agreement, the Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Unit handles the investigation when San Diego police shoot someone.
Police arrived at the site, an apartment complex on Lebon Drive south of Nobel Drive, and found two men in a vehicle that had been reported stolen, Jarjura said.
The men took off running — the driver headed south, the passenger headed north. The officers ran after the driver.
Jarjura said the initial investigation indicates the fleeing driver turned around and opened fire on the pursuing officers.
One of the officers fired back, striking the shooter several times, the lieutenant said in a news release.
The shooter went down. Officers provided medical aid until paramedics arrived and took the man to a hospital.
The passenger remains at large. He is described as a Latino man in his 20s, with a medium build. He wore a blue mask, a black hoodie and gray jeans.
Authorities asked anyone with information about the incident to call the Homicide Unit at (858) 285-6330 or after hours at (858) 565-5200.
Anonymous tips can be left by calling Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477 or online at sdcrimestoppers.org.

SAN DIGEO, CA —Red Lobster restaurants in three Southern California locations are “temporarily closed,” according to the company’s website, with dozens more nationwide suddenly shuttered. The closures happened on Monday and, according to social media postings from restaurant employees, the closures came without notice.
The closed restaurants in Southern California include:
- Montclair: 9345 Monte Vista
- San Diego: 8330 Mira Mesa Blvd.
- Torrance: 21233 Hawthorne Blvd.
The majority of California restaurants remain open, but five locations in Northern California are closed. Those include restaurants in Chico, Fremont, Redding, Rohnert Park and Sacramento.
Various media reports put the number of temporary closures nationwide at 80, but those reports include a list of restaurants that only include two of the California closures.
Just last month, Red Lobster reported that it was considering filing for bankruptcy after suffering a substantial loss from its endless shrimp promotion.
The restaurant has been looking for a buyer, but is staggering from multiple problems including being cut off by a key supplier.
On April 18, Red Lobster had the following locations open in California:
