San Diego County may receive $4.1M for youth suicide prevention efforts
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County announced Wednesday it is joining a state pilot program focusing on mental health crisis response to prevent suicides by young people.
According to County Health and Human Services Agency officials, the program will help create new prevention responses, such as systems to continue keeping in contact with and follow-up care for youth who end up in hospital emergency rooms after experiencing thoughts of suicide, harming themselves or attempting suicide.
Additionally, the pilot program may expand the mental health program offerings at schools, including more support, resources and screenings for students and families. The county also wants to improve the outreach, training and suicide-risk screenings in rural communities.
On Tuesday, county supervisors decided to accept a tentative $4.1 million from California’s Department of Public Health to “develop and test models for rapid reporting and comprehensive crisis response at the local level related to youth suicide and suicide attempts” for people under the age of 25.
The money still needs to be approved in the state’s final budget deliberations, according to the county’s website.
Local suicide rates have trended downward as the county’s HHS agency continues making new suicide prevention programs and efforts, according to county officials. That being said, those officials pointed out the county’s rates are still higher than state averages, and suicide is an “urgent, growing problem that needs addressing.”
“Officials said the numbers of suicides between the ages of 15 and 19 increased 29% between 2017 and 2021, and that suicide remains a leading cause of death for San Diegans,” the county’s press release said.
The county highlighted the following programs that could act as a launchpad for the pilot program:

Board Expands Open Space Near Mount Olympus County Preserve
The County took steps Wednesday to buy more land within the Pala-Pauma community for open space and species protection. The Board of Supervisors approved spending $1.2 million to buy 222 acres adjacent to the existing Mount Olympus County Preserve.
The additional acres expand the Mount Olympus County Preserve to more than 1,400 acres, reducing greenhouse gas emissions to support the County’s Climate Action Plan.
County Parks department officials said the land fits into the County’s Multiple Species Conservation Program (MSCP). The program focuses on balancing the protection of plant and animal species with recreation, development and agricultural activities in the region.
Some of the species protected by the program include the coastal California gnatcatcher, San Diego horned lizard, golden eagle, mule deer, and mountain lion.
While the 222 acres were added to the North County area, there has also been progress in the South County area.
In 2023, 411 acres were added to the South County Subarea, bringing the total land conserved by the County and its partners up to 80,519 acres, or 82% of the 98,379-acre conservation goal.
Compared to the prior year, acres added in 2023 represent a 1% increase to the overall conservation goal.
The Department of Parks and Recreation looks at many factors when considering obtaining open space land, including biology, connectivity, accessibility and value.

Cincinnati Reds vs San Diego Padres Prediction
I’m not running to the window to back either the Padres or Reds in their current form. The Padres are the better team on paper, but they’ve been shutout in their last two games. No, thank you. If forced to pick a spot, give me the team that’s getting the better price, and we’re getting plus money with the Cincinnati Reds at home. Nick Martinez also pitched for the Padres the last two season, so he’s familiar with that struggling batting lineup. Michael King has also been hittable this season when he’s not striking batters out. Give me the Reds.

Postgame Observations: Cincinnati Reds End Losing Streak, Beat San Diego Padres 2-0
CINCINNATI — The Reds beat the Padres 2-0 on Tuesday in the first game of a three-game series with San Diego.
They improve to 20-28 on the season and end a three-game losing streak. Here are our postgame observations:
Ace Andrew
Andrew Abbott led the way for Cincinnati, pitching seven scoreless innings and giving up just four hits and one walk. It was the exact performance the Reds needed, especially because they finished with just three hits.
Timely Hitting
The Reds didn’t score in the first inning, despite loading the bases. They might’ve missed an opportunity early, but small ball in the second inning gave them the lead for good.
Jonathan India drew a walk, despite being down in the count 0-2, Will Benson hit a single and the runners advanced on a failed pick-off attempt. Jacob Hurtubise hit a sacrifice fly and Elly De La Cruz followed it up with a double to give the Reds a 2-0 lead.
Bullpen Comes Through
Fernando Cruz and Alexis Diaz delivered. Cruz has struggled in recent weeks and Diaz has had his issues, but both guys came through on a night when the Reds desperately needed them to secure the win.
Broken Chair
Reds manager David Bell broke a chair in frustration after Jake Fraley had to leave the game after being hit by a pitch in the first inning. Initial X-rays came back negative, but Fraley will be re-evaluated on Wednesday.
Bell being frustrated makes sense. The Reds entered Tuesday night having won just three of their last 18 games. They’re dealing with a ton of injuries and five players have been hit on the hand by pitches this season. That fire and passion is something that was good to see and who knows, maybe that helps the Reds get out of what has been an awful month of May.
They play the Padres on Wednesday at 6:40 p.m. ET.
