Southwest Airlines takes aim at Mavericks, Luka Doncic as carrier navigates turbulence over baggage fee policy

Southwest Airlines trolled the Dallas Mavericks over the team’s shocking decision to move on from superstar Luka Doncic.
Doncic was the centerpiece of the blockbuster trade that sent the five-time All-Star to the Los Angeles Lakers early last month, much to the dismay of the majority of the franchise’s fan base. The Mavs received Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a draft pick in exchange for Doncic and a package of other players.

“It’s not like we traded Luka…,” the airline said in an Instagram post on Thursday. The remaining photos in the post touched on the airline’s recently announced changes to its bag policy.
For more than a half-century, Southwest has allowed customers to check their luggage for free, but the airline has faced backlash after revealing it would begin applying a bag fee on May 28.

The airline has not yet shared details on how much travelers will be charged, although the fee for a third checked bag is listed at $150 on Southwest’s website.
Shortly after Donic was traded to the Lakers, fans were seen at a Mavs home game on Feb. 10 with poster-board signs that read, “FIRE NICO.” The sign’s wording referred to Dallas general manager Nico Harrison. Multiple fans were ejected from the game, with a team official citing the NBA’s Code of Conduct.

“In the first incident, the guest brought in a sign that broke the following rule included in the NBA Code of Conduct: Clothing, garments or signs displaying explicit language, profanity or derogatory characterization towards any person(s),” Mavericks vice president of corporate communications Erin Finegold said in a statement.
Mark Cuban, who sold his majority stake in the franchise in 2023, later invited an ejected fan to sit courtside at a future Mavericks game.

Doncic reacted to the trade by saying he was initially in a state of disbelief.
“You can imagine how surprised I was,” he said on Feb. 4. “I had to check if it was April 1. I didn’t really believe it.”
Doncic won his first scoring title last season before leading the Mavs to the NBA Finals. In addition to his five appearances in the NBA All-Star game, he is also a five-time All-NBA selection.

LA-based FOX News correspondent live on air as 4.1 magnitude earthquake hits Southern California

Fox News correspondent Christina Coleman was reporting live on air Sunday afternoon about a missing American college student when a 4.1 magnitude earthquake struck Southern California.
Coleman, who is based in Los Angeles, was reading her script on “Fox Report” when loud rattling echoed in the background for a few seconds.
“I’m sorry, I think we just experienced a minor earthquake here,” she told anchor Jon Scott.

The U.S. Geological Survey said a 4.1 magnitude earthquake rattled the area just after 1 p.m. PST. The epicenter was 7 miles southwest of Westlake Village, a city roughly 35 miles northwest of Los Angeles.
TIPS FOR SURVIVING AN EARTHQUAKE AND PREPARING IN ADVANCE
“It was a good — I would say maybe 3 to 5 seconds of just, like, quick rattling there,” said Coleman. “And, you know, when I’m reading these scripts, you know, that I write, I have them in this teleprompter in front of me, and I’m hyper focused so when it just starts moving like that, you’re like, wait, what’s happening? And how long is this moving going to go on? And do I need to get up and go somewhere else? Well, fortunately, it stopped quickly.”
Scott praised his colleague for finishing her report even as the earthquake was taking place.
“Christina, you once had a bear wander through your live shot, and now you’ve got an earthquake in your live shot. You are a true professional. Good for you,” he said.

Suspect in Miami sexual battery of a minor arrested at high school he works at in Pembroke Pines, police say

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. – Pembroke Pines police officers arrested a Broward County Public Schools employee on Friday at a high school for the sexual battery of a minor in Miami-Dade County, police said.
According to the Miami Police Department, a victim reported two men gave him alcohol and forced him to perform a sex act with them when he was a 17-year-old boy in August at an apartment in the area of North Bayshore Drive and 17 Street.
Detectives identified one of the two men as Joseph Justice Livan, a security monitor at West Broward High School, and the victim, who is not related to the school where Livan works, recognized him, police said.
The victim told a detective that after the sexual assault Livan, 27, and the man gave him a ride home and told him that they would kill him if he told anyone what happened, police said.
Police officers responded to the high school, at 500 NW 209 Ave., on Friday, in Pembroke Pines, arrested Livan, and took him to the Broward County Main Jail in Fort Lauderdale, police said.
According to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office inmate records, Livan had a hold on a warrant for his arrest, and he was awaiting extradition to Miami-Dade County to face charges.
Capt. Adam Feiner, a spokesman for the Pembroke Pines Police Department, asked parents to be “aware of who their children are communicating with through social media and on their cell phones.”
Feiner asked anyone with information about this or other cases to call the Pembroke Pines Police Department at 954-431-2200, or the Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477, or the Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477 to remain anonymous.
