Nov. 29 (UPI) — A Virginia angler casting his line within the Chesapeake Bay stated his most fun catch of the day wasn’t a fish — it was a message in a bottle.
Gregory D’Alessio of Alexandria stated he was fishing close to Maryland’s Solomons Island and having little or no luck on Thanksgiving Day.
“I used to be on my method again to the launch web site after a reasonably unfortunate day of fishing,” D’Alessio informed Newsweek. “I broke one among my favourite rods whereas I used to be reeling in an enormous Rockfish and misplaced the fish.”
The angler stated he was nearly again on the launch web site when he discovered a glass bottle bobbing within the water.
“I noticed this large bottle floating simply off the dock of Bunkys Constitution boat rental so I went over to it to get it out of the water so I may throw it away once I bought again to shore,” he stated.
The bottle turned out to include an obituary and several other small, rolled-up notes. The obituary was for Maryland lady Emma Jean Ennis, who died on the age of 82 in January 2021.
“I did not really open the bottle as a result of I assumed the letters had been private and did not need to pry, it did not appear respectful,” D’Alessio stated.
D’Alessio, who posted photographs of the bottle to Reddit, stated he referred to as a telephone quantity on the obituary that was marked as being for anybody who discovered the bottle.
The person who responded was very grateful, informed me I ‘made their Thanksgiving,’ which made me fairly pleased about having a foul fishing day,” D’Alessio stated.
D’Alessio stated he returned the bottle to the water in accordance with the household’s needs.
“It hasn’t traveled far however I am positive it has a protracted journey forward of it,” he stated. “Hopefully it makes its method again out to the bay and perhaps even the Atlantic ocean. No telling the place it may find yourself actually.”
BALTIMORE — An Ellicott City woman pleaded guilty Thursday to embezzling more than $1 million from a real estate agency and using the funds to pay for vacations, Taylor Swift tickets and more, according to the Maryland U.S. Attorney’s Office.
According to her guilty plea, between January 2020 and November 2023, Jennifer Tinker, 41, defrauded the real estate agency that she worked for by transferring over $1 million of company funds to her personal bank accounts, officials said.
Tinker embezzled the funds from the agency’s escrow, operating and commission accounts through wire transfers and Zelle payments, according to court officials.
She hid the transfers by listing fake recipients on the wire transfer paperwork in an effort to make it look legitimate. She would then wire the stolen money to her personal account.
Court officials said between February 2021 and November 2023, Tinker wired money to her personal accounts more than 90 times. She also made fraudulent entries in her employer’s internal accounting records to cover her transfers.
According to court officials, Tinker used the stolen funds to pay for luxury items and vacations, along with Taylor Swift tickets and five different vehicles.
In 2023, tickets to see Taylor Swift in concert were notoriously expensive and hard for fans to get their hands on, with some reportedly paying upwards of 70 times face value.
Tinker faces a maximum of 20 years in prison for the federal wire fraud charges. She is scheduled for sentencing on April 10, 2024, court officials said.
