Atlanta News First’s ‘Books to Kids’ visits Lee Street Elementary in Jonesboro
JONESBORO, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – A good book can open us up to the world. That’s why Atlanta News First is on a mission to distribute as many books as possible to metro Atlanta children.
Students at Lee Street Elementary School are on the receiving end of free books. On Friday, each student in grades PreK through 5th will receive a goodie backpack stuffed with five books – for a total of 2,680 books donated.
Since ANF started the “Books to Kids” program in 2018, the station, along with its many partners, has distributed more than 75,000 books to more than 15,000 children throughout metro Atlanta.
During Friday’s book giveaway in Clayton County, students will have the opportunity to participate in storytime with ANF anchors, reporters, and meteorologists – as well as Georgia State University athletes and cheerleaders.
Statistics show if kids are not reading proficiently by 3rd grade, they most likely will never catch up. Third grade is when children make the shift from learning to read to reading to learn.
Atlanta News First partners with several organizations and businesses throughout the metro including – Ken Nugent – attorneys at law, Troncalli Subaru and Subaru of Kennesaw, Delta Community Credit Union, McDonald’s, Page Turners Make Great Learners, Two Men and a Truck, Georgia State University, and the Georgia Department of Education.

Did Falcons Get Steal Of Draft? Contract Details
Former Oregon Duck defensive end Brandon Dorlus was drafted No. 109 overall to the Atlanta Falcons in the 2024 NFL Draft. Fresh off his best season yet, Atlanta could have just gotten a draft steal.
There was a generous sentiment that Dorlus should have gotten more buzz during the draft process.
The 6-foot-3, 283-pound Dorlus ran the 40 in a killer 4.85 seconds at the NFL Combine. His time was second among DL only to Florida State’s Branden Fiske.
FIT WITH ATLANTA
Physical and forceful, Dorlus played everywhere on the defensive line for Oregon. His versatility will play well in the NFL, which loves a hybrid player. Dorlus naturally fits as a power end in both 4-3 and 3-4 schemes, though teams might consider having him bulk up to assume a full-time role as a 3-technique.
CONTRACT
Dorlus’ four-year contract with the Falcons is projected to be worth $4,842,396, with a $822,396 signing bonus, according to OverTheCap.com
PRO COMPARISON
Dorlus is compared to Carlos Dunlap by NFL.com because of their similar pass rushing and run stopping ability. Dunlap earned two Pro Bowl selections and won a Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2022.
COLLEGE CAREER
In 2023, Dorlus lead the Ducks with a career-high 5 sacks and added 6.5 tackles for loss, 25 total tackles, nine passes defended and one fumble recovery. Dorlus earned an All-Pac-12 first-team defense selection.
Dorlus played five seasons with the Ducks and improved each year, finishing with 106 total tackles, 12 sacks and 27 tackles for loss. He signed as a three-star recruit out of Deerfield Beach (Fla.) in the class of 2019.
Dorlus is the fifth Duck drafted so far in the 2024 NFL Draft, joining Bo Nix, Jackson Powers-Johnson, Troy Franklin and Khyree Jackson.

Legendary Atlanta hip-hop producer Rico Wade laid to rest
ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – On Friday legendary Atlanta hip-hop producer Rico Wade was laid to rest. The music icon died at age 52 earlier this month.
A private service was held at Ebenezer Baptist Church, led by Rev. Raphael Warnock.
“In a real sense his music has been a part of the soundtrack of our lives. And while I’m the pastor of this church and a Senator from Georgia, we are roughly the same age. He’s a couple years younger than me, so to see someone like him come from where he came from, telling the stories of kids like him, I think is so important,” Rev. Warnock said.
Wade was a trailblazing and innovative musical talent known for discovering hip-hop duo OutKast and helping launch the careers of artists like TLC and Goodie Mob. He was also a founding member of The Dungeon Family, an Atlanta-based music collective made up of famous hip hop, funk, and soul artists.
“I grew up with him all through the music and all that, so I’m going to miss him a whole lot. He’s been a very big influence on hip hop in Atlanta,” Gregory Gibbs said.
“Just to be here on the day he marks his ending on the earth, just you know, his blessings will still outpour on others,” Mekisha Smith said.
After the service, Wade’s casket was loaded into a horse-drawn carriage and driven through his hometown streets. Atlanta rappers Killer Miker, 2 Chainz, and T.I. were all in attendance.
“It takes a great spirit, a person with a generous heart to summon this crowd to one place at one time,” Rev. Warnock said.
