An Illinois high school track athlete suffered an unimaginable injury while warming up for the triple jump at a meet last month.
Dylan Wescott, of Rock Falls High School, broke his neck in a freak accident that left him paralyzed from the chest down. The 18-year-old has been rehabbing at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab and has been able to sit in a wheelchair since about a week after the March 15 catastrophe.

Rock Falls High School head track coach Eric Bontz shared the horrific details in an interview with KWQC-TV.
“He was warming up in the triple jump, just doing run throughs, and as he was going through the sand, he tripped either over his own feet or over the sand, and kind of stumbled, and was kind of running as he was stumbling, and just fell head first into the wall,” Bontz said.
Wescott went through 12 hours of surgery immediately after the accident, according to the Daily Gazette. He had two cages inserted to stabilize his neck with a vertebra was replaced with a titanium plate.

Eastern Iowa EMS crews train on motorcycle crash response
DUBUQUE, Iowa (KCRG) – Eastern Iowa EMS crews received specialized training Saturday on how to treat motorcyclists after a crash.
Course instructor Frank Prowant teaches the course, called Two-Wheel Trauma through nonprofit ABATE of Iowa, because EMS providers typically receive no specific training in motorcycle trauma.
“The motorcyclist is the one taking all the impact of an accident, all the force. There’s no airbags, no steering wheel that’s preventing further injury to them,” Prowant said.
Two-Wheel Trauma has been teaching first responders since 1986.
Prowant said ridership has grown over the years, and so have the crashes.
“We’ve went from just motorcycles to now we’re seeing e-bikes. We’re seeing electric scooters. We’re seeing all kinds of different motorcycles that are out there. And a lot of different injuries,” Prowant said.
Another instructor, Dick “Slider” Gilmore, said Iowa’s large riding community makes the training critical.
He said the Dubuque area draws heavy riding traffic.
“With the Mississippi River and all the cool places. We’re all drawn to this in the summertime. So, this area is maybe more important than most other places in Iowa because it’s where we gravitate to on our bikes,” Gilmore said.
Organizers plan to make the Dubuque training an annual event.

LOOK: 5-star CB Joshua Dobson on his Michigan football visit
Michigan football’s big recruiting weekend is next week, but this weekend features arguably its top target of the 2027 cycle on his official visit.
2027 Cornelius (N.C.) William Amos Hough five-star Joshua Dobson is currently on campus as of this writing, having made his way to Ann Arbor for the weekend of June 12. Rated the No. 6 overall player per Rivals’ proprietary rankings, the cornerback has been trending toward the maize and blue over the past month, after it had appeared that Texas A&M had a comfortable lead. However, the more time has gone by, the more likely it’s appeared that Michigan could be his school of choice.
Pictures have emerged of Dobson on his official visit. You can see him in a winged helmet below.
Michigan currently has two cornerbacks pledged to the 2027 class, both four-stars. Blake Jenkins is the Wolverines’ most recent pledge, while Darius Johnson made his commitment in the middle of the month of May.
Texas A&M still has an insurmountable lead in the Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine, at 86.3%, while South Carolina has a 3.1% chance, Auburn a 1.8% chance, and Clemson a 1.3% chance. He visited College Station last weekend but didn’t commit as many thought was possible. He will be seeing South Carolina next weekend to close out his official visit slate. He saw Auburn the final weekend of May, and LSU, which had been high up his list at one point, has been eliminated, as he was supposed to see the Tigers this weekend but switched it to Michigan.
