Detroit City FC wrapped up its road swing on a good note.

Le Rouge snapped a two-game skid and a five-game winless streak on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over USL Championship newcomer Rhode Island FC at Beirne Stadium.

DCFC got on the board in the 36th minute when Maxi Rodriguez was in the right place at the right time. After some crisp passing led to a shot in the box by Victor Bezerra that was blocked by the keeper, the ball found Rodriguez in front of the open net.

Le Rouge doubled its advantage in the second half when Bezerra got another scoring opportunity inside the box. This time, Bezerra finished and beat the keeper with a shot into the lower-right corner to make it 2-0 in the 64^th minute.

Carlos Saldaña put up the clean sheet in goal to help Detroit City (6-3-2) get back to its winning ways and record its first USL Championship victory since April 20.

DCFC will return to action on Saturday, June 15, when it hosts Charleston Battery in its first home match in over a month. Kickoff is at 4 p.m.

It turned out to be a banner day for Novi Detroit Catholic Central athletics.

On the heels of its golf team earning another state title earlier in the day, the Shamrocks hoisted another trophy Saturday afternoon by winning the Division 1 boys lacrosse title with a 14-8 victory over Hartland at the University of Michigan.

Catholic Central, trailing 6-3 at halftime, stormed back in the second half to subdue the Eagles, who were coming off a dramatic 11-10 state semifinal overtime victory on Thursday over 16-time D1 champion Birmingham Brother Rice.

Sophomore attack Luke Zajdel helped spearhead the second-half comeback as he finished with five goals as CC (21-3) captured its second state crown in school history after finishing runner-up last year to Rice.

Junior attack Lachlan Moffatt chipped with three goals as the Shamrocks outscored Hartland, 11-2, over the final 24 minutes.

Catholic Central held a huge advantage in winning faceoffs going 21 of 25, including 14-for-14 in the final two periods. The Shamrocks also outshot Hartland, 57-25, and won the ground ball battle, 46-19.

Hartland (19-4), the 2022 D1 champion, couldn’t ask for a better start, taking a 3-0 first-period lead on unassisted goals by Easton Culver and Dylan Ayotte, along with one by Connor Gilbert (from Drew Lockwood).

In the second period, Catholic Central ended a 14-minute, 34-second scoring drought on a goal by Zajdel (from Jack Smiley) to cut the deficit to 3-1 with 9:26 left.

But the Eagles maintained their three-goal advantage, 6-3, at halftime on goals by Jacob Ross (unassisted), Lockwood (from Culver) and Clayton Penzien (from Lockwood).

CC countered with two goals, by Francisco Williams (unassisted) and Ryan Dye (from Conner Lukas).

But the third quarter belonged to the Shamrocks, who outscored Hartland, 6-1, on two goals apiece by Matthew Aleva and Zajdel, coupled with one each by Laclan Moffatt and Williams.

Meanwhile, Hartland’s lone third period goal came from Ayotte (unassisted) to make it 7-5 with 6:31 to play in the half.

The Catholic Central offensive assault continued in the final period as Zajdel and Moffatt each scored twice, while Lukas contributed another goal and assist (along with Smiley).

Meanwhile, Max Kotsilidis scored for Hartland.

Hartland freshman goalie Nate Anderer was spectacular throughout the match making a total of 19 saves, while his counterpart Tyler Lammers of CC made 11.

Catholic Central’s other state title came in 2018. The Shamrocks have been state runner-up nine times.

As the Detroit Pistons struggled on a nightly basis throughout the 2023-2024 NBA season, it became clear they were likely to sell off veteran players at the trade deadline back in February.

While that was the case for the most part, the Pistons still landed a solid veteran from the Utah Jazz, who could be back for another run beyond last season.

Italy-born forward Simone Fontecchio wrapped up a two-season run with the Jazz in February. Last season, he appeared in 50 games with Utah, averaging nine points on 39 percent shooting from beyond the arc.

At the trade deadline, the Jazz moved Fontecchio to Detroit in exchange for Kevin Knox, a second-round pick, and the rights to Gabriele Procida.

Fontecchio turned out to be a steal for the Pistons, based on his small sample size with the team. Detroit continued to struggle overall, but Fontecchio was a bright spot.

In 16 games, he averaged 30 minutes on the floor and started nine outings. The veteran put up 15 points per game, while shooting 43 percent from beyond the arc.

With the 2023-2024 NBA season in the rearview, Fontecchio enters the offseason as a restricted free agent. He’ll have the opportunity to garner offers from interested suitors. If he signs an offer sheet with another team, the Pistons will be on the clock to match.

What’re the chances Fontecchio returns to Detroit for another run? The Athletic’s James Edwards is under the impression there is a high chance Fontecchio is back in Detroit next year.

“[Fontecchio] has made it very clear that he wants to return to Detroit next season. He enjoys playing with Cunningham, he enjoys the shots he gets playing alongside Cunningham and has told me that he enjoys playing in front of the Pistons’ fan base. If Fontecchio were able to, he’d sign right now, I believe.”

At the end of the 2023-2024 season, Fontecchio battled a toe injury, which recently required surgery. A team-released statement noted that Fontecchio should be good to go for training camp.

While the Pistons can’t guarantee the 28-year-old will be back at this time, it seems another team would have to price out the Pistons, which will be difficult considering they have plenty of cap space to spend this summer.

It’s no secret the Pistons should be looking to make a series of moves as they are coming off of a 14-win season. Allowing Fontecchio to walk should not be one of them.

Surrounding Cade Cunningham with proven shooters should be a priority for Detroit, and Fontecchio has proven he’s the right fit. In 118 career games, Fontecchio has knocked down 38 percent of his threes. He’s an ideal role player for this Detroit team.
