Iran threatens 'nightmare' for Israel as UN watchdog warns Tehran nuclear programs runs unchecked
Iran on Monday continued its threat of a “nightmare” attack on Israel following the killing of Hamas leader Ismail HaniyehΒ in late July, as international concerns remain high over Tehranβs nuclear development program which has run unchecked for more than three years.Β
Commander of Iranβs Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Hossein Salami said “the nightmare of Iran’s inevitable response is shaking Israel day and night,” reported the Jerusalem Post, citing Saudi-owned news outlet Al-Arabiya.
The commander reportedly claimed that Israeli leaders are anxious over the ambiguous threat of what will be a “painful and different” attack than “what you expec[t].”

HEZBOLLAH RELIES ON ‘SOPHISTICATED’ TUNNEL SYSTEM BACKED BY IRAN, NORTH KOREA IN FIGHT AGAINST ISRAEL
Despite the ominous tone set by Salami, Iran has been levying similar threats for over a month at the Jewish state following the killing of Haniyeh during a visit to Tehran on July 31.
Iran has laid the blame squarely on Israel for the assassination, in which it claimed a precision strike missile was used, though Jerusalem has not taken credit for the killing.
The U.S., along with other Middle Eastern nations, have warned Tehran against attacking Israel amid fears that a broader regional war could break out, though concerns remain that Iran could look to launch retaliatory strikes through Hezbollah β the Lebanon-based terrorist organization it has backed for decades.Β
A member of Israelβs Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee in the Knesset, Nissim Vaturi, echoed these concerns on Monday and said he believes it is just “a matter of days”Β before war between Israel and Hezbollah breaks out in Lebanon.Β
Vaturi said Israel needs to take a provocative approach and pre-emptively strike Hezbollah’s strong holds in Lebanon through a series of airstrikes followed by ground invasion β a scenario experts have warned will cause casualty rates that could be higher than those that have incurred during the nearly one-year-long war in Gaza.
“IΒ think itβs time to deal with the north,” he said, according to The Times of Israel. “Our patience has run out.
“Thereβs no other way,” he continued, adding that Beirutβs Dahiyeh suburb β a major stronghold for Hezbollah outside the capital city β “will look like Gaza.”
Iran has yet to specify how it intends to launch this long-awaited retaliatory strike against Israel, though its reported supply of ballistic missiles to the terrorist organization has kept security experts on heightened alert.Β

HEZBOLLAH IS THE ‘X-FACTOR’ IN LOOMING ISRAEL, IRAN WAR WITH ‘NATION STATE CAPABILITIES’
Iran is not believed to possess nuclear grade weaponry at this time, but a warning issued by the United Nations nuclear watchdog on Monday once again brought renewed attention to the fact that Tehranβs nuclear program has run uncheckedΒ for the last three and half years.Β
“It has been more than three and a half years since Iran stopped implementing its nuclear-related commitments under the JCPOA,” Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Mariano Grossi told the agencyβs board of directors. “Therefore, it is also over three and a half years since the Agency was able to conduct complementary access in Iran.Β
“Consequently, the Agency has lost continuity of knowledge in relation to the production and inventory of centrifuges, rotors and bellows, heavy water and uranium ore concentrate,” he added.Β
Grossi said that Iran is known to have increased its stockpiles of highly enriched uranium metals of not only 20% purity levels, but 60% β which is just shy of the steps needed to reach weapons grade uranium which is enriched to 90% purity.

“There has been no progress in resolving the outstanding safeguards issues,” he said, pointing to Iranβs false claims that it has declared all nuclear activities, materials and locations. Β “I call upon Iran to implement the Joint Statement through serious engagement with the Agencyβs concrete proposals.”
Rossi said he called on new Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to abide by agreements made under a March 4, 2023 joint statement and urged the president to meet with him in the “not too distant future” so the pair could “establish a constructive dialogue that leads swiftly to real results.”

The European Union (EU) on Monday further accused Iran of providing short range ballistic missiles to Russia to aid its war effort against Ukraine, citing “credible” information provided by allied nations, reported Radio Free Europe.Β
The EU is reported to still be investigating the information, but EU spokesman Peter StanoΒ said if Iran is discovered to have provided the escalatory arms to Moscow, the response would be “swift” and would include “new and significant restrictive measures against Iran.”
The Kremlin on Monday did not directly deny having been sent the missiles which are capable of carrying nuclear, chemical and conventional warheads.Β

Colin Jost Says βSNLβ Rejected Joke About Pete Hegseth Reading βPulp Fictionβ Bible Verse Two Weeks Before It Happened in Real Life
Donald Trumpβs defense secretary Pete Hegseth was widely mocked in April after he read a fake Bible verse from Quentin Tarantinoβs 1994 classic βPulp Fictionβ during a Pentagon worship service. It turns out Colin Jost sort of saw it coming.
During a recent visit to βThe Tonight Show,β Jost revealed that before Hegsethβs viral gaffe he told the βSNLβ writers room: βWould it be funny if Hegseth just did that Bible verse that they have in βPulp Fictionβ Remember, from Ezekiel, Samuel L. Jackson?β
The writers shot down Jostβs pitch, deeming it βtoo ridiculousβ and claiming it βwould take up all this time in the cold open. βAnd then he for real did it, like two weeks later and I was like, βWell, the good news is, Iβm being surveilled, so thatβs a relief.ββ Jost has been playing Hegseth on βSNLβ this season to much acclaim from critics and viewers.
The real Hegseth was at a Pentagon prayer service in April when he read the altered version of Ezekiel 25:17 thatβs delivered by Samuel L. Jacksonβs character in βPulp Fictionβ before he shoots a man. Hegseth said the prayer was recited by the βSandy 1β Combat Search and RescueΒ (CSAR) mission in Iran.
Calling on everyone to pray with him, Hegseth then read a prayer that was nearly word-for-word the line delivered by Jackson in Tarantinoβs film: βThe path of the downed aviator is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who in the name of camaraderie and duty shepherds the lost through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brotherβs keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to capture and destroy my brother, and you will know my call sign is Sandy 1 when I lay my vengeance upon thee. Amen.β

The man was detained and was being questioned at police headquarters as authorities worked to determine whether he was under the influence of substances or acted deliberately, the mayor said.
Mezzetti said the vehicle entered one of the cityβs main streets and “drove onto the sidewalk, sending several people flying,” before crashing into the shop window.

Lampedusa migrant landing: newborn dies, probe opened
Published on β’Updated
A tragedy unfolded in the night between Friday and Saturday on the island of Lampedusa, where a newborn migrant baby girl just a few weeks old died of hypothermia immediately after disembarking and while being rushed to the island’s outpatient clinic.

At 4.30 a.m., after being rescued by the V1307 patrol boat of the Guardia di Finanza, 55 people from Cameroon, CΓ΄te d’Ivoire, Gambia, Guinea, Mali, Nigeria and Sierra Leone landed at Favarolo pier. Among them were seven women and six minors. The baby girl, whose condition immediately appeared critical, was taken together with her mother to the medical facility, where doctors could do nothing but declare her dead.
Investigation opened into the baby girl’s death
The Agrigento prosecutor’s office has opened an inquiry into the tragic case and ordered a post-mortem examination of the child’s body, a necessary step to confirm hypothermia as the actual cause of death.
The body is being transferred to the mortuary at the Cala Pisana cemetery, while in the coming hours the mother will be questioned by investigators to reconstruct the details of the crossing and establish exactly how and when the baby fell ill.
According to accounts from other migrants on board, the group had set off from Sfax-El Amra in Tunisia at around two o’clock yesterday morning, making the journey in a seven-metre metal boat that cost between 400 and 600 euros per person.
The baby girl’s mother, originally from CΓ΄te d’Ivoire, was later taken to the hotspot in the Imbriacola district together with her other daughter, aged around two. According to reports, the woman is currently in a severe state of shock over the loss of her child and is receiving continuous support from staff of the Italian Red Cross, which manages the island’s reception centre.
The centre’s director, Imad Dalil, confirmed to Italian media that psychosocial support measures had been activated. “The mother and the sister are here in the hotspot and are in good physical condition; for them and for the other people psychological support was activated immediately and in the coming hours the medical and psychosocial teams will continue their work,” he said.
NGOs’ reaction
The German NGO Sea-Watch voiced its outrage in a strongly worded post on X. “While the state attacks those who save lives at sea, investigating the captain of Sea-Watch, a one-month-old baby has arrived in LAMPEDUSA, dead in her mother’s arms, after a three-day crossing. Who will be held responsible for this injustice?” The outburst refers to the news, received by the NGO after arriving in Brindisi with 166 rescued people, that a criminal investigation has been opened against the captain of the Sea-Watch 5 on suspicion of aiding illegal entry.
The UN agency specialising in the protection and assistance of people forced to flee war, violence and persecution (UNHCR) also intervened to express deep condolences and grave concern over yet another victim claimed along the Mediterranean routes.
“A mother has lost her newborn daughter, who arrived dead this morning together with 54 other people in Lampedusa. Deep sorrow and concern for the many children and adults who should not be dying in the Mediterranean,” reads a post published on social media by UNHCR, which explains that the agency is on the ground providing assistance to the mother and all the other survivors of the landing.
