Informational meetings about Nevada-Wynford Lions Club planned
An old solution club is intending to locate brand-new life in the Wynford college area.
The Nevada Lions Club commemorated its 75th wedding anniversary in 2015, stated Kevin Reidy, the present Area 13 OH2 guv for Lions International. However the 10 participants are all senior; he approximated the youngest goes to the very least 70.
“They have actually lived healthy and balanced, durable lives; they have actually been devoted Lions; they’re simply worn out,” Reidy, a participant of the Savannah Lions Club in Ashland Region, stated. “And also I value that.”
However he thinks the team still has something to provide the neighborhood, so he’s intending to hire brand-new participants and also redouble the club on the college area.
“We are mosting likely to shift it; we’re mosting likely to maintain the Nevada charter, and also we’re mosting likely to demand from Lions International a name modification to make it Nevada-Wynford Lions Club,” Reidy stated. “That is simply beginning, due to the fact that our major objective is expanding the subscription. So the Nevada-Wynford Lions, we’re mosting likely to have 2 informative conferences,” at 6:30 p.m. Monday and also 6:30 p.m. April 28 in the Wynford neighborhood area.
Recognized ‘this club deserved conserving’
Reidy stated when he initially entered into his workplace, he knew that the charter member were decreasing. They weren’t conference in Nevada any longer due to the fact that there’s no dining establishment in the town, so they would certainly been fulfilling at The Town Dining Establishment in Upper Sandusky for greater than a years.
However concerning a year back, Reidy obtained an e-mail from a first-grade Wynford educator, asking whether the Lions Club still gave eye examinations and also glasses.
“I stated yes, definitely, so I placed her in contact with the head of state of the Nevada club,” he stated. “They gave the eye examination, they obtained the woman suitabled for glasses … they looked after that girl. I recognized then that this club deserved conserving, due to the fact that where do Wynford colleges select a comparable requirement in the future?”
There’s a Lions Club in Bucyrus, yet it concentrates on Bucyrus City Schools, he stated. Colonel Crawford and also Crestline have extremely energetic clubs, and also in March, a Lions Club was hired in the New Washington, Chatfield and also Tiro location — the Buckeye Central college area.
“So my idea was, this is something worth conserving,” Reidy stated. “So we started considering transitioning Nevada from a community-based club to a school-based or district-based club.”
As component of its current building and construction and also remodelling job, Wynford colleges changed the previous secondary school snack bar right into an area area, he kept in mind. “Well, they do not have way too many social work companies aside from school-affiliated companies to load that area.”
A Nevada-Wynford Lions Club appeared an excellent fit.
“It really felt truly crucial,” he stated. “They club’s remained in presence 76 years. When there was a Nevada college, a great deal of the company’s tasks focused on the grade school and also the youngsters, for the neighborhood. Which college’s been gone 20-some years currently.”
Reidy has actually connected to Wynford companies
Reidy stated he spoke with the Wynford board of education and learning at a conference last month, and also has actually connected to companies such as scholastic boosters, sports boosters, songs boosters, FFA graduates and also the college parent-teacher company.
“There is no Kiwanis, there is no Rotating, there are no social companies that I understand in the college area region itself, like an Elks, an Eagles, a Moose — I imply, they remain in Bucyrus. They remain in Upper,” he stated. “It would certainly be a pity to shed that solution company identification for the college area.”
Reidy stated he has actually designed this concept off of Colonel Crawford Lions Club, which was established in 1971, “and also it really did not begin as North Robinson, they began as the Colonel Crawford Lions Club.” It likewise has an extremely energetic Leo Club, he stated, clarifying Leo is a phrase for Management, Experience, Possibility.
“I simply assume that not having a Lions visibility in the Wynford college area would certainly be a space that they do not also understand,” Reidy stated. “It’s developing understanding, it’s developing a feeling of objective and also a method which the club and also the neighborhood and also the associate companies can all companion with each other. We team up with various other teams … we would certainly not take on them for bucks.”
He stated he knows Wynford has an energetic Interact Club, yet this is various; it’s attempting to take “social work past the college experience and also lugging that onward as a young person.” The hope is that current grads that remain in the neighborhood will certainly obtain included, as well.
“That’s something that you intend to motivate,” Reidy stated. “Those are among those basic, fundamental worths that assist areas grow and also expand. And also without that link to neighborhood, what do you have? And also therein exists the important things of why we really feel, as an area, that it is very important.”

Driver’s close call near Emerald Bay highlights danger on icy Sierra Nevada roads
TRUCKEE — With another weather system just about done with Northern California, roads in the Northern California high country are open but still potentially treacherous on Christmas Day.
As of noon, there are no restrictions on both Interstate 80 and Highway 50 in the Sierra Nevada.
The same can’t be said for the smaller highways, however.
On Highway 89, Caltrans says chains or snow tires are required from Truckee to the Sierra/Plumas County line, and from Truckee to around 11 miles north of Truckee.
Highlighting how dangerous the conditions could be, on Christmas morning California Highway Patrol posted about a driver who nearly went completely off the side of the road near Emerald Bay. The vehicle had to be towed out.
Further south, along Highway 88, Caltrans says chains are also still required on all vehicles from 6.5 miles east of Peddler Hill in Amador County to about 5 miles west of Picketts Junction in Alpine County.
Another impactful weather system is expected to arrive by Thursday in Northern California

LETTER: Let’s consider how much growth Southern Nevada can accomodate
Neither of the authors of “Homesteading 2.0” (Dec. 15 Review-Journal) lives in Nevada. Yet, they believe they are qualified to advocate for increased development of our public lands.
To date, much new development has focused on luxury housing and green energy projects, rather than the need for affordable housing. While the authors acknowledge our successful conservation efforts, they fail to mention that current residents are being heavily regulated by the water authority, facing penalties, and pressured to reduce water usage. Lawns are being replaced with desert landscaping, and ongoing development to accommodate growth is contributing to the urban heat island effect. This growth has led to more congested roadways, wildlife encroaching into urban areas due to habitat loss and reduced access to recreational spaces that residents once enjoyed.
One of the defining features of Las Vegas was the open space surrounding the valley, which has long been a unique advantage of living in the Southwest. We must carefully consider how much growth we are willing to support moving forward.
