The Washington Capitals announced the roster that will dress for their penultimate preseason tilt against the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena on Monday night (7 PM ET, Monumental Sports Network in-market, ESPN+ out-0f-market).

Defenseman Rasmus Sandin will make his preseason debut after reporting to training camp late due to visa issues.

Washington is expected dress most of their expected opening night lineup for October 12 vs. the New Jersey Devils, except the team’s first-line of Alex Ovechkin, Dylan Strome, and Andrew Mangiapane and top defensive pairing of Jakob Chychrun and John Carlson, all of whom have played the past two games.

The roster also features three recent first-round picks by the team in centers Connor McMichael (25th overall, 2019) and Hendrix Lapierre (22nd, 2020) in addition to left-wing Ivan Miroshnichenko (20th, 2022).

Left-wing Jakub Vrana, who is attending Washington’s training camp on a PTO agreement, will play his third consecutive game and fourth overall after notching a goal and an assist in his last two.

Logan Thompson will play the whole game in net, according to head coach Spencer Carbery.

Columbus defeated Washington by a score of 8-4 in the District on Friday in the first of the two’s home-and-home set.

Washington’s final preseason game will take place at Capital One Arena on Saturday against the Boston Bruins (5 PM ET, Monumental Sports Network locally, NHL Network nationally).

GILLETTE — The Wyoming State Tennis Tournament wrapped up in Gillette over the weekend, with athletes from Green River and Rock Springs showcasing their skills against the state’s best. Both schools had impressive runs in the tournament, with players coming close to making deep runs in their respective brackets.

For the Green River boys, Jake Nielsen fell just two wins short of a top-four finish in the Boys #2 Singles bracket. The Boys #2 Doubles team of Dodson and Neher also came close, needing just one more win to secure a place among the top four finishers. In Boys #3 Doubles, Maez and Myers won their opening match but were defeated in the second round by Brown and Miller of Sheridan, who finished second in the tournament. Neher, Hokanson, and Dylan Archibald also represented the Wolves in Gillette.

On the girls’ side, Rylin Arnell made a strong start by winning her first-round match in Girls #1 Singles but fell in the second round to state champion Hailey Mathis-Brietkopf from Cheyenne Central. Arnell was just two wins away from a top-four finish. In Girls #2 Singles, Grace Gomez also won her opening match but lost to Rosey Jones from Jackson, who ended up as the tournament’s runner-up. Wahl and English competed in #2 Doubles, winning their first match before falling to Wassink and Dansie from Cody, who went on to finish third. Lopez, Beutel, Davis, and Britton also competed for Green River.

The Rock Springs boys had a strong showing in Boys #1 Doubles, with Aanerud and Wiberg advancing to the third round. They fell to Romer and Christensen of Kelly Walsh, who ultimately won the state championship. In Boys #2 Doubles, Swafford and Powell won their first match but were eliminated by Bingham and Benniga from Jackson, who placed fourth. Jenkins and Powell won their opening match in Boys #3 Doubles but were defeated in the second round by Schutz and Gorman of Cheyenne East, who went on to take third. Tanner Tryzbiak and Emilio Corona also competed for the Tigers in singles matches.

For the Rock Springs girls, Evie Long fell in her first-round match in Girls #2 Singles but returned to win her first game in the third-place bracket before facing Green River’s Grace Gomez, ending her run there. Cumorah Shuler, Turnwall, Atwood, Killpack, Asper, Anderson, and Miller also represented the Rock Springs Tigers.

Overall, Green River’s boys finished 12th, while Rock Springs’ boys placed 14th. The Green River girls took 10th, with the Rock Springs girls finishing 14th. Despite the challenging competition, both teams demonstrated resilience and determination.

Police in Seattle will no longer be dispatched to burglary alarms based solely on sensors or motion activators beginning next week in a move that is catching many security system companies off guard.

“Our biggest fear is that crime is going to go up, and we do not want crime to go up,” Washington Alarm CEO Shannon Woodman told Fox News Digital Wednesday.

Beginning Oct. 1, the Seattle Police Department will only dispatch officers to alarm calls that come with “supporting evidence, such as audio, video, panic alarms or eyewitness evidence” that someone is breaking into a home or business, according to a letter interim police chief Sue Rahr sent to alarm companies.

“Of the 13,000 alarm calls in 2023, less than 4% were confirmed to have a crime associated with them that resulted in an arrest or reporting being written,” Rahr wrote in the letter dated Sept. 13.

Most calls were the result of an accidental sensor trip by a homeowner or business employee, Rahr wrote, or old or failing equipment.

“With depleted resources, we cannot prioritize a patrol response when there is a very low probability that criminal activity is taking place,” Rahr continued, an apparent nod to the department’s ongoing staffing shortages.

Woodman said she understands police resources are strained, but argued that requiring tens of thousands of alarm users to install costly video security systems is just not feasible, especially given the short notice. She only received the letter last week.

And around 85% of customers never have an issue with false alarms, Woodman said, pointing to industry research from major cities.

“We can’t solve false alarm problems by taking police response away,” she said.

Woodman and several other Seattle alarm company representatives pushed back on the SPD policy change in a public safety committee meeting this week.

“Law enforcement and the security industry can work together to come up with a solution [to false alarms] that benefits our customers in a way that doesn’t leave them stranded and vulnerable at the most dangerous moment,” Ashley Barber told city council members Tuesday, citing her 13 years in the security industry.

Woodman said she supports policies like billing users with frequent false alarms. The national Security Industry Alarm Coalition supports verified response only for customers who “burden law enforcement with multiple false alarms,” according to a report shared with Fox News Digital.

Rahr’s office did not respond to a request for comment on Wednesday.

SPD has struggled to refill its ranks after losing hundreds of officers over the past few years.

The department had nearly 1,400 officers before the pandemic, The Seattle Times reported. Staffing has since plunged to around 930 fully trained officers, despite Seattle offering the highest salary in the state.

City councillors appear ready to approve a $50,000 bonus for experienced hires, the highest of any nearby city, the Times reported.
