Miami Heat’s Overtime Victory Earns Them NBA Summer League Championship

The Miami Heat fanbase can finally celebrate during their rather dull offseason, as the team won the NBA Summer League championship on Monday.

The Heat defeated the Memphis Grizzlies in an overtime thriller, hitting the target score of 120. It was former first-round pick Josh Christopher who delivered when it mattered most, drilling a stepback three-pointer with the Grizzlies just two points shy of sealing the game.

He finished the night with 24 points, four rebounds, three steals, and a pair of blocks on 6 of 10 shooting from the arc. Christopher was awarded MVP honors for the championship game. Second-round pick Pelle Larsson delivered the game-ending shot on a tough drive to the basket, which was immediately followed by celebration. Larsson recorded 16 points and four assists in Monday’s game, but played an even more crucial role for the Heat to reach the championship.

Rookie Kel’el Ware and athletic forward Alondes Williams also contributed at a high level, combining for 42 points and 15 rebounds on efficient shooting. Ware’s campaign in Las Vegas earned him a spot on the All-Summer League First Team while rising star Jaime Jaquez Jr. appeared on the second.

While this is not the championship fans were hoping to see, it’s refreshing to know the Heat’s future is full of potential.

Inter Miami stars Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez to miss MLS All-Star Game

Inter Miami star Lionel Messi won’t play in the MLS All-Star Game while nursing an ankle injury.

The 37-year-old Messi left the July 14 Copa América final win over Colombia with a right ankle injury. His teammate, Luis Suárez, also won’t play in the game Wednesday in Columbus, Ohio, with what the team described as “knee discomfort.”

Both were listed among the unavailable players by the league on Monday.

Messi, an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner from Argentina, has missed Miami’s wins over Toronto FC and the Chicago Fire. The team said both players’ status for Saturday’s Leagues Cup opening match at home against Mexican club Puebla “will be assessed based on their daily recovery process.”

The MLS All-Star Game pits top players from league clubs against players from Mexico’s Liga MX.

Miami teammates Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba will play Wednesday night.

Real Salt Lake forward Cristian Arango will also miss the All-Star Game while serving a four-game suspension from Major League Soccer for violating the league’s anti-harassment policy. Arango leads MLS with 17 goals and 11 assists.

Man arrested after victim shot in back outside Miami-Dade grocery store

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A 25-year-old man was arrested over the weekend following a shooting outside a Miami-Dade County grocery store in which one person was severely injured.

According to the suspect’s arrest report, the shooting occurred just after 2:45 a.m. Saturday outside Davis Grocery, located at 21630 SW 120th Ave.

Miami-Dade police said officers responded to the area after receiving two ShotSpotter notifications.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found more than 100 spent casings in the roadway and the victim, Tristum Hobbs, laying on the ground with a gunshot wound to his back.

Hobbs was then transported to Jackson South Medical Center in critical condition.

According to the report, a nearby home was also struck by at least one bullet, which entered a bedroom where a woman and her daughter were sleeping.

Police said surveillance video was obtained from the grocery store, which showed a white sedan and a black sedan heading north on Southwest 120th Avenue before coming to a stop at the intersection of 216th Street.

Police said people from both vehicles then began shooting at the victim who was standing near the intersection.

According to the report, officers later located the black car, which was parked at the Princeton Groves Apartments.

“The vehicle had damage consistent with gunshots to the roof and to the front of the vehicle,” the report stated.

Police said a detective conducted surveillance on the vehicle and detained the suspect, Glenn Roy Cassis Jr., of Miami, as he was getting out of the car at about 5:50 a.m.

Cassis had a Glock 17 with an extended magazine in his waistband, authorities said.

According to the report, Cassis was taken to the police station for questioning and provided an admission of some kind, which was redacted from the publicly released report.

Police confirmed, however, that Cassis denied firing a gun.

Cassis was arrested on charges of attempted murder, shooting or throwing a deadly missile, discharging a firearm from a vehicle and use of a firearm while committing a felony.

As of Monday morning, Cassis was being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

It’s unclear how many people remain at large.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.

Mets at Marlins picks and predictions

Prediction

Mets 5, Marlins 2

Moneyline

PASS.

Surprisingly, the Marlins have played the Mets tough, but New York will even their series on Monday evening. As confident as I am, I’ll stay away from the Mets (-172) moneyline and look to the run line.

Run line/Against the spread

BET METS -1.5 (-106).

Peterson has been lights out since rejoining the Mets rotation in late May. He is 1-0 with a 2.16 ERA in July and he hasn’t allowed more than 2 ER in any of his last 5 starts. Peterson may have struggled a bit in his 1st start against the Marlins in 2024, but got the victory.

The Mets have hit better on the road than at Citi Field this season, batting 30 points higher.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 8.5 (-105).

The Under has hit in 3 of the last 4 matchups between these 2 teams.

The Under has also hit in Peterson’s last 2 starts. He has allowed just 13 runs in his last 38 2/3 IP (less than 2 runs per start) since the start of June.

The Marlins have been Under in 3 of their last 4 games. Chirinos is 2-2-1 against the Over in his last 5 starts.
