Miami Baseball: Canes lose series to No. 5 Noles, drop game three 10-6
The University of Miami baseball team (14-11, 1-5 ACC) fell to the fifth-ranked Florida State Seminoles (20-3, 5-1 ACC) Saturday night at Mark Light Field,10-6.
Wes Mendes started for Florida State but lasted only four innings, allowing six earned runs on six hits. Peyton Prescott (2-0) stabilized the game in relief, striking out seven over four scoreless innings to earn the win.
Miami right-handed pitcher Brian Walters (2-1) took the loss after surrendering six earned runs in three innings. Miami’s bullpen allowed just three earned runs the rest of the way, but the early damage done in the fourth inning by the Seminoles proved too much to overcome.
The series’ final game picked up where the first two left off, with both teams scoring runs early.
The Seminoles struck first when Alex Lodise scored on a fielding error by Miami’s Walters after Brody DeLamielleure put the ball in play. Miami battled back the next inning when Daniel Cuvet plated Jake Ogden to tie the score at one. Florida State continued to put the pressure on by tallying another run in the top of the second, with Gage Harrelson notching an RBI single to put the Seminoles back in front, 2-1.
Cuvet singled up the middle with two outs to bring in Fabio Peralta and Ogden – quickly putting the Hurricanes back into the driver’s seat.
Trailing 3-2 entering the fourth, the Seminoles erupted for seven runs on seven hits to break the game open. Walters walked Carter McCulley home to tie the game; then Gage Harrelson brought in two with an RBI single that signified the go-ahead runs. After Chase Williams brought in two more with a single, Myles Bailey and Jaxson West each registered RBI singles to give Florida State a commanding 9-3 lead.
Miami, despite scoring three runs in the next half-inning to make the score 9-6, ran out of momentum on its offensive attack.
The Hurricanes are back in action on Wednesday. They will face Stetson at Mark Light Field, with the first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.

Carson Beck Sidelined: Miami’s Backup QBs Seizing Spring Practice Opportunities

The Miami Hurricanes football team’s spring practice is now in full swing. The team is building towards their 2025 campaign, nevertheless, there is one notable absence. The expected starting quarterback, Carson Beck, joined the team this offseason through the transfer portal from the Georgia Bulldogs.
Beck has been extremely limited as he recovers from an injury suffered in his final game of the college football season. He’s been present at spring practice but has not been able to compete with the other quarterbacks. However, his absence has opened the door for the other quarterbacks to see more opportunities. Opportunities that head coach Mario Cristobal spoke about at spring practice this weekend:
“Football has a funny way of making people step up when they have to step up. That’s what you see, you know? There’s no reliance. They want to go in there and make plays. These guys now have to make the plays. They have to have presence in the huddle and make sure they get the call correct, make sure they change the play correctly, that they’re signaling and receiving signals and understanding them the right way. So, progress. I’m probably going to use that word ad nauseam, but it’s the whole goal, and as long as we keep doing that and showing good attitude, it’s good.”
We still have no doubt that Beck will be the starting quarterback for the Hurricanes when the season opens, but these reps for the backup quarterbacks could be a blessing in disguise for this team in the event that Beck suffers an injury or simply young quarterbacks gaining much needed experience they can use if they take over the starting job in future seasons. Miami’s QB room looks like it’s in good shape again this year as we get closer to the season.

Cam Ward puts on a show at Miami Pro Day with Giants, rest of NFL watching: ‘All they need to see’

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — As he was going about his work on the field, Cam Ward did not have to sense that the eyes of those in the crowd were all fixed on him.
All 32 teams sent representatives to the Miami Pro Day, and that meant he knew his future employer was in the building.
“For sure,’’ Ward said Monday. “I’ve seen a couple of ’em. Hopefuls. It was a good crowd, for sure.’’
Count the Giants among those hopefuls, but so much of the talk and focus before, during and especially after this workout focused on another team.

Cam Ward’s final preparations for the 2025 NFL draft will reach its climax today.
The Miami Hurricanes quarterback was a Heisman Trophy finalist and consensus All-American in 2024. Pro days are critical for draft prospects who skip workouts at the combine. Ward is considered to be the top quarterback in this year’s draft and many believe he has a good chance of being the first player off the board next month.
Ward had a terrific season following his transfer to Miami. The quarterback played two seasons with Washington State before joining the Canes this past year. On top of a First-Team All-American nod and finishing fourth in the Heisman voting, he was named ACC Player of the Year and won the Davey O’Brien Award (nation’s top QB) in 2024.
He’s aiming to carry this tremendous momentum into the NFL and plenty of teams are keen to select him when the draft clock starts ticking on April 24.
Miami’s pro day is Ward’s opportunity to display to all 32 teams his talents on the gridiron.
USA TODAY Sports will provide the latest updates, highlights and more from Cam Ward’s pro day workout below. All times are Eastern.
