The chaos across the vote for Home speaker confirmed once more how our politics have devolved right into a circus wherein drama on Twitter and cable information is an even bigger precedence than getting issues accomplished. The way forward for the Republican Social gathering and our nation doesn’t must be this fashion.

In 2014 I used to be a populist outsider businessman fed up with the profession politicians in Annapolis who had raised taxes 40 instances in eight years and run the state’s financial system right into a ditch. I used to be elected by the identical voters who would help Donald Trump: working-class and suburban women and men who have been understandably disillusioned with our political management. Like me, they’d had sufficient and have been demanding change.

I go away workplace Wednesday having achieved what my administration got down to do eight years in the past. Maryland has seen one of many best financial turnarounds within the U.S., because of our slicing taxes by almost $4.7 billion and turning a $5.1 billion structural finances deficit right into a report $5.5 billion in reserves. The coalition supporting our effort grew remarkably, with almost 70% of each demographic—together with Republicans, Democrats and independents—approving of the job we’ve accomplished.

It’s nonetheless attainable to steer and produce folks collectively on this hyperpolarized surroundings, and my expertise in Maryland affords key classes:

Persuasion begins with respect. In my first inaugural deal with, I stated Maryland’s “tradition of tolerance and mutual respect should additionally lengthen to these with whom we occur to vary on politics.” At each flip, we’ve tried to take care of that very same spirit. As our nation has turn out to be extra tribal, too many have purchased into the false notion that persuading voters on the opposite facet is a waste of time. Our legislators have regrettably substituted demonization for sincere debate.

Commonsense values nonetheless unite. Whereas the media and politicians pander to ideological activists, most People share common sense values. They don’t need to defund the police or spend our nation into oblivion. They need secure streets, a powerful financial system and peace via energy.

Authenticity transcends social gathering and beliefs. Marylanders typically inform me: “I don’t agree with you on each problem, however I recognize that you simply at all times say precisely what you assume.” Voters don’t know who to belief. They’re sick of phony politicians who faux to be one thing they aren’t. However People gained’t punish you for being human. After I was identified with most cancers in 2015, I didn’t cover my vulnerabilities and I used to be blessed that Marylanders of all stripes rallied behind me all through that battle.

Combat to win, not for present. Democrats managed a veto-proof majority in each legislative chambers throughout my tenure. That they had the votes to dam our total agenda, however we nonetheless delivered on our guarantees as a result of we selected our battles correctly, took stands on the problems that actually mattered to voters, and appealed on to Marylanders for help. That wouldn’t have occurred if we have been distracted by feckless fights on each problem. Preventing for the sake of preventing solely creates chaos and division.

As I go away workplace, I’ve by no means been extra involved that our divisions are weakening America. However I’ve by no means been extra assured in our capability to beat them. My expertise in Maryland proves that there’s extra that unites us than divides us. However poisonous performative politics gained’t restore America. Solely actual management with a report of outcomes will do this.

Mr. Hogan, a Republican, is governor of Maryland.

‘There’s no justice’: Maryland family wants answers in 2024 Shaw murder

A Maryland family is desperately searching for answers after their son was shot and killed in the Shaw neighborhood last year. The case has still never been solved.

The family says police told them their son was likely defending a friend from robbers.

Vaughn Dozier Jr., 21, from Upper Marlboro was a passionate DJ and a talented roller skater. His dad fondly recalled how his friends called him the GOAT of making music.

In June of 2024, he had gone to hang out with a friend in D.C.

“He was like, ‘Dad, I’m going to the skating rink.’ And I said, ‘Alright, Vaughn, I love you.’ That’s my thing. ‘I love you too.’ And that’s the last time I talked to my son,” Vaughn Dozier Sr. said.

Later that night, the family would receive a call from Vaughn Dozier Jr.’s friend, saying he’d been shot in the Shaw neighborhood.

His father rushed to the scene.

“Yellow tape, not looking good. I’m just hoping, alright, I see the ambulance, hope they’re working on him, hope there’s a chance,” his father said.

Vaughn Dozier Jr. would later be pronounced dead.

His father says police told them he was likely defending his friend from three robbers when one of the robbers shot him in the chest.

D.C. police told News4 the investigation is still ongoing, but they wouldn’t share any updates on the case.

Last year, several neighbors told News4 they were tired of crime in the area.

“I’m really concerned about safety because it’s not secure,” said neighbor Ana Romualdo. “It’s very often we see that there is assault.”

“Just really sad,” said another neighbor who didn’t want to give their name. “Sometimes it seems just too reckless and too dangerous.”

Vaughn Dozier Jr.’s father said he won’t rest until the killer is caught.

“I need to see their face. I need to look them in the eyes. So does my wife and my family,” Vaughn Dozier Sr. said. “There’s no justice if the person’s not here. We want to bring that person to justice.”
