No. 12 Maryland women’s lacrosse handled by No. 2 Northwestern, 13-6

Down 9-5 heading into the fourth quarter, No. 12 Maryland girls’s lacrosse desperately wanted a spark of vitality to gasoline a comeback in opposition to the No. 2 Northwestern Wildcats.

Nevertheless, the offense stalled, solely posting one shot to the Wildcats’ 11 within the body, and Northwestern ran away, profitable the match, 13-6. The victory gave it the No. 1 seed within the upcoming Huge Ten Event.

After an early draw management win, the Wildcats wasted no time in attacking the cage. Receiving the ball on the high of the 12-meter fan, sensational attacker Izzy Scane blew previous Maryland defender Abby Bosco for a fast left-handed end.

Regardless of midfielder Shaylan Ahearn profitable the following draw management outright, there was no room to work with, and the offense turned the ball over fairly shortly. The subsequent offensive possession was extra profitable, leading to two photographs on web, however nonetheless no rating.

In the meantime, Northwestern had no early points on the offensive aspect, scoring 3 times in its first 4 photographs. Its ball motion was fast, and attackers had been reducing too shortly for the Maryland defenders to react.

Earlier than lengthy, nevertheless, Maryland discovered its offensive groove. The Eloise Clevenger-to-Libby Could connection struck to place Maryland on the board. With Clevenger’s acumen as a distributor and Could’s knack for net-front quick-release scores, they made it look fairly simple.

Maryland goaltender Emily Sterling made some key stops within the first body, shutting down Northwestern on a couple of point-blank photographs in addition to a free-position alternative.

Twice Maryland went a girl up, and it capitalized on the latter of the 2 alternatives. Ahearn was capable of spot up in the course of the Northwestern zone and produce the Terps to inside one.

Following a last-second Northwestern free-position rating, the Wildcats led 4-2 after the primary body.

The second quarter commenced with an Ahearn draw management and subsequent rating. Attacker Chrissy Thomas had the good feed from the wing, and minutes later netted certainly one of her personal.

The Terps slowly grew to become extra comfy on the defensive aspect of the ball, sticking to their coverages and never permitting attackers like Scane to simply penetrate the alley. Sterling continued to impress, making big stops at essential moments, together with on a woman-down state of affairs to present Maryland possession.

Northwestern goaltender Molly Laliberty had some nice sequences as properly, together with a superb diving save whereas being a girl up.

Throughout the second interval, each packages traded empty possessions, even on woman-up alternatives. Northwestern was even bottled as much as the purpose the place it dedicated a couple of shot-clock violations.

It was the primary time up to now two seasons that Northwestern was shut out in 1 / 4 of play. The rating after two frames was 4-4, with Maryland carrying the momentum into the second half.

“We had been very disciplined and we labored as a unit,” Ahearn stated. “We had been speaking, communication was actually excessive and all of us had one another’s backs.”

The third quarter began off with a fourth yellow card by Northwestern. Nevertheless, after a Laliberty save, the Wildcats had been capable of waste away a bulk of the time whereas a girl down. Quickly after, an excellent cross-crease move put Elle Hansen in an ideal place to present the Wildcats a 5-4 lead.

Minutes later, the highest contender for Huge Ten Freshman of the 12 months, Madison Taylor, added on to the scoring for the Wildcats. Northwestern was victorious on the primary three draw controls of the body, giving them way more alternatives to transform on offense.

About seven minutes into the quarter, Maryland scored its first aim because the early portion of the second body; Clevenger was the beneficiary. Shortly after, Taylor earned herself a hat trick, discovering a smooth spot after a Northwestern attacker was doubled on the 12-meter fan.

Within the third body, Northwestern’s high assault of Coykendall, Scane and Hailey Rhatigan started to take form. Because the ball continued to maneuver round with tempo, Maryland’s protection grew to become noticeably drained. Consequently, it gave the Wildcats fairly a couple of free-position alternatives.

After Northwestern’s run, Maryland trailed 9-5 after three frames.

“I must do a greater job of getting our offense prepared, as a result of I missed the mark on that,” head coach Cathy Reese stated. “We weren’t capable of execute our recreation plan offensively.”

The Wildcats scored throughout the first minute-and-a-half of the fourth body, extending their result in 5 targets. Laliberty continued her sensational play, taking management of almost all of Maryland’s photographs. Consequently, Northwestern was capable of comfortably waste away a good chunk of time.

Maryland made a couple of uncharacteristic turnovers within the body, even giving the ball away on a transparent try. The Terps have been the No. 1 clearing group within the nation this season.

“I believe that all of us have an excellent head on our shoulders,” Ahearn stated. “We’ve the chance for an entire new week of lacrosse.”

Three issues to know

1. Second-quarter defensive battle. Within the second body, after two early scores by Maryland, each offenses went silent. It was a mix of turnovers, superb goaltending and tightly-contested protection that made for an entertaining sequence.

Within the interval, Maryland had seven photographs to Northwestern’s six. As well as, the Wildcats had three turnovers. Each goalies shined, as Sterling made three saves within the body whereas Laliberty had 5. For the sport, Sterling ended with 13 saves, and Laliberty had 8.

“We held them all through the sport fairly considerably,” Reese stated. “I believe there’s some positives to take from that. Emily [Sterling] had an excellent recreation too.”

2. Third-quarter points. The rating went from 4-4 at halftime to 9-5 after the conclusion of the third body. So, what led to this monumental run by Northwestern?

It began with draw controls. The Wildcats gained 5 draw controls to the Terps’ two. It allowed their trio of star attackers to get into rhythm, which drained out the Maryland defenders.

Within the quarter, the Terps gave up two free-position scores and turned the ball over 4 instances. Regardless of choosing up 5 floor balls, Maryland was unable to transform them into any kind of offensive manufacturing.

“We had been on protection for lots of the sport and Northwestern is a group that generates a whole lot of photographs,” Reese stated. “We both turned the ball over in transition after making huge stops, or we simply couldn’t get the ball into our offensive finish to do what we wanted to do.”

3. A recreation of fouls. The free-position shot totals for each packages wasn’t all that shocking, because the Terps had 4 alternatives from the arc to to the Wildcats’ seven. Nevertheless, Maryland had 20 whole fouls with three playing cards, and Northwestern amassed 21 fouls with 5 playing cards of its personal.

Even with the variety of woman-up alternatives that the Terps discovered themselves in, they couldn’t capitalize on nearly all of them. With extra bodily play current in opposition to top-flight opponents, Maryland might want to study to regulate its offense accordingly.

Maryland issues a new suicide prevention action plan for schools, families – WTOP News

Suicide is the third leading cause of death for young people between the ages of 10 and 24 in Maryland. That’s according to a new suicide prevention action plan produced through the state’s Department of Health.

Suicide is the third leading cause of death for young people between the ages of 10 and 24 in Maryland. That’s according to a new suicide prevention action plan produced through the state’s Department of Health.

Scott Poland, the director of the Office of Suicide and Violence Prevention at Nova Southeastern University College of Psychology, talked to WTOP about the action plan he authored with his wife, Donna, who is a career educator.

The “Maryland Action Plan to Prevent Suicide in K-12 Schools” serves as a reference guide to school administrators and the community, and was developed in cooperation with the state health department’s Office of Suicide Prevention.

Poland said one thing that surprises people is that children as young as 8 years old may consider taking their own lives.

“I hear from school personnel all around the country (asking if they) have to take it seriously (if a fourth or fifth grader is talking about suicide). And the answer is absolutely yes,” Poland said.

Among the data points in the action plan is a survey of students in the “Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey of 2021/2022.” According to that survey, 21% of high school students “seriously considered suicide” in the past year, and 27% of middle schoolers considered suicide at some point in their lives.

Poland said it’s important to talk about suicide with young people, and that the idea that talking about it might encourage a young person to consider suicide is a “myth.”

“When we actually bring it up, it gives someone a chance to unburden themselves, to realize that they’re not alone, that there are alternatives and that there is help available,” Poland said.

But he said young people are most susceptible to imitating suicidal behavior: “It is important that we not glorify the suicide victim.”

Instead, Poland said, the emphasis after a suicide should be on healing those affected and helping them find appropriate ways to deal with their emotions and mental health.

The plan released this week includes providing intervention action plans for a young person who may be considering suicide.

“Part of that, of course, is removing lethal means and developing a written safety plan with them,” he said.

Poland said that can include helping people understand “the importance of calling 988, doing things that can calm themselves down,” and reaching out to the nearest trusted adult.

People can reach the national resource for crisis response services and suicide prevention by dialing 988.

Poland said social media is “wreaking havoc” on children’s emotional well-being, often making them feel “not smart enough, not rich enough, not good enough.” Poland said he’s currently working with the state of South Dakota on developing tools to help “young people be a little more mindful and make better decisions about their screen time.”

Poland said parents can help — when it comes to the hours and hours that many people spend online — by modeling healthy amounts of screen time themselves. And he said adults need to think about how they introduce technology to their kids.

“We’re in too (much of) a hurry to give kids smartphones and 24-hour internet access,” Poland said.

“I really have to compliment Maryland,” Poland said, on coming up with the new plan.

Poland said Maryland does not have an especially high rate of suicide, but “I think we all recognize that losing one young person to suicide is one too many.”
