Maryland weather: Nor’easter expected to bring rain to Baltimore area, possibly with snow mixed in

A “significant” winter storm is expected to pass through the mid-Atlantic states Monday and Tuesday before heading up to New England, though snow is expected to be limited in the Baltimore area.

The powerful storm, known as a nor’easter, is mostly anticipated to bring rain to Baltimore, possibly starting Monday afternoon and lasting through Tuesday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. Between a half and three-quarters of an inch of rain is expected to fall in the Baltimore area Monday night into early Tuesday morning, with a wintry mix possible Tuesday morning in some areas.

Despite the winter storm system, temperatures are predicted to remain above average for most of the region, with a high of 55 degrees expected Sunday in Baltimore, along with a chance of rain; a high of 51 degrees Monday; and 46 degrees Tuesday. Heavy snow is most likely to hit northern areas of Pennsylvania and southern New York before traveling to New England, where half a foot to a foot of snow is forecasted, according to the weather service.

Closer to Baltimore, areas of heavy rain can be predicted due to a lack of cold air traveling south from Canada — though the path of the storm is still unclear. Areas farther from the Chesapeake Bay are currently expected to get some snow, with the rainfall forecast to turn into a precipitation blend Tuesday morning in Hunt Valley and Westminster, and a slight chance of rain turning into snow near BWI Marshall Airport.

The remainder of the week after Tuesday is forecast to be dry until Saturday, when the weather service is predicting a chance of snow showers in Baltimore, with a 30% chance of precipitation.
