5 thoughts after the Dallas Mavericks stumble late against the Utah Jazz, 100-99

The Dallas Mavericks fell Saturday afternoon on the street to the Utah Jazz, 100-99. Donovan Mitchell led the Jazz with 23 factors. Luka Doncic was the excessive level man for Dallas with 30.

With Luka Doncic returning to the beginning line up after injuring his left calf within the ultimate recreation of the common season, the Dallas Mavericks jumped out to a quick 8-1 lead. Each groups settled right into a well being flurry of bricks, although Utah managed to climb again inside a single rating late within the quarter. Maxi Kleber picked up three fouls within the quarter, which might have an effect on the Dallas protection as the sport moved alongside. The Jazz briefly took a one level lead however Rudy Gobert picked up a technical foul arguing a foul name and Dallas retook the lead on free throws. A Jordan Clarkson three gave Utah a 24-23 lead after one interval.

Utah continued to assault Dallas and the offensive struggles of Spencer Dinwiddie resulted within the Jazz extending their result in seven within the first 4 minutes of the quarter. Dallas went very small with Dorian Finney-Smith on the 5 because of foul bother, but it surely didn’t matter on offense with the Mavericks unable to hit a lot of something. Utah inched forward because the body wore on and Maxi Kleber picked up his fourth foul on a rebounding scenario. However, regardless of falling behind by as many as 16 and taking pictures simply 32% from the ground, the Mavericks trailed on the half by solely 12 factors. Utah took a 54-42 lead into halftime.

Offense was the order of the day for each groups to start out the third quarter. Dallas roared all the best way again inside two within the first three minutes of the quarter on spectacular three level taking pictures from anybody taking an try. After a Jazz timeout, they regrouped and pushed the lead again as much as eight. However with Luka Doncic going again to the bench, Jalen Brunson and Dorian Finney-Smith got here to life and led a cost to retake the Dallas lead. The Mavericks held Utah off to shut out the quarter and entered the ultimate body up 81-78.

After an incandescent third quarter, neither workforce may rating within the opening half of the fourth. Then it delved right into a possession by possession recreation, with repeated stoppages as every workforce scored by free throws and tv timeouts. With the sport tied at 90 with round 4 minutes left, Dallas repeatedly went to Luka Doncic and it didn’t repay. The stoppages in play continued with a reviewed scrum following one other Gobert offensive rebound and Dwight Powell gave Dallas the lead again on free throws following the leap ball. Donovan Mitchell would reply with a drive however Doncic answered proper again with a lay in. Doncic hit a step again three to offer Dallas a 4 level lead with forty seconds left, however a Donovan Mitchell responded with an and-one. Powell missed each free throws on an intentional foul after which Gobert completed a dunk from Mitchell. Dallas fell 100-99 because the collection heads again to Dallas tied 2-2

Now, some ideas

An excessive amount of Luka Doncic down the stretch

When you watched this recreation like I did (in a straightjacket) you might need been screaming at Doncic down the stretch when he attacked Rudy Gobert and took tough pictures when he may’ve handed. And sure, he did hit an enormous three to offer Dallas a 4 level lead, however he additionally fouled Mitchell on an and one to offer the lead proper again. We’re all enormous Doncic followers right here, however he tried to do an excessive amount of and it value Dallas in an enormous approach.

Maxi Kleber’s fouls modified the sport and the rotation

The three dangerous fouls Kleber picked up within the first quarter resulted in so many downhill issues it’s exhausting to know the place to start out. For one, it meant extra Dwight Powell who performed 24 minutes. He would possibly’ve performed extra anyway with Doncic again, however Powell bought labored on rebounds and protection regardless of how exhausting he tried.

Kleber has to play smarter and higher, he’s too vital to the workforce.

Spencer Dinwiddie has to do one thing when he’s on the ground

Whereas this merely is probably not the collection for Dinwiddie, his ineffective play for enormous stretches of this collection just isn’t ok. He’s forcing pictures when he ought to go, surveying the court docket when he must assault, and enjoying actually unaware protection. I want there was extra to say, however taking pictures 20-of-63 for the collection stinks. He’s bought to do one thing whereas he’s on the ground as his minutes value the Mavericks the sport in a really tangible approach (minus-14 in his 24 minutes in Sport 4).

The refereeing must be higher

I’m not a refs man, it’s a boring grievance. The Mavericks dedicated a ton of fouls, there’s no query there. However this was a recreation the place the bodily contact allowed was strongly in favor of the Jazz. Bojan Bogdanovic most likely ought to’ve fouled out twice over with the quantity of contact he was meting out. It occurs, after all, it’s a street playoff recreation, however the 42-23 free throw disparity partially tells that story.

Maintaining Rudy Gobert off the glass

That is straight associated to the Maxi Kleber fouls, however Gobert getting 10 offensive rebounds is one other ingredient which value the Mavericks the sport. Group rebounding has to do the job and in opposition to the Jazz, it didn’t.

Cowboys vs Giants on Thanksgiving: Dallas is favored after weeks as underdog

The Dallas Cowboys got back in the win column with a surprising upset over the Washington Commanders. Surprising in the fact that Dallas won, and surprising in that it was one of the crazier games seen in a while. The fourth-quarter alone was worth the price of admission.

The Cowboys were able to get their win even though they were roughly 10.5-point underdogs going into the game. Dallas has been the underdog for a while now, but this week they are favored. With their rivals in the NFC East, the New York Giants, coming to town on turkey day, Dallas finds themselves as 3.5-point favorites in the FanDuel odds.

The Giants appear to be falling apart after cutting QB Daniel Jones, getting rocked by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 30-7, then having multiple players calling the team’s effort ‘soft’ and questioning the game plan.

Could the Cowboys actually go on a winning streak? And how does this sit with a fanbase firmly looking toward draft position?

CeeDee Lamb made NFL history on Sunday

During the first quarter on Sunday afternoon against the Washington Commanders, Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb set an impressive bit of NFL history.

By recording his fourth reception in the game (CeeDee got a lot of work early if that is not obvious) Lamb recorded four receptions for the 44th consecutive game. That is the longest streak in NFL history, according to the Cowboys’ public relations team.

Lamb surpassed former New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas to set the record all to himself. The impressive thing about a streak like this is that it crosses over multiple seasons and in CeeDee’s case even multiple quarterbacks.

Obviously this season has been a bit tough for the Cowboys, but seeing CeeDee continually perform is a bright spot throughout it all. Kudos and congratulations to him, hopefully there is a lot more history on the way for him and the team in sunnier days.

Dallas police pension won big against the city, but there is still room for agreement

Dallas police pension won big against the city, but there is still room for agreement

In August, when the Dallas Police and Fire Pension System filed a lawsuit against City Hall, we winced in concern.

The difference boiled down to which entity, the city or the pension board, had the authority to send a plan to the Texas Legislature to get the badly underfunded system back on track.

Well, the pension system won that fight in district court in Travis County. The plan it has crafted would offer substantially more funding to the pension system, with cost-of-living increases and a reduction in employee contributions in later years.

The city could drag this through an appeal, but as things stand, the pension system’s plan would become the required funding formula.

Get smart opinions on the topics North Texans care about.

Most readers know the pension system is underfunded by more than $3 billion. The difference here boils down to how much additional money the city will contribute per year to get us back on track. Under the pension system’s plan, it would be millions more per year.

But this is a wholly negotiable matter. Two sides have different figures in mind. The sides need to hash out those differences in a way that ensures the city is aligned with a 2017 state law that was passed for the express purpose of getting this pension funded.

There are serious people on both sides. What we need now is a leader at City Hall who has the standing to get this done. Normally, that would be the mayor, but our mayor hasn’t been doing the hard work at City Hall for a long time and we don’t expect him to start now. It could be the city manager, but that job is in the hands of an interim manager now.

Mayor Pro Tem Tennell Atkins has been doing the heavy lifting for the city, but whether he can lead the city’s side in negotiations is unclear.

All we know is that there is an opportunity for a solution that gets this thing out of court and a solid plan to the Legislature that, yes, includes sacrifices but that also stops the drumbeat about this important public benefit.

Someone needs to get on the phone, book a conference room, order some takeout and work the spreadsheets. There is time, but the clock is ticking.
