Could historic Augusta school become new senior living apartments?

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Plans are underway for an affordable senior living apartment complex in the Sand Hills neighborhood.
The site is the historic Weed School on Mount Auburn Street.
The Housing and Community Development purchased the decommissioned elementary school for Black children earlier this year.
The Housing and Community Development wants commissioners to approve a $960,000 loan through the American Rescue Plan to construct the 48-unit complex on Tuesday.
The development is being named E.W. Estates in honor of Reverend Edvin G. Weed.
He was the first rector of the Church Of The Good Shepard and planted the seed that sprang the school, which bears his name.
The same developers of Watson Pointe and the Lenox are named on the project.
In Feb. 2024, community members said they’re tired of seeing weeds grow at the old Weed School.
Some ideas for the space included a grocery store, library, shopping plaza, health center or a mixed-use space.
“A lot of times we forget that we have children out here that really, really need help. And I think that we have to understand that it needs to be a quality of life for our children, an upgrade because people keep saying, Oh, it’s getting worse, it’s getting worse. But what are we doing? Where are we going with this? And I think that’s one question that we need to ask, what is this building? And how could it be a benefit to the community,” said Christopher Mulliens, a community activist.
