Midtown Atlanta residents alarmed by surge in pedestrian hit-and-runs at rainbow crosswalks
Brutal hit and run caught on camera
Atlanta police have identified a hit and run driver and cited her for the accident. Investigators say a car plowed into Vernon Thomas on Monday afternoon at Atlanta’s Rainbow Crossing at 10th Street and Piedmont Avenue in Midtown. Amazingly, his injuries were not life threatening.
ATLANTA – Midtown neighborhood residents are concerned over an increase in pedestrians being struck while crossing Atlanta’s iconic rainbow crosswalks.
It was the second hit-and-run crash caught on camera at the intersection of 10th Street and Piedmont Avenue.

What we know:
On Monday, just after 2:45 p.m., witnesses spotted a light-colored car strike a man sending his body soaring in the air.
That man was identified as Vernon Thomas.
Miraculously, Thomas survived and continued to recover at Grady Memorial Hospital as of Thursday afternoon.
The driver, identified as Jasmine Nettles, has been cited for leaving the scene of the accident, according to police.

Witness Akil Jules, who watched the crash unfold from his car on Piedmont Avenue, described the moment as horrifying. “All I see is like, a car speeding off, and someone landing on the floor,” Jules recalled. “I was in the car at that point and they just weren’t moving, and people were checking on them and he was on the floor. I thought he was gone.”
Jules, a software engineer, said the severity of the crash was unlike anything he’s seen before on Atlanta roads. “I know Atlanta drivers are bad, but that was the worst I’ve ever seen in my life,” he said. “That was a pretty rough hit. I am just hoping he can make a full recovery from that.”
The backstory:
The incident comes just two weeks after another pedestrian, Ashley Drumm, was also struck by a vehicle near the same area and remains hospitalized with serious injuries.
Drumm is still recovering after breaking both femurs and fracturing her skull, among other injuries.
Both crashes have renewed concerns about pedestrian safety in Midtown, an area known for heavy foot traffic and busy intersections.

Atlanta police say the investigations are ongoing.

Young is averaging 24.1 points and 11.4 assists for the Hawks. Georges Niang is averaging 2.7 made 3-pointers over the last 10 games.

Heading into the Saturday night matchup against the Golden State Warriors, Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young was on the injury report.
As expected, Young’s presence on the report was precautionary. He ended up getting cleared to play and checked in for 35 minutes against the Warriors.
Young and the Hawks upset the Warriors with a 124-115 victory. The star guard accounted for 25 points on 60 percent shooting from the field. He dished out 10 assists and came down with five rebounds throughout the night.
Going into the Sunday night matchup against the Sixers, Young is in a similar position. The Hawks have kept him on the injury report for the second matchup in a row.

This season, Young has missed just a handful of games. When the Sixers faced the Atlanta Hawks back on March 10, that game ended up being his latest absence. The Hawks gave Young the night off, and Atlanta still found success against a struggling Sixers team.
Going into Sunday’s matchup, the Hawks have put together a two-game winning streak. They’ve won seven of their 10 games during March. Currently, the Hawks are looking to maintain their position as the top Play-In seed and could potentially work their way into a top-six seed.
As for the Sixers, they are seeded 12th in the Eastern Conference before the Hawks matchup. With a 23-47 record, the Sixers have been bouncing back and forth with the Brooklyn Nets. A loss against Atlanta on Sunday would send them back down to 13th with their fourth-straight defeat.

CINCINNATI — – Evander scored twice for Cincinnati and Atlanta benefited from the opposition’s own goal as the teams played to a 2-2 draw on Saturday.
Emmanuel Latte Lath, Atlanta’s leading goal scorer, provided a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute, a left-footed first-time strike into the left side of the goal. It was his fourth goal of the young MLS season.
Cincinnati leveled the score at 1 in the 69th minute when Evander scored off of a free kick. Atlanta’s Brad Guzan dove to his right to stop Evander’s shot, but a harsh deflection off of the wall angled the ball into the net. Just five minutes later, Evander made it 2-1 when he delivered one into the right side of the goal.
Atlanta got the equalizer when Cincinnati’s Alvas Powell misplayed a ball that ended up as an own goal in the 88th minute.
Cincinnati (2-2-1) had seven shots on goal to two for Atlanta (1-2-2).
The draw keeps Cincinnati undefeated at home in MLS play although FC Cincinnati had been seeking to start 3-0-0 at home for the second time in three seasons.
