Something Nick Saban Said in Appearance with Razorbacks’ Sam Pittman Makes Sense

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – On the finish of final week, we reported on an look by Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman on the Alabama Soccer Coaches Affiliation conference in Montgomery the place, based on these current, Pittman stole the present.

Nevertheless, whereas Pittman was apparently the person of the hour regardless of being sandwiched in a primetime slot on opening night time between Alabama’s Nick Saban and Georgia’s Kirby Good, it was a remark made by Saban throughout a query and reply session that set the web on hearth.

Whereas discussing the impression of NIL, Saban reportedly mentioned {that a} request was made on behalf of a cornerback recruit for $800,000 and {that a} participant from his workforce wished $500,000 and admittance into Alabama’s regulation college.

The 2 gamers in query have been supposedly informed they need to discover someplace else to play. Contemplating Saban’s open disdain for a way NIL has advanced, it most likely wasn’t the wisest of strikes by the athletes concerned.

Whether or not this matter was a part of the dialogue taking putting throughout the now well-known picture of Saban and Pittman speaking within the ballroom of the Embassy lodge the place the conference was happening is a query for Pittman throughout his winter press convention.

One factor coaches reported Saban saying makes excellent sense. He’s apparently strongly towards gamers receiving cash earlier than they even take the sector.

That is the place Saban is correct and possibly has a rising set of allies inside the College of Arkansas athletics program. Overenthusiastic boosters at universities throughout the nation get so enthusiastic about attempting to lure a child with a bunch of stars beside his or her title that they pledge a pile of cash for an unproven commodity.

The worth of an athlete relies on what is completed on the sector or court docket whereas representing the model. If a participant cannot get within the sport, then it is like paying high greenback for an 80-foot tall billboard hidden behind a thicket of 100-foot bushes.

The present system permits for guys who’re all hype and no chunk to come back in, rack up a ton of cash, and contribute subsequent to nothing.

The issue of some huge cash for no return has just a few guard rails in soccer and baseball as a result of the period of time required to be in faculty forces gamers to show themselves.

Nevertheless, investing NIL cash into basketball is the largest danger of all. If somebody is foolhardy sufficient at hand an 18-year-old an enormous examine up entrance with out correct necessities written into the settlement that may contractually require parts of that cash be paid again for missed appearances and incapability to characterize the entity’s model by being on the court docket, the younger man may merely pocket the cash and by no means step on the court docket for that college.

Simply present up lengthy sufficient for the checks to clear, announce a purpose to now not be with the workforce reminiscent of an intention to switch, and dance off to the NBA draft with a hefty checking account that would not have been crammed had it been just a few seasons earlier than when NIL wasn’t a factor.

They NBA is not going to carry it towards them. They know the way to write their contracts accurately.

If something, they could be impressed {that a} younger man proper out of highschool outsmarted grown adults who ought to have identified higher.

Finally firms and collectives will turn out to be as soured as Saban on the concept of throwing cash at an unproven commodity. NIL contracts shall be written higher so efficiency comes earlier than fee and accountability is required.

Figuring out that the state of Arkansas does not have as a lot cash to mess around with and is not sometimes as tolerable of paychecks that are not earned, it is probably that it turns into a proving floor for NIL offers primarily based totally on incentives earlier than many different states.

So many appearances or spots set off a sure sum of money. Beginning a certain quantity of video games or enjoying so many minutes triggers extra money.

Representing the model as an All-SEC participant or an All-American triggers extra funds, as does a loyalty bonus. There may even be character bonuses for staying out of bother, avoiding sure penalties and preserving issues constructive on social media.

All win-win ideas that assist the corporate’s model, the athlete’s model and the workforce for which she or he performs.

The issue with NIL for coaches like Saban and Pittman does not seem like the cash. They simply wish to see the cash be earned and never get in the best way of the product on the sector.

No coach desires to have a man on the sideline for 2 years who cannot get off the bench for varied causes making a ton of cash whereas the fellows who’re there killing themselves daily and really enjoying within the video games come away with far much less.

That will get underneath the pores and skin of most coaches and creates issues within the locker room.

They positively do not take kindly to gamers having their individuals contact the coach and primarily attempt to extort them.

It is one factor to come back to a coach and say “Hey, my mother’s having a tough time paying lease,” or “I am having a tough time preserving tires on my automobile, have you learnt somebody who may can level me to a enterprise that might use my promotional providers so I can deal with that?”

It is a a lot completely different matter to inform a coach he’d higher provide you with “X” quantity of {dollars} or you are going to a rival.

There’s change that should occur on this system.

That begins with putting worth on what the athlete brings to the corporate or group, not whether or not his or her foot bodily steps onto a campus.

Arkansas becomes bowl eligible with win over Louisiana Tech

FAYETTEVILLE — The Arkansas Razorbacks (6-5, 3-4 SEC) secured bowl eligibility with a 35-14 win over the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (4-7, 3-4 CUSA) on Saturday at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium.

The Razorback offense struggled in the first half and only scored 14 points before the two teams went to the locker rooms at halftime. Quarterback Taylen Green threw an interception, wide receiver Andrew Armstrong fumbled and the Hogs punted three times in the first two quarters.

Outside of the fumble, Armstrong had a strong game that put him into the Arkansas record books. With his eight reception, 81-yard game, he became the fifth player in school history to reach 1,000 receiving yards in a single season. Armstrong also took sole position of second place in school history for single-season receptions with 69 on the season.

Arkansas’ offense fared somewhat better in the second half with a touchdown pass to wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa — his second of the day — an eight-yard touchdown run by Green and a 13-yard score on the ground by running back Ja’Quinden Jackson. It wasn’t much, but it was all the Hogs needed to get the win.

For the game, Arkansas gained 454 yards, 221 through the air and 233 on the ground. Running back Rashod Dubinion got the start and was the Razorbacks’ leading rusher with 112 yards on 15 carries.

Ill-timed penalties plagued the Hogs several times in the game, the biggest was a holding penalty wiped out a kickoff return for a touchdown on the opening kick. A roughing the passer call took away an interception late in the third quarter; Arkansas committed eight penalties for 78 yards throughout the game.

The Arkansas defense had another strong performance and held the Bulldogs to just 229 yards in the game, 190 through the air and 39 on the ground. They did give up two touchdowns, but it’s worth noting a muffed punt by Isaiah Sategna put Louisiana Tech in plus territory, which led to the first touchdown. The second touchdown came with just under six minutes to go, a 20-yard pass to wide receiver Jimmy Holliday on 3rd and 17.

The win will send the Razorbacks to a bowl game for the fourth time in the last five seasons, and they will turn their sights to a rivalry matchup with Missouri next Friday. Check out some of the highlights from the game below…
