How An Alabama Dairy Owner Created IndyCar’s Augusta National
With over 800,000 bulbs planted within the floor, 16,000 Crape Myrtles and 18,000 Azaleas, Barber Motorsports Park is exploding with springtime shade. It’s a setting so serene and so naturally stunning, it has earned the fame because the “August Nationwide of Motorsports.”
This weekend’s Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama is the NTT IndyCar Sequence’ annual journey to the Deep South. It has been an prompt hit for the reason that first time IndyCar competed right here on August 11, 2010.
The annual Indianapolis 500 on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Memorial Day Weekend could also be IndyCar’s model of “The Masters” however Barber Motorsports Park is actually its Augusta Nationwide.
Sunday’s race on the 2.3-mile, 17-turn highway course in Leeds, Alabama, simply exterior of Birmingham, has develop into some of the fashionable, and most profitable, races on the IndyCar schedule. Sunday’s Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama was introduced as a sellout, one week in the past.
With the entire land out there to witness a race on the facility, how does a highway course promote out?
When George Barber created this magnificent racing facility, he needed his spectators to have a premium expertise. It was extra necessary to him to host 30,000 or 40,000 spectators per day in snug environment, than it was to jam them into the ability.
It’s high quality, not amount, that has at all times been necessary to the 82-year-old former proprietor of Barber Pure Milk Dai

In an unique interview with Barber on April 27, he advised me how an Alabama dairy proprietor created the Augusta Nationwide of Motorsports.
“I don’t wish to put you in a stand the place you might be elbow to elbow with someone for a pair hours,” Barber defined. “That simply doesn’t work. I wish to sit you on a financial institution with a shade tree and your beer cooler after which get uninterested in trying on the race from that time and get on the tram and go to the subsequent nook.
“I would like you to be free to maneuver across the park itself, which is straightforward to do with the tram and go from spot to identify. Individuals love to try this and get completely different angles of the race observe.
“A premium expertise is extra helpful than seeing how many individuals we are able to get in right here at one time. I believe that’s what we’ve got performed, too. To have the ability to transfer round, go from place to position, then go into the paddock see all of that, see the motive force’s up shut. Simply be happy to maneuver round has made a hell of a distinction.”
Solely 35 Miles Aside, However Worlds Away
The irony of Barber Motorsports Park’s success is it’s positioned simply 35 miles west of Nascar’s iconic Talladega Superspeedway, the place inventory vehicles race in insane packs at excessive speeds in races that normally finish in mayhem.
Against this, the IndyCar race at Barber Motorsports Park showcase the great thing about unique racing vehicles competing on a difficult highway course with tight turns, high-speed corners, and elevation adjustments.
“Nascar was final weekend,” Barber stated. “Our’s is that this weekend and it’s offered out. Sunday is offered out.
“We work collectively and are pals with Nascar. It’s not suited to this observe, however we’re pals with the parents at Talladega and at Nascar.”
Barber takes satisfaction in his facility, which additionally options the biggest motorbike assortment and largest Lotus race automobile assortment on this planet on the Barber Classic Motorsports Museum.
Scenic Magnificence and Greatest Conduct
Lovely foliage and fascinating paintings adorn this facility. That helps set it aside from different racing services.
“That’s simply my nature,” Barber stated. “I wish to do it proper and make it as stunning as I can. Persons are shocked to see an exquisite park that occurs to have a race observe in it, not a race observe that’s mounted. You’ve seen lots of them. They’re rubbish pits.
“Our restrooms are spotless. They’re going to be spotless. They’re clear.”
Barber expects clear habits from his company, as effectively. Alcohol is served at Barber and company are allowed to herald coolers, however they’re additionally anticipated to behave.
This isn’t Indy’s notorious “Snake Pit” of the Fifties by way of the Nineties, when drunken debauchery was not solely tolerated, however really inspired.
“Should you misbehave, you might be historical past,” Barber stated. “You might be out of the park. We don’t put up with any foolishness.
“Whenever you take your children, you have got different households there and it’s a very good healthful ambiance. I will be damned if I’ll have a bunch of drunks round a bunch of households and youngsters which can be having enjoyable and having fun with the day. Should you misbehave slightly bit, you might be historical past.”
From Milkman to Museum Curator
So, how did a person who made his fortune within the household’s dairy create such an exquisite facility that has earned its place with some of the anticipated IndyCar weekends of the season?
His father began the dairy enterprise that processed and distributed milk all through Alabama because the Barber Pure Milk Firm.
“We didn’t personal a cow,” Barber recalled. “My Dad died in 1970 and I began operating the enterprise at the moment. We had nice individuals and was very lucky making successful of it. It was fairly a thrill.
“It was a hell of much more harmful than racing.
“I offered it to Dean Meals years in the past (1997). Now, Dean Meals is not in existence. They went bankrupt. It’s been a tragic decade for the dairy enterprise. I evidently acquired out on the proper time and was very lucky in doing so.”
Barber, who began racing when he was 10 or 11 years outdated and is happy with his 63 first-place trophies, had develop into a rich man with out a enterprise to handle after the sale.
He was additionally left with some classic dairy vehicles that he needed to revive and have in a museum in downtown Birmingham.
“We had slightly museum downtown the place we used to revive our milk vehicles,” Barber defined. “I stored in search of a spot large enough the place we may put a take a look at observe in. We lastly discovered one thing on the outskirts of Birmingham. It was 880 acres or so and I purchased that. We began enthusiastic about a race observe and a museum. We did that and one factor led to a different, and I spotted what little observe I used to be making an attempt to construct to check our restorations on was not going to get it. We actually wanted to do it proper the primary time.
“So, we did.
“We constructed the race observe and the subsequent 12 months we constructed the museum. That was in 2003.
“It got here pretty fast to me that there was no means in hell that you possibly can have the very best Chevy assortment and finest Ford assortment on this planet as a result of it’s already been performed. The man who was doing this for me was a bike fanatic and he stated, ‘let’s strive a bike or two.’ I agreed and we acquired slightly of this and slightly of that.
“Fairly quickly, I acquired fascinated with it since you may see the brakes, the suspension, the cylinder heads and the braking techniques the place a automobile, you solely noticed an exquisite set of hubcaps and a paint job. I actually acquired fascinated by that in as a lot as I did all of my very own work on my vehicles, and I liked the engineering and the tinkering. That’s how it began.”
On Monitor
Barber needed to have a take a look at observe for a few of the autos in his assortment. He enlisted a few of the biggest names in worldwide motorsports assist with the design.
“We stored fooling with the race course,” he stated. “I knew all I needed to do on the time was take a look at our restorations, however I believed in two- or three-year’s time we’re going to wish to increase it so let’s do this now. I acquired a man, Alan Wilson, to assist design. I’d ship the nook to Carroll Shelby or John Surtees or Dan Gurney and ask them what they thought. They advised me to open it up or do it this fashion or that means.
“Lots of people had a hand in creating this course. It was nice enjoyable doing it, getting an opportunity to speak to those guys and get their enter.”
The museum has 800 to 900 bikes on show and personal about 1,500. The 60 Lotus race vehicles make it the biggest assortment on this planet for that marque.
“We’ve needed to cling a few of the Components One vehicles out over the ground as a result of we’re operating out of room,” Barber stated. “It simply grew. A few of the extra fascinating bikes are those that John Surtees used to win the World Championship. He’s the one man alive to win the World Championship on two wheels and 4 wheels. We now have the Ferrari he received the championship with on 4 wheels and his bikes that he received the World Championships with on two. These are a few of the enjoyable issues we’ve acquired.
“It appears to be working now. We’ve acquired one bridge that crosses the race observe over a waterfall after which have a second bridge that overlooks your entire race course.
“It’s greater than a bike museum; it’s a whole expertise.”
Barber can’t place a worth on his motorbike assortment however admits its a few of the finest investments he has made in his life.
“A few of these issues have tripled and quadrupled in worth since I began. So far as a complete worth, I don’t know,” Barber stated. “It’s been quite a bit.”
For six years, Barber Motorsports Park featured a superb highway course, however it was principally used for motorbike races and some sports activities automobile meets right here and there together with the Porsche Faculty. Barber had larger concepts, nonetheless, and he contacted IndyCar.
In 2009, IndyCar beneath the supervision of its then President of Competitors Brian Barnhart, performed a feasibility take a look at at Barber Motorsports Park. It was so profitable, the observe was given a race for April 11, 2010.
Helio Castroneves received that inaugural IndyCar race and the competitors on the observe was much better than anticipated. It really featured extra racing than a few of the different highway and avenue programs on the schedule at the moment.
What made it so profitable?
“Simply Indy,” Barber stated succinctly. “Indy is so fabulous. To get them to the observe in Birmingham, Alabama was fabulous to me. One thing grew and we’ve got them. Should you speak to the drivers, they’ll say that is most likely certainly one of their finest tracks.
“It places on a few of the finest races of the 12 months.
“After we had guys like Gurney and Shelby and Surtees it and poking at it and adjusting it, I believed this was going to work. Then, we had been going to make it the most secure observe round with ample runoff and limitations. Then make it some of the stunning tracks.
“Persons are not going to return to Birmingham, Alabama to look at something that’s half-assed.”
By offering a premium facility, IndyCar delivered with an iconic occasion.
From Monkeys and Mountain Lions to Zombies and Martians — George’s Critters
However there’s something else that units Barber Motorsports Park aside from different racing services.
It’s “George’s Critters.”
Barber has created paintings of untamed animals, large spiders, Martians, and Zombies which can be all around the course. These embrace “Henry the monkey” who hangs from the billboard atop the scoring pylon. An enormous spider named “Charlotte” is in a collection of turns generally known as “Charlotte’s Net.”
A mountain lion has been moved from the scoreboard to the highest of the restrooms within the paddock.
“He acquired sunburned over there, so we moved him to the restrooms,” Barber stated.
What was the genesis of “George’s Critters?”
“After we first began this, we had been attacked viciously by the Cahaba River Society and people loopy environmentalists,” Barber defined. “I imply vicious. They might name us in the midst of the night time and lift hell. It was unbelievable what they had been doing to my individuals and me.
“So, I acquired the critters and the spiders and the assorted issues round and I known as within the press. I stated, ‘Take a look at this, my God, the spiders and the critters and the animals, they drank this water round right here and appeared what occurred to them. That is horrible.’
“Boy, they performed it up massive time they usually actually did us justice. The environmentalists noticed this, they usually backed off. We acquired our mojo again; we acquired our spirit again and we accomplished the challenge.
“Now, I take nice enjoyment of inviting the environmentalists out and ask them to indicate me the environmental catastrophe. They poo-poo flip away and stroll away.”
Barber Motorsports Park was a dream when George Barber was 60. At this time at 82, he enjoys the shrine that he has created and has created a robust bond with IndyCar.
“I believe they’re going to do effectively,” Barber stated of IndyCar. “They’ve some nice personalities and nice guys, no Prima Donnas on this group. They’re all very skilled and I’m delighted to have them on board.”

Alabama’s recent focus on defense pays off in blowout win over Kent State
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Nate Oats started his postgame press conference explaining why Alabama would have a much better winter break after its 81-54 win over Kent State. According to Oats, a happy holiday hinged on the Tide’s defensive performance against the Golden Flashes.
“Much better defensive effort so it’ll be a lot better Christmas break for us,” Oats said with a smile at the podium. “We did make a big point of emphasis on defense, especially after that debacle up in North Dakota with [Fighting Hawks guard Treysen Eaglestaff].”
It was far from a perfect offensive display for the Tide against Kent State. Alabama’s lingering turnover issues reared its ugly head for a second straight and the Tide continued shooting poorly from 3-point range.
However, after defensive letdowns nearly sprang an upset in Grand Forks, North Dakota, Alabama got back to the basics over the next few days at practice. The team worked on defensive fundamentals rather than solely focusing on film study.
That extra emphasis paid off as Alabama equaled its lowest points allowed in a game this season with 54. Tide forward Grant Nelson swatted a shot attempt by Kent State’s leading scorer VonCameron Davis in the opening few minutes, which helped set the tone the rest of the way.
“I think that [block] and just really everyone loading in the gaps, helping each other out,” Nelson said of Alabama’s defensive performance. “I thought that was huge. I think we kept them to six points in the first three media timeouts, that was huge for us. We emphasized that like I said and just a lot of credit to our guys for carrying it over on the court.”
While Alabama didn’t shoot the ball well, it made sure Kent State’s shooting was even more ineffective. Alabama communicated well on switches and contested shots from beyond the arc. It honed in on Davis, who averages 14.9 points per game but was limited to under 10 points for just the second time this season. Davis scored nine on an inefficient 4 of 15 from the field and had a minus-31 box plus-minus rating.
Coming into the game, Oats also felt like Kent State guard Jalen Sullinger (9.7 points per game) could be a dangerous weapon against Alabama’s defense with the potential to do the same thing Eaglestaff did for North Dakota. The Fighting Hawks guard scored a career-high 40 points, single-handedly pulling them back into the game late.
After missing the mark severely on guarding Eaglestaff, the Tide understood the assignment when it came to Sullinger and locked down the Kent State senior.
“He ended up shooting 1 of 14 and didn’t score in the second half,” Oats said. “So I think we did a little bit of a better job being locked in to a perimeter guy. We held them to a pretty good field goal percentage, they only shot 28%. Traditionally, this has been one of the hardest playing teams — I was in the MAC for six years and they get all of the O Boards. We gave up too many second-chance points but I thought for the most part our first-shot defense was good.”
Alabama continued to play effective post-defense in spite of the offensive rebounds. The Tide finished with six blocks as a team. Center Clifford Omoruyi won the Hard Hat Award for the most blue collar points and grabbed 12 rebounds while Nelson had 14. Off the bench, Derrion Reid had a pair of steals while Mouhamed Dioubate chipped in with two blocks.
Following the win, Alabama jumped from No. 57 to No. 42 in adjusted defensive efficiency, according to KenPom.com. As the Tide looks to build on its defensive momentum, better play on offense will have to follow. Alabama’s defense is much improved from last season when it was at its best, but it won’t be able to win games on defense alone when league play tips off on Jan. 4.
“We struggled a little offensively, and we’re gonna have to figure some stuff out here before SEC play,” Oats said. “The turnovers have been really just way too many — 13 in the first half. We did the same thing two games in a row. We only had one the second half against North Dakota. We ended up with six in the second half here. So we’ve got to do a better job at turnovers. I don’t have an answer for the free throw problems, but the only way to fix that is get in the gym and work. The good thing for us is we don’t have any school for a few weeks here, so after they get back from Christmas break, we’ll be in the gym and putting some time in.”
Alabama will conclude non-conference play against Summit League side South Dakota State. The Tide and Jackrabbits will tip off at 2 p.m. CT Dec. 29 inside Coleman Coliseum. The game will be broadcast on SEC Network+.

Seth McLaughlin Brings Alabama's Tennessee Victory Cigar Tradition to the Ohio State Sideline
Seth McLaughlin wasn’t able to play against Tennessee on Saturday night.
But that didn’t mean he couldn’t celebrate his team’s dominating 42-17 win the way he used to when he suited up for the Alabama Crimson Tide as an undergraduate student.
The cigar he had with him was not random or a prop. It was part of a tradition he learned in Tuscaloosa.
— Chase Brown (@chaseabrown__) December 22, 2024
As the legend has it, in 1961 one of Bear Bryant’s trainers lit up a stogie following a Tide win which had ended a five-game slide to the Volunteers. This created a tradition maintained over the next two decades – which eventually spread to the opposite sideline.
The Volunteers have been participating in the victory cigar tradition since the early 1980s. It has spread from the sideline into the stands and tailgates. Earlier this season, the Volunteers beat the Crimson Tide in Knoxville, creating a plume of smoke above Neyland Stadium.

So it was appropriate that McLaughlin, now with the Buckeyes following his Rimington Award-winning season in Columbus found a way to pay homage to his first alma mater while celebrating with his second one.
