Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has not yet made Justin Fields the team’s official starting quarterback, but he is still in line to start a fourth consecutive game to open the season when they play the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday afternoon. The Steelers, with a 3-0 start, are a small road favorite against the 1-2 Colts, who are coming off their first win of the season.

The Steelers’ Week 3 win against the Los Angeles Chargers seemed like a big development for Fields as he had by far his best passing day of the season, leading four scoring drives (including two touchdown drives) in another win. If he is able to guide Pittsburgh to a win on Sunday with another strong performance it would be difficult to imagine Russell Wilson getting the starting job back anytime soon.

It could be a promising offensive matchup for the Steelers, given their desire to run the ball and the Colts’ struggles in stopping the run at times early this season. But Pittsburgh is dealing with some injuries in the ground game, as starting left guard Isaac Seumalo is still working his way back from injury while running backs Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren are both dealing with injuries. Harris is expected to play but was seen with a sling on his arm earlier in the week.

This is also going to be a massive test for Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson, going up against a Steelers defense with a relentless pass rush that is allowing just 8.6 points per game through the first three weeks. Richardson has been a very boom-or-bust player early in his career. While he’s struggling with turnovers, he’s also making some of the most jaw-dropping throws you can imagine from a quarterback. There will be big-play opportunities in both directions here.

Mike Tomlin is only 32-40-3 against the spread as a road favorite in his head coaching career (going back to the start of the 2007 season), but he is 4-1 in such games since the start of the 2022 season.

For the second time in a month, a Jewish student at the University of Pittsburgh was attacked in what may have been an antisemitic hate crime, according to multiple US news sites and the police on Saturday.

The incident, which happened at around 2 am on Friday, is being investigated separately by both the FBI and the University of Pittsburgh Police, NBC reported. The police classified it as a hate crime/assault.

According to police reports, the student – who has not been identified – was leaving the University’s campus when a group of six to eight men assaulted him.

The student was wearing a Star of David necklace, according to Chabad of Pitt.

The victim told the police that when the group saw his necklace, they “hurled insults about Israel,” and at least three of them punched and kicked him, according to CBS and Chabad.

“The actors used antisemitic language,” Pittsburgh University Police stated in a news release. “A bystander intervened and ended the assault.” 

The victim allegedly suffered a bruised lip.

The university’s police posted a campus safety alert following the attack, alongside details of three of the suspects, who they described as men aged between 20 and 24. The three ranged from 170-200 pounds, and two were over six feet tall.

The FBI is looking into the assault to see whether it constituted a federal hate crime.

Responses from University, Jewish groups

In a statement on Friday, the University of Pittsburgh said it “unequivocally condemns antisemitism.”

“Any violence or antisemitic acts against our community will not be tolerated, regardless of who it comes from, or who it is directed at, hate of any kind has no place in our community.”

Shawn Brokos, director of community security for the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, said the incident was “very disheartening to learn about.” 

“Our Jewish students need to feel safe walking around, whether it’s on campus or off campus.”

Chabad at Pitt Rabbi Shmuli Rothstein said, “Seeing someone’s religion should not trigger something inside you to beat the junk out of him.”

“Despicable hatred runs rampant on Pitt’s campus,” he wrote on Instagram.

Jeffrey Finkelstein, CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, said, “Antisemitic attacks are completely unacceptable, and we will do everything we can to create a safe environment throughout the Pittsburgh area for Jewish citizens.” 

Previous attack on Jewish students

In a previous incident on August 29, two Jewish students were attacked with a glass bottle by a man later named Jarrett Buba.

Buba was charged with two counts of simple assault and two counts of aggravated assault.

Two of the students received medical attention at the scene after being struck by the bottle. The suspect behind the attack was arrested by Pittsburgh police, and the university said that the suspect has no affiliation with the institution of recklessly endangering another person, two counts of harassment, and one count of resisting arrest.

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt is no stranger to the record book, as his name is attached to three NFL records and 5 Steelers records.

One of Watt’s records as a Steeler is total sacks, of which Watt has 99.5 through 107 games as a Steeler. He also boasts a tied NFL record for sacks in a season, 22.5, which he shares with Michael Strahan.

That being said, this weekend’s matchup against the Colts presents Watt with an opportunity to add more to his legacy. With at least 0.5 of a sack this weekend, Watt would join the 100-sack club, a group that contains just 43 members.

The all-time NFL sack leader is Bruce Smith, who finished his career with 200 sacks. J.J. Watt, T.J.’s brother, is 24th all-time with 114.5 sacks. It seems like a distinct possibility that T.J. passes his brother’s mark, as T.J. has had 15 sacks in three seasons of his career.

However, the important distinction to make here is that Watt would become the second fastest player to reach 100 sacks, behind Reggie White, who did it in 96 games. If Watt gets a sack this weekend, he will do it in 108 games.

Watt would also become the third player to ever reach 100 sacks before the age of 30, joining Jared Allen and White in that even smaller group.

Watt already has three seasons where he has led the NFL in sacks, and it is possible he reaches that mark once again. With Watt’s 15 sacks being the NFL best in 2020, a regression by Watt this season could still see him top the league. With Aidan Hutchinson already having 6.5 sacks so far this season, Watt leading the league could prove unlikely, but a dominant game against the Colts could turn everything around.
