Concord Coalition to End Homelessness

Pleasant Street Apartments was successfully converted into eight one-bedroom apartments for individuals exiting homelessness. The building opened to residents in June 2024.

This transcript has been lightly edited for clarity.

Karen Jantzen: I am Karen Jantzen. I am the executive director of the Concord Coalition to End Homelessness.

Sierra Hubbard: My name is Sierra Hubbard. I am our Supportive Housing Program Manager here at CCEH.

Miles Whitener: I’m Miles Whitener. I sit on the Concord Coalition’s board of directors, and I’m a one-time client of CCEH.

Karen Jantzen: Our mission is pretty simple — it’s in our name. It’s to end homelessness in our community. We started out as a pretty much a volunteer organization, and over time we have grown. We serve hundreds upon hundreds of clients experiencing homelessness every day. We are a Concord based organization. We work with a lot of our partner agencies across the state in trying to eliminate homelessness, but the clients we serve are in the greater Concord area.

When we first started, we were a simple resource center, a place for people to come grab a cup of coffee and a place for people to get their mail. We’ve expanded from just having a resource center. We also offer supportive housing program.

Sierra Hubbard: So people who come from long-term homelessness and move into housing, either through properties that we own and provide those services, or through tenant based programs where we help them find an apartment out in the community. We provide supportive services, which is essentially case management, but also assistance with maybe getting groceries or making sure that they pay their rent on time. If it falls under the umbrella of helping to keep somebody housed, then we’re going to do that to assist that person.

Karen Jantzen: We are a low barrier shelter. We have 40 beds and we’re open seven days a week through December, January, February and March.

Miles Whitener: It’s almost as at times . . . like a triage situation. You have people that are coming in that are stressed out from the day. You see all kinds of things, just people shivering. Sometimes you’ll end up treating small wounds, cuts, contusions and stuff. It can be an experience if you’re not used to it, but it’s got its high sides, too, because you have the people that are coming in that are happy for the day to be over with. They’re happy for that bunk. And early on in the season, a lot of times people are just coming in and they’re done. They want to go to sleep, and that’s it. They hit the bunks, and they’re out like a light.

Karen Jantzen: I think a huge challenge is housing. It’s hard to help people and end homelessness if you just don’t have a place where you can put them.

Sierra Hubbard: It’s all about providing options for people so that they have choices in where they live. And in this rental market, we can’t provide that, which is really difficult. Um, we can’t realistically give somebody a lot of options on apartments because we’re lucky if we can find one.

Karen Jantzen: Funding is always a challenge, and volunteers are kind of the lifeblood of how we get things done here on a day to day basis, and we can always use more volunteers.

Miles Whitener: I was a client here for two years, I guess? The whole time that I was, I was at my camp. And it started with, I like to pull my own weight. I just feel like if someone’s taking care of me, I want, I want to give back to who’s who’s helping me. And then, you know, the idea was brought up, well, you know, they would like to have a lived experience voice on the board of directors. And that opportunity was presented to me and I went for it. I just I wanted to give back to the people that had essentially taken care of me for two years.

I have a very profound, deep belief that in the end, humankind will make the right choices, and the people that do this are going to show them how to do it. And I do believe eventually, over time, humanity will respond and do the right thing. And I want to be on that path with them when they make that choice.

New Hampshire Bettors Wagered More Than M During March Madness, Lottery Says

CONCORD, NH — New Hampshire Lottery players made more than 550,000 wagers totaling more than $25 million on this year’s men’s and women’s NCAA basketball tournaments, according to the lottery.

The tournaments began with conference play and continued through the NCAA brackets. Michigan won the men’s tournament, while UCLA won the women’s title.

“March is a special time of year for basketball, there’s nothing like these tournaments,” Charlie McIntyre, the executive director of the New Hampshire Lottery, said. “Dozens of games at all times of the day to kick off, buzzer beaters that send home tournament favorites, Cinderella runs from unassuming small schools, all culminating in two teams on the top of the mountain — and hopefully lots of wagers won by our New Hampshire players. With so many ways and opportunities to bet, March Madness is our largest sustained sports betting driver every single year. While I love watching as many games as I can, the best part of the tournaments is seeing all these wagers come in to support New Hampshire public education.”

Before the tournaments began, New Hampshire players heavily wagered on UConn, Florida, and Duke to win the men’s championship, according to the lottery. On the women’s side, the pre-tournament favorites among New Hampshire bettors were UConn, South Carolina, and UCLA.

The lottery said only one pre-tournament favorite for New Hampshire bettors won a title this year: the UCLA women. UCLA defeated South Carolina in a game oddsmakers had expected to be close. On the men’s side, Michigan won its first national title since 1989 in a championship game against UConn, which the lottery identified as New Hampshire’s betting favorite.

Sports betting has generated significant revenue for education since it launched in the state on Dec. 30, 2019, according to the lottery. Granite Staters have wagered nearly $4.5 billion, generating $187 million to support New Hampshire public education.

The lottery said New Hampshire residents can place wagers through the DraftKings Sportsbook app, the exclusive digital sportsbook operator in the state. The agency also said DraftKings offers responsible gaming tools, including My Stat Sheet, limit setting, cooling-off periods, and self-exclusion.

The New Hampshire Lottery said it has contributed more than $3 billion to education in the state since 1964. The commission, based in Concord, manages lottery operations in New Hampshire and regulates charitable gaming, simulcast racing, fantasy sports, and sports wagering.

Video: Sunny skies; highs reaching into the 40s

Temperatures early this morning are in the teens and 20s. We have clear skies across the area. I think everyone can agree. Let’s have some sunshine out there today, and I think full sun today and tomorrow. Today it’s with temperatures in the 40s. Tomorrow we’ll be back into the 50s and we’ll jump into the 60s on Friday afternoon. I think Friday is the relative warm day for us out there. We’ll slip back *** little bit over the weekend after the chance of *** shower Friday night, but. That chance of *** shower Friday night is really the only wet weather we have in the forecast all the way through the weekend. So, uh, while that was all going on yesterday, we had pollen counts which were on the modern category. Now the scale is out of 12. The first phase of pollen is tree pollen, and we are starting to see those buds on the trees in the southern half of the state. So this is around *** 5.5 out of 12. This will continue for *** good portion of the next several days and look for this to go up to. *** higher level as we go forward here over the next week or two. There is your ramp up in temperatures peaking Friday. We’ll still be in the 50s with dry skies over the weekend after that chance of *** shower later Friday night. *** lot of sunshine for us today. There may be *** little bit of *** lingering breeze at 5 to 15 miles an hour, but wouldn’t even call it breezy or even windy going into the afternoon. That is the next front, and again, by the time it gets here, it might be *** stray rain. Shower with temperatures in the 60s out ahead of it Friday afternoon and kind of holding in the 40s going into Friday evening. Temperatures right now down to the 20s. This is the recipe of clear skies and light winds. We’ve dropped all the way to the teens up north and yes, sub-zero atop Mount Washington for actual temperatures this morning. 40s this afternoon, running about 5 or 7 degrees cooler than our normal highs for this time of year. And after another seasonably chilly night with the clear skies. Light winds tonight. That is the beginnings of *** warming trend. Tomorrow, breeze will start to pick up out of *** southwesterly direction, as you will notice, just about full sunshine again for your Thursday afternoon. We get into Friday and we’ll kind of mix clouds with sunshine. We’ll call it partly sunny, and there will be the risk of *** shower as we go later into Friday evening. But as you will notice here on Futurecast, minus that chance of *** shower during the daylight hours Friday, there really isn’t much to write home about here as. as that rain chance going into Friday night, skies will clear very early Saturday, 60s Friday back into the 50s, but as you can see, it is partly sunny skies for both days over the weekend. Next chance of showers will likely be *** warm front arriving on Monday. And as you will notice all the way at the end of the 7 day forecast is that warm front with temperatures in the 60s Monday and *** chance to go above 70 on Tuesday.

As the latest system moves away, skies have cleared. This sets up full sunshine today and Thursday as temperatures get a boost as the week wears on. Highs on Friday could make it into the upper 60s. The weekend starts with a few showers then dry. Temperatures in the 50s. It is a chilly start to the day but sunshine will lead to a cool afternoon. Highs will remain mostly in the 40s.Temps will drop into the 20s tonight just about statewide with fair skies.Temperatures trend upward to end the week. Highs will bounce back into the 50s Thursday and above 60 on Friday.Passing showers will be possible later Friday night and into Saturday morning. That front will bring the temperatures back into the 50s for highs over the weekend.
