Wisconsin’s spring election is about for Tuesday with the high-profile — and file breakingly costly — Supreme Court docket race on the highest of the ticket, a handful of statewide poll referenda and native races throughout the state.

In recent times, courtroom instances and pandemics have continuously modified the panorama forward of elections, however this yr the foundations stay unchanged forward of Election Day.

Final yr, the Wisconsin Supreme Court docket dominated that the usage of absentee poll drop containers is illegitimate and that voters should return their very own absentee ballots. Plenty of voters with disabilities filed a lawsuit, arguing that the requirement they return their very own ballots was disenfranchising as a result of many individuals’s disabilities make it unimaginable to bodily place a poll in a mailbox or return it to native election officers.

A federal choose agreed, ruling that underneath the Voting Rights Act, voters with disabilities should be allowed to get help when returning a poll.

That ruling, nonetheless, has not stopped a variety of municipal clerks throughout the state from telling voters of their communities that they need to return their very own ballots. First reported by the Related Press final week, at the least a dozen clerks said on native web sites that voters should return their very own ballots.

Advocates for folks with disabilities have raised the alarm, stating that the confusion over the regulation can flip folks off from voting. Barbara Beckert, director of exterior advocacy for Incapacity Rights Wisconsin (DRW), says that as a result of Wisconsin’s election administration is split amongst greater than 1,800 municipal clerks, that may result in the regulation being interpreted otherwise in numerous communities throughout the state.

“I believe we appear to have essentially the most decentralized voting system within the nation as we’ve at all times heard and that’s actually inflicting issues with how we’re seeing this play out, sadly,” she says. “All these clerks the place they don’t have present details about poll return help on their web site, all of them point out drop containers aren’t allowed. It’s attention-grabbing that appears to be universally understood and communicated but it surely’s disappointing that with one other regulation we don’t see the knowledge being pushed to the group.”

The Wisconsin Elections Fee (WEC) despatched an e mail to clerks in February, reminding them they need to not violate the federal courtroom order.

“It is a reminder that voters with disabilities are entitled to obtain help finishing and delivering their absentee ballots,” the e-mail said. “Some jurisdictions are inserting absentee poll directions that say help is prohibited, with out noting the necessary exception for voters with disabilities. That is particularly vital as a result of final fall a federal choose issued a everlasting injunction and declaration affirming the precise of those voters to acquire help.   Please make sure that your absentee poll directions don’t contradict the federal courtroom’s order.”

WEC spokesperson Riley Vetterkind stated in an e mail that the company has usually reminded clerks about their obligations underneath the courtroom order in latest weeks and issued steerage on tips on how to adjust to the order final September.

“After listening to that there is likely to be some questions or uncertainty amongst clerks about final yr’s courtroom ruling on voters with a incapacity receiving help with poll supply, we’re reaching out to clerks by way of quite a lot of channels to remind them that any Wisconsin voter who requires help with mailing or delivering their absentee poll due to a incapacity should be permitted to obtain such help by an individual of the voter’s selection,” he stated.

Beckert provides that her group constantly hears of a number of methods wherein voters with disabilities face boundaries to voting, together with being denied help filling out a poll on the polls, curbside voting and voters being required to say their names and addresses out loud. If an individual faces any challenges accessing the poll due to a incapacity, they’ll name DRW’s voter hotline at 844-347-8683.

To register to vote, an individual wants a state-issued ID comparable to a driver’s license and a doc with proof of residence. If voters have IDs that don’t checklist  their present handle, they’ll present a utility invoice, lease doc or financial institution assertion to show the place they reside.

Election outcomes will seemingly not be out there as quickly as polls shut as a result of a number of communities throughout the state, together with Milwaukee which has essentially the most voters, use a central rely system for tallying absentee ballots. Central rely areas usually are not allowed to begin counting ballots till polls shut.

Whereas county clerks and media shops report unofficial vote totals, election winners aren’t declared till the official canvassing course of happens on the native, county and state ranges.

This story has been corrected to say it was the Voting Rights Act, not the People with Disabilities Act, which provides voters with disabilities the precise to get help casting a poll.

Wisconsin football’s season is sunk.

And it’s a program that’s facing uncharted waters after Friday’s dreadful showing in its 24-7 loss to Minnesota in the regular-season finale.

No bowl game. A losing season. Questions about the coaching staff. Questions about the roster.

The season has actually been sinking for some time, but the Badgers still had a chance to salvage whatever was left of it with a win over Minnesota.

It was a rivalry game. It was at home. And it was for a chance to play in a bowl game, something that every Wisconsin team has played in for the last 22 years.

Instead, the Badgers lost for the fifth straight time behind an offense that is no longer recognizable to players from the past. Wisconsin also suffered its third consecutive defeat at Camp Randall Stadium and fourth this season.

Former Wisconsin football players have been following the season closely and speaking out in disgust on social media as the losses have piled up. Like the fans at Camp Randall Stadium on Friday, they again let their feelings be known about the direction of the program as Wisconsin finished the 2024 season 5-7.

Menomonie, Wis. — A murky day for turkey day. In this part of western Wisconsin, “murky” is an understatement.

A narrow band of snow quickly dropped three inches on drivers — even sending a semi sliding into a ditch.

The National Weather Service says it’s likely because of a glass manufacturing company near Menomonie.

“That steam rises into the deck of clouds that are above it, and the steam acts as little particles that the water droplets can latch onto and create snow crystals” said Meteorologist Caleb Grunzke of the National Weather Service. “Everything came together perfectly for several inches of snow and major traffic problems.”

The Wisconsin State Patrol reported 16 crashes in a 5 hour span, including a six-car pile-up.

“We kind of drove in and out of the snow very dramatically” said Dave Erickson, who was making the trip back to the Twin Cities from Milwaukee.

“Drive safe, happy Thanksgiving” Erickson added.
