STARTING FIVE
• Minnesota opens a five-game home stand Wednesday and the start of the the home Big Ten season when the Nebraska Cornhuskers come to town. Game time is 8 p.m., and televised on Big Ten Network. Minnesota is 55-24 all time against the Huskers and went 1-2 last season.
• Minnesota fell in the regular season to the Huskers, both home and away, but knocked out Nebraska in the Big Ten Tournament last March. Dawson Garcia had three double-doubles last season, all three of which came against the Huskers. In the game during the Big Ten Tournament, Minnesota won, 78-75 at the United Center. The last time these two teams faced each other at Williams Arena resulted in an overtime Husker win, 81-79, on Jan. 7, 2023.
• Despite the loss to Ohio State, Dawson Garcia dominated the game when he scored a career-high 36 points and 11 rebounds Sunday. Garcia’s 36-point game marks the most points scored by a Big Ten player this season, topping the 35-point efforts by MSU’s Tyson Walker versus JMU and Purdue’s Zach Edey at Northwestern. The 36 points by Dawson Garcia vs Ohio State last night is most by an opponent in the 26 year history of Value City Arena. Garcia also established his 500th career rebound in the game. For the second time this year, Garcia had 10-plus free throws when we made 12-of-14. This season, he averages 20.5 ppg, which ranks second in the Big Ten and 26th nationally. In his career, Garcia has averaged 13.7 ppg and 16.5 as a Gopher.
• Cam Christie is already making his presence known just seven games into his collegiate career. In that span, Christie has had four double-digit games, including back-to-back when he had 20 against New Orleans and 11 points at Ohio State. Christie also missed the first game due to an illness. He is averaging 11 points in his young career.
• Minnesota ranks high nationally and in the Big Ten in a couple categories. The Gophers rank first in the league in bench points and 26th nationally, averaging 31.1. Minnesota also ranks second in the Big Ten in assists per game and 16th nationally averaging 18.1. The Gophers rank fourth in the league in rebounds per game (40.1) and 55th nationally. Minnesota’s free throw percentage of 73.5 is also sixth in the league and 63rd nationally.
LAST GAME RECAP
• Dawson Garcia led all players with a career-high 36 points and added 11 rebounds for his second double-double this season, helping Minnesota cut Ohio State’s 22-point lead to just six with 3:24 remaining, but the Buckeyes (7-1, 1-0) held on for an 84-74 win in the Big Ten-opener for both teams. Garcia made a career-high 12-of-25 field goals and was 12-of-14 at the free throw line, with 28 points coming in the second half. It’s his seventh career double-double, and fifth at Minnesota.
• Cam Christie made 5-of-8 field goals to finish with 11 points, and Elijah Hawkins added 10 points, five assists, and three steals for the Gophers, who opened Big Ten play with a road game for the fifth time in the past six years.
• Minnesota was outrebounded, 34-30, but the Gophers had a 36-28 edge in points in the paint. The Gophers made 28-of-58 (.483) field goals, but just 4-of-14 (.286) from three-point range, and 14-of-20 (.700) at the line.
ABOUT NEBRASKA
• Nebraska suffered its first loss of the season Sunday to in-state rival Creighton, 89-60, in Lincoln, Neb. With the loss, the Huskers drop to 7-1 this season and open Big Ten play Wednesday.
• The Huskers have four averaging double-digit points. Keisei Tominaga leads the team averaging 15.5 points. Returning from season-ending injury last year, Juwan Gary averages 14.4 ppg, while Bradley transfer Rienk Mast averages 14.0 and Charlotte transfer Brice Williams follows at 13.5 ppg. Mast also averages a team-best 9.8 rebounds, while Jamarques Lawrence leads the team in assists (25).
• As a team, Nebraska averages 78.9 points and allows just 65.3 per game. The Huskers are shooting 43.9 percent from the field and 31.9 from beyond the arc, while just allowing 27.9 to its opponents. The Huskers rank first in the Big Ten in three-point attempts and eighth in three-point percentage. They average 8.6 treys per game, which ranks second in the league. Committing just 77 turnovers this year, the Huskers also rank third in assist/turnover ratio at 1.6. As a team, the Huskers also average 42.1 rebounds per game.
