Q&A With Desmond Howard: 2022 CFB Preview, Modelo Partnership, Michigan Hopes, Playoff Picks
The 2022 school soccer season is upon us and every part appears up for grabs this 12 months after the craziness of final 12 months. And ESPN’s Desmond Howard can have a entrance seat to all of it.
Not many individuals have discovered the type of success earlier than, throughout and after skilled soccer that Desmond Howard has. The previous Michigan star was a Heisman Trophy winner in school, a Tremendous Bowl MVP within the NFL and is now one of many high school soccer analysts at ESPN in addition to one of many co-hosts on School GameDay.
We caught up with Desmond to debate the brand new school soccer season, his hopes for his beloved Michigan Wolverines, his latest partnership with Modelo, his picks for the School Soccer Playoff and his profession on ESPN School GameDay.
This interview with Desmond Howard is made potential by Modelo:
TheSpun: You’ve teamed with Modelo for his or her Combating Spirit marketing campaign. What made you wish to get on board with them now?
Desmond Howard: We did a marketing campaign collectively final 12 months they usually helped me rejoice the 30-year anniversary of the punt return towards Ohio State which clearly led to sealing the deal for me to win the Heisman.
The partnership went so properly that we determined to run it again. It’s a celebration of the followers. I admire the followers and what they bring about to varsity soccer – not simply the sport, however to School GameDay too. So I actually admire followers and we’re gonna attempt to discover the perfect “full-time fan” – the No. 1 full-time fan and reward them with a six-figure wage, and provides them an opportunity to fly them out to the nationwide championship recreation in LA. I feel it’s going to be an exquisite marketing campaign. We had a good time final 12 months and I’m wanting ahead to seeing the entire nice followers.
School soccer is simply across the nook. Get the video games, get the followers – who deliver such a singular power – and Modelo is all about “the combating spirit” so nothing speaks to that fairly just like the followers do.
TheSpun: Week 1 of the 2022 school soccer season is nearly right here. Which video games are you wanting ahead to essentially the most this September?
DH: I’m glad you mentioned this September as a result of that offers me a variety of video games. We have now some nice video games early. What was lacking for fairly a while was not having these large video games early. Now we’re beginning to have an increasing number of of these, and I’m very appreciative of that. After I was in school, that’s what we did. Our non-conference schedule was towards groups you’d acknowledge. We performed Notre Dame, UCLA, Maryland, Boston School. We performed colleges that you just’d acknowledge so it’s good to see a few of these marquee matchups.
Clearly the large one – the monster recreation – is Notre Dame vs. Ohio State in Columbus. That’s gonna be an enormous matchup, not simply because their manufacturers however as a result of they don’t play typically. They don’t see one another on the gridiron that usually, in order that’s a monster matchup.
[Then we have] Alabama touring to Austin, Texas to tackle the Longhorns. You’ve obtained former Alabama coach Steve Sarkisian, now he’s the top man up there (at Texas) and we’re gonna see if the “grasshopper can snatch the pebble from the grasp.” That’ll be a very good one.
However I’m down right here in Florida and there may be a lot hype and a lot pleasure in regards to the (U of Miami) Canes. They’ve obtained Mario Cristobal, he’s an area man, they love him right here, they usually opened up the checkbook to provide him an ideal teaching employees. They obtained three guys on their employees with head teaching expertise. Plus they obtained Josh Gattis, the OC at Michigan a 12 months in the past who gained the Assistant Coach of the Yr award. Corridor of Famer Jason Taylor. Ed Reed is part of their program. You go to the Canes apply and it’s like a who’s-who of soccer. They’re gonna go School Station and tackle Texas A&M – that’s an enormous recreation.
These three we are able to discuss for hours on.
TheSpun: How does Michigan take that subsequent step in 2022 and do you expect they’ll?
DH: As an analyst you’ll assume that Michigan is gonna be within the place the place you wish to wait and see simply because they misplaced a lot. You don’t take steps simply because (of what you probably did final 12 months). You must hold issues intact they usually weren’t capable of hold so much intact.
Josh Gattis, he obtained these luggage from the Miami boosters… he was capable of benefit from that. He migrated from Ann Arbor all the way down to Coral Gables. Additionally they misplaced (Mike) Macdonald, the defensive coordinator. He went again to Baltimore to turn into the play-caller for the Baltimore Ravens protection – which is a step up, so you possibly can’t fault him for doing that.
They misplaced each coordinators, three first-rounders on protection… so you possibly can’t simply say that simply because they went to the Playoff final 12 months’s they’re going to take the following step. Now you’ve obtained to search for addition by subtraction if you take a look at the large image.
I’m excited for them. They appear good on offense, however protection goes to be the query mark and we’re going to see how they change all of that expertise on protection that they misplaced.
TheSpun: “WHO’S IN” this 12 months?
DH: What’s it August? (laughs) My factor is, final 12 months presently the entire specialists had Michigan to complete fourth of their division – not the convention – simply of their division. I don’t assume anybody picked Cincy (possibly me since I wish to exit on a limb like that now and again). We had some surprises…
Oh man, let me see… I feel Alabama will make a shock look (laughs).
I don’t really feel strongly about some other groups so I don’t actually wish to identify anybody else since folks will maintain you to it.
I wanna see what occurs with Clemson. The attention-grabbing factor about Miami is it is a prime time for them to rise to a different degree. I imagine the ACC is huge open and I feel Dabo goes to have a slight quarterback competitors in the course of the common season. I’m simply not bought on Clemson. They’re not the workforce they was. We’re speaking a couple of man who misplaced each of his coordinators. So the straightforward undeniable fact that he misplaced these longtime assistants on offense and protection, I’m actually curious to see what they’re going to appear like.
There are loads of query marks for lots of groups. I’m not likely prepared to tug the set off and say “This workforce is gonna be within the Playoff. That workforce is gonna be within the Playoff.”
I feel it’ll be simpler to say Alabama.
Ohio State – we’ve gotta see what occurs with their defenses. They’ve obtained a brand new defensive coordinator. You hear the appropriate issues popping out of Columbus.
However I don’t really feel strongly about any groups. I want I had a darkish horse like Cincinnati a 12 months in the past, or a Group of 5 workforce that I may simply throw on the market. As of now, right this moment, I don’t have that.
As I begin to do my analysis and we strategy Week Zero, I’ll have some solutions.
TheSpun: Is Desmond Howard on the Mt. Rushmore of Michigan Soccer?
DH: That’s a kind of questions that I’ll go away as much as the followers and the specialists. I’ve performed what I can do and I’m actually honored that my identify is ever talked about with these greats. It is a storied program, the winningest program percentage-wise within the historical past of faculty soccer. And I obtained my quantity retired – my quantity’s within the rafters.
After I first went to Michigan, Michigan was a working college. We ran the ball – three yards and a cloud of mud. So to have the ability to accomplish what I did was a shock from that standpoint and I’m simply honored to be within the dialog when folks discuss in regards to the Mt. Rushmore of Michigan Soccer Gamers.
To have the ability to accomplish what I did was a shock from that standpoint.
TheSpun: What has modified about School GameDay essentially the most from if you began till now?
DH: What’s modified essentially the most (laughs) has been the time. It was a 90 minute present once I first began. The fan help has grown which is simply implausible. However aside from that I feel we’ve been capable of hold the identical kind of ardour for the game. I feel that’s why it’s been so constant. Not solely the fervour for the game, however the ardour for our product.
I used to be so amazed with the primary time I sat down in my first School GameDy assembly, with Chris Fowler being the host, and being with these guys for 40-45 minutes on one subject as a result of they cared that a lot – and a couple of subject I believed was trivial – about how the knowledge obtained throughout to the viewers, and the way the viewers would see what the dialogue was about or what the subject was about.
I bear in mind coming residence to my spouse and speaking to my daughter, telling them that I used to be blown away by the element being paid to issues that don’t appear vital as a result of the entire thing is so vital.
We’ve (additionally) gone from one nice host in Chris Fowler to a different wonderful host with Rece Davis. It’s just like the Packers going from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers.
TheSpun: What’s the perfect non-Michigan Stadium environment you have ever witnessed?
DH: I’ll let you know what: I used to be totally impressed with Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Oregon (for the Oregon Geese). It’s actually small and quaint, however they get loud as hell. It’s loopy how loud they get in Eugene, Oregon. It’s one of many few locations that when GameDay travels to the West Coast that I’m enthusiastic about as a result of it’s a 6 a.m. begin for us on the market – however even at 6 a.m., it’s like a 9 a.m. begin within the SEC as a result of they bring about that type of power early within the morning.
**
Not many individuals have as a lot ardour for the sport of faculty soccer as Desmond Howard. We’ll be seeing him so much on Saturdays this season, and when he is on break, he’ll in all probability be having fun with the motion with a pleasant Modelo.

Ryan Walters Emotional in Postgame Presser Following Purdue’s Loss to Michigan State
Ryan Walters cleared his throat and took a long pause before answering a question after Purdue’s 24-17 loss to Michigan State on Friday night. The second-year coach was clearly emotional after the Boilermakers fell to 1-10, letting another opportunity slip through their fingers.
Following another disappointing outcome at Spartan Stadium, Walters was asked why it was more difficult to keep his emotions in check on Friday night.
After taking a few seconds to collect his thoughts, Walters answered the question.
“I don’t know a locker room in the country that would be 1-9, going down like we went down in the first half and continue to fight,” he said. “There’s no finger-pointing. They’ve still been practicing their tails off. They’ve still been showing up and going to work every day.
“If you have kids — I don’t know if you have any kids — when your kids work hard, you want them to have success. They’re working hard, man. It hurts.”
Purdue dug itself into a hole early, trailing Michigan State 24-3 at halftime. It looked like the Spartans were going to cruise to a victory and that the Boilermakers were going to roll over and play dead.
Instead, Purdue came out of halftime showing serious fight. They scratched and clawed their way back into the game, cutting the lead to 24-17 with 13:54 remaining in the game.
“Going into halftime, it felt like the game was getting away from us and the guys in the locker room, it just didn’t seem like they flinched,” Walters said.
Purdue had three more opportunities to tie the game, but failed to take advantage. Numerous dropped passes, a struggling rushing attack and an interception proved too costly in the last three possessions.
It marked the third time this season Purdue had found itself with a chance to get its first Big Ten win but came up short. The Boilermakers also dropped overtime contests to Northwestern and Illinois.
Now, there’s just one game remaining on the schedule: at No. 5 Indiana. Purdue is 1-10 and remains winless in Big Ten play. As much as the blowout losses have stung, night’s like Friday have been even more difficult to handle for Walters and the Boilers.
They’ve come close multiple times this year, but haven’t been able to clear the hurdle.
PURDUE ATTENDANCE AT 20-YEAR HIGH: Despite Purdue’s struggles on the field this season, fans still flocked to Ross-Ade Stadium on Saturdays to watch Boilermaker football. CLICK HERE

WATCH: Everything Michigan State’s Jonathan Smith Said After Spartans’ Victory Over Purdue
EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State finally picked up a win, its first one since Week 8 when it defeated Iowa at home.
While it may seem like the Spartans’ season has been on a decline, even with this win, Michigan State is still just a win away from earning a trip to a bowl game.
Michigan State coach Jonathan Smith discussed Friday’s win when he addressed the media after the game.
You can watch below:
Below is a transcript from Smith’s opening statement:
Smith: “OK, well, obviously pleased to find a way to win a game. Kind of a tale of two halves; all of you that watched it offensively, defensively, first half, really pleased. I think we had four possessions in the first half. Had points on all four of them. Ended the ended the half with some points; we were feeling good there, but then it totally flipped in the second half. Credit to Purdue, whether it’s adjustments, things like that, but those guys battled for four quarters. And credit some to our defense, too. Early second half, we had gave up a couple of scores there but found a way [in the] fourth quarter to tighten things down, and to give up 17 points and have two turnovers defensively, that’s a solid effort. Offensively, again we got to play for four quarters. And we want to do that better. But found a way to win a game, got another open game with a lot to play for next week.”
