Jonathan Taylor requests trade from Colts, Indy reportedly considering placing RB on non-football injury list

Jonathan Taylor is looking to continue his football career elsewhere. Taylor has requested a trade from the Indianapolis Colts after asking for a new contract to begin training camp, CBS Sports NFL Insider Jonathan Jones confirms after it was first reported by NFL Media.

And in the latest development on Sunday, the Colts are now reportedly considering placing Jonathan Taylor on non-football injury list (NFI). Taylor suffered an injury to his back while working out on own in Arizona and is also still rehabbing from January ankle surgery. He’s currently on PUP list.

Taylor is entering the final year of his rookie contract and has merited an extension from the team that made him a second-round pick three years ago. In three seasons with the Colts, Taylor has rushed for 3,841 yards and 33 touchdowns while also having 802 receiving yards and three touchdowns. He’s the second-fastest player in team history to rush for 3,000 yards (33 games), as only Edgerrin James was faster (30 games). His 36 touchdowns are the second most by a Colts player after their first three seasons.

Colts owner Jim Irsay admitted Thursday no contract talks have taken place with Taylor, not even exchanging any numbers. As the running back market continues to get worse, Taylor chimed in his thoughts earlier this month on running backs not getting paid.

Irsay made matters worse after Taylor asked to be traded with some bizarre comments. The Colts owner has made controversial statements regrading Taylor this past week, but this one hit a different level.

“If I die tonight and Jonathan Taylor is out of the league, no one’s gonna miss us, Irsay said, per The Athletic. “The league goes on. We know that. The National Football (League) rolls on. It doesn’t matter who comes and who goes, and it’s a privilege to be a part of it.”

Regardless of Irsay’s comments, he also told Sports Illustrated the team has no intentions of trading Taylor.

“We’re not trading Jonathan… end of discussion,” Irsay said. “Not now and not in October!”

Taylor’s days in Indianapolis appear to be over, as he can also choose to not play despite what Irsay says. Regardless of a devalued running back market, Taylor is one of the league’s top players at his position.

Here’s an early look at potential landing spots for Taylor:

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Buccaneers moved on from Leonard Fournette this offseason in favor of Rachaad White and Chase Edmunds. Tampa Bay will rely on White to be the featured back in the offense, but Taylor would provide a much-needed boost for an offense that already has two good skill position players in Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.

Taylor would also take significant pressure off Baker Mayfield to carry the offense as well.

Miami Dolphins

Let’s assume the Dolphins don’t get Dalvin Cook. Do they turn their attention to a younger option in Taylor?

Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel likes to use the running back-by-committee approach, which will save the tread on Taylor’s tires as the season wears on. Is that needed?

The Dolphins have a solid rotation with Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson, as they combined to average 4.8 yards per carry last season. Rookie De’Von Achene provides even more speed in the backfield, giving a Miami a solid trio between the three.

Taylor would be the No. 1 back in Miami, regardless of what McDaniel wants to do with his rotation. That may be the move to put the Dolphins over the top in the AFC East.

New England Patriots

The Patriots don’t have much depth behind Rhamondre Stevenson, who is clearly the No. 1 running back (and a player the Patriots really like. After missing out on DeAndre Hopkins to bolster the passing game, New England could use extra help on offense to assist Mac Jones.

Pierre Strong is in line to be the No. 2 running back after having just 10 carries in year one, but a Taylor-Stevenson combination would significantly bolster the offense. Do Taylor and Stevenson equally split the carries?

The Patriots should at least see what it would take to get Taylor. Perhaps New England would be the organization that gives him a good second contract.

Report: Pirates Promote Top Pitching Prospect to Indianapolis

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates are reportedly promoting one of their top pitching prospects in their minor league system, getting him closer to the MLB.

Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reported that the Pirates will promote right-handed pitcher Bubba Chandler from Double-A Altoona Curve to Triple-A Indianapolis Indians.

Chandler tossed seven innings of one run ball tonight for Altoona. He has pitched to a 2.61 ERA with 10.6 K/9 since the start of June.

Chandler played for North Oconee High School in Bogart, Ga., 60 miles east of Atlanta. He starred in multiple sports, including basketball, golf, football and baseball. He originally committed to Georgia to play baseball, but then decommitted and committed to Clemson to play both football and baseball.

He had a fantastic senior season for North Oconee, going 8-1 with just a 1.25 ERA, plus 96 strikeouts in 44.2 innings pitched, while hitting .411 with eight home runs, 12 doubles and 35 RBI.

The Pirates would select Chandler with the No, 72 overall pick in the Third Round of the 2021 MLB Draft and signed him for $3 millon signing bonus, an over slot signing.

He pitched and also played shortstop for the Rookie-Level Florida Complex Pirates in 2021 and 2022 and then earned promotion to the Bradenton Marauders in the Single-A Florida State League.

Chandler chose to focus on pitching heading into the 2023 season, which would show his best talents. He started 24 games for the Greensboro Grasshoppers in High-A, with a 9-4 record, 4.75 ERA in 106.0 innings pitched, making 120 strikeouts to 51 walks and holding hitters to a .265 batting average.

He made it up to Altoona for just one game in 2023, allowing just one hit in five innings of work and getting the win.

Chandler has played all of 2024 in Double-A, starting 16 of 19 games, a 6-7 record, one save, one shutout. He also had a 3.70 ERA in 80.1 innings pitched, allowing 55 hits, 33 earned runs and 26 walks, while making 94 strikeouts and holding hitters to a .192 batting average, along with having a 1.01 WHIP.

His last start came Friday night against the Richmond Flying Squirrels, allowing just two hits and one run in 6.0 innings pitched, while making six strikeouts on 80 pitches.

Chandler has also pitched great since the start of June, with a 2.61 ERA and 10.6 K/9.

MLB Pipeline ranks Chandler as the No. 49 prospect in their top 100 across baseball, the No. 9 right-handed pitcher and No. 12 pitcher. They also rate him as the highest Pirates prospect.

National discount retailer to make it's way to downtown Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS — The downtown Indy building Claypool Court is getting a new retailer.

Officials hope major names like Burlington will bring more Hoosiers and visitors to Mile Square.

“There’s definitely a lot of higher-end restaurants right around this area, so I think bringing in some retail stores isn’t a bad idea,” Wesley Slaughter, who lives downtown, said.

The store will sit at Washington and Illinois Streets, an area Slaughter says will be a good fit because it’s a heavily trafficked intersection.

“I could see it being beneficial to get more people in the area because otherwise you have to drive outside of 465 just to hit one of those stores,” Slaughter said.

TJ Maxx has been a big part of the downtown retail scene for many years, but now there is some competition with the Burlington that’s going to be a couple of doors down.

“We’re excited anytime that there’s a new addition to the retail landscape here in downtown Indianapolis,” Taylor Schaffer, with Downtown Indy Inc., said.

Schaffer says this is just part of a pipeline of new projects and development coming to the area.
