Late-night reaction: Detroit Tigers fans deserve better. It’s time for change

DETROIT – The final time I rushed to my laptop computer late at night time to write down a Detroit Tigers piece, it was as a result of the crew had simply traded for Austin Meadows.

Everybody was excited. Opening Day was proper across the nook and the lengthy, depressing rebuild was lastly coming to an finish.

Or so we thought.

Tonight’s subject is much less enjoyable. Simply hours in the past, those self same Detroit Tigers acquired embarrassed in a 9-0 loss to the Oakland Athletics. Followers at Comerica Park watched the offense — which has scored a traditionally low 85 runs in 31 video games — get shut out for seven innings by a pitcher who couldn’t even get Triple-A batters out final month.

That’s proper: Rookie starter Zach Logue, making his second profession MLB look, allowed simply 5 hits whereas blanking the Tigers for seven innings.

Logue gave up 10 earned runs, 21 hits and eight walks in simply 16 innings at Triple-A in April. His 1.813 WHIP means minor-league lineups put about two runners on base per inning. The Tigers couldn’t even common one.

Certain, typically issues like that occur in baseball. However don’t let the Tigers off the hook that simply. On Tuesday, they have been shut out for five.1 innings by Adrian Martinez, who was making his MLB debut after giving up 16 earned runs in 19.1 innings whereas pitching in — you guessed it — Triple-A.

That’s 12.1 scoreless innings in opposition to two pitchers who couldn’t get minor leaguers out.

These losses dropped the Tigers to 9-22 on the season. There are nonetheless 131 video games left to play, however followers who watched final 12 months know this begin is a dying sentence.

It was enjoyable for awhile, watching the Tigers attempt to get again to .500 after beginning the 2021 season 9-24. However that wasn’t imagined to be the case this 12 months. The crew signed Javier Baez, Eduardo Rodriguez, Andrew Chafin, and Michael Pineda. Al Avila traded for Meadows and Tucker Barnhart. High prospect Spencer Torkelson is right here, too.

But it surely hasn’t made a distinction. It’s Could 11, and the Tigers’ season is successfully over. The roster is healthier than the report exhibits, however it’s not adequate to climb out of this cavern.

Right here’s the factor: It’s not “early” anymore. We don’t want to attend for Sparky Anderson’s famed 40-game mark to know one thing is philosophically flawed with the offense.

Take a look at the house run totals for a few of the Tigers gamers in 2021:

  • Baez — 31

  • Torkelson — 30 (minors)

  • Meadows — 27

  • Grossman — 23

  • Haase — 22

  • Schoop — 22

  • Candelario — 16

That’s a listing of seven reputable energy hitters. Effectively, in 636 mixed at-bats to date this season, that group has hit simply 10 dwelling runs.

Baseball is a tricky sport, however confirmed main leaguers like Baez, Meadows, Grossman, Schoop, and Candelario don’t typically have such extended, simultaneous, similar-looking slumps.

There’s one thing damaged in regards to the crew’s strategy. No one hits with energy. When the ball is hit arduous, it’s virtually all the time on the bottom. This crew has scored three runs or fewer in 24 of 31 video games. Apart from a 6-0 win throughout the front-end of Tuesday’s doubleheader, the Tigers have scored 15 runs in Could.

I didn’t count on the Tigers to make the playoffs this 12 months (you may see my playoff picks right here, please ignore the Phillies), however they need to have been aggressive properly into the summer season months. On the very least, they need to be beating up on inferior rosters just like the Oakland Athletics and Pittsburgh Pirates.

However no, the Tigers have the worst report within the American League. They’re solely two video games higher than the worst crew in baseball, the Cincinnati Reds, who traded away virtually all of their good gamers and began the season 3-22.

For the sixth 12 months in a row, it’s not even mid-Could, and Tigers followers have been drained of all hope.

This fan base has been affected person. When Chris Ilitch and Al Avila insisted that dropping and refusing to spend cash over the previous few years would repay, most individuals understood it was a part of the method. However that course of has gone on lengthy sufficient.

What’s taking place on the sector isn’t straight the fault of Ilitch and Avila, however it turns into their downside in the event that they don’t make some modifications. Is one-fifth of the season not sufficient of a pattern dimension to see that one thing’s flawed?

The title on the new seat appears to be hitting coach Scott Coolbaugh, and he definitely could possibly be in peril if it’s his philosophy crippling the offense. Why can’t Torkelson hit low-90s fastballs proper down the center? Why is Candelario swinging at balls within the grime? Can somebody inform Baez his bat isn’t lengthy sufficient to achieve the left-handed batter’s field?

How a lot blame belongs to A.J. Hinch, who so masterfully pulled the Tigers out of a gap final 12 months to the tune of a 68-61 end? He’s thought-about the most effective managers within the recreation, but when final 12 months wasn’t sufficient to indicate the workers that April and Could matter, I should be lacking one thing.

Detroit has spent the final six years because the laughingstock of baseball — that shouldn’t have been the case as soon as once more. Now, the best possible followers can hope for is a summer season resembling final 12 months — ethical victories and silver linings.

Detroit deserves higher. Tigers followers deserve higher. It’s time to make a change.

Why Ben Johnson Coaching Chicago Bears Could Be Disaster

Why Ben Johnson Coaching Chicago Bears Could Be Disaster

Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson’s name is being floated around as a top candidate for a head coaching vacancy within the NFC North.

Johnson is reportedly intrigued by the Chicago Bears’ head coaching job, which opened after the Bears fired Matt Eberflus on the day after Thanksgiving. Some analysts viewed the Lions’ 34-17 win over the Bears on Sunday, which featured one of the most unique trick plays of the season, as an audition from Johnson for the vacancy.

It’s worth noting that Johnson turned down interest from teams across the league to remain with the Lions after last season, and could be in position to do so again depending on how the team’s season finishes.

The Bears job is one of several expected to be open, but it’s the one that Johnson has been associated closest to at this point. With the success that Johnson’s offenses have had over his three years as coordinator, and the proximity that the Bears have to Detroit as members of the NFC North, it is a natural pairing.

However, there’s more elements to a potential pairing that could be cause for concern. For starters, the Bears have struggled mightily as of late. They haven’t finished with a winning record since their 12-4 season in 2018, and have made just one other playoff appearance (2020) in that time span.

There has been disfunction throughout the organization this season, as they’ve lost nine games in a row dating back to a Hail Mary loss to the Washington Commanders in Week 8.

Additionally, there’s concern about the longevity of general manager Ryan Poles, and the team’s ownership, the McCaskey family, has drawn criticism from the fan base for its decision-making.

Because the Bears have struggled, and looked hapless at points, Johnson likely wouldn’t be easily enticed to inherit this situation.

However, the Bears also do have some elements working for them. Most notably, Johnson would get the opportunity to work with 2024 No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams. The USC product has shown some promise throughout a rookie season that has lacked significant wins, but one filled with promise.

Johnson had high praise for Williams when asked about him by Lions OnSI leading up to the Week 16 game. He has thrown for 3,271 yards, 19 touchdowns and five interceptions over the course of his first NFL campaign.

It’s easy to see why the Bears would be interested in Johnson. He’s the creative architect of one of the league’s best offenses and has played a vital role in Jared Goff’s career revival over the last several seasons.

What the 38-year-old coach has done with Goff has been well-documented. If he were to strike up a relationship of this nature with Williams, he could make the young passer into one of the league’s best talents at the position.

Williams has good weapons around him that could allow him to succeed in the right scheme. Chicago could also have another high draft pick depending on where they finish, which will allow whomever takes over as coach to add another highly touted piece to the roster.

Additionally, it’s expected that the Bears will break ground on a new stadium next year with hopes of finishing construction in 2028.

Ultimately, it’s been reported that Johnson won’t interview for jobs simply to say he did it. Rather, he is expected to be selective and interview for positions that he would want to take. If he does take a meeting with Chicago, which he is reportedly expected to do, it would be a sign that he would want the job.

Johnson’s focus in the current future remains on bringing a Super Bowl to Detroit this season. If he were to do that, it would make the potential pill of him taking over in Chicago much easier to swallow. However, the Bears’ interest will make the offseason very intriguing as Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn both navigate their futures.
