DAYTON — The Wright State women’s soccer program released its 2023 fall schedule on Monday, a slate featuring a season-opening trip to Arizona and eight regular-season home matches.

The Raiders will prepare for the upcoming 2023 campaign with two exhibition matches, facing Toledo (August 6) at home and Western Michigan (August 10) on the road. 

Wright State will open the regular season out west in Arizona with matchups at Arizona State (August 17) and Grand Canyon (August 20) before welcoming Southern Indiana to Alumni Field for its home opener on August 24. 

WSU returns to road competition with matches at Central Michigan (August 27) and Morehead State (August 30), followed by in-state home contests versus Dayton (September 3) and Akron (September 10) to conclude its non-conference schedule. 

The Raiders open Horizon League action at Green Bay on September 14 while also facing road matches against Robert Morris (September 24), defending HL champion Milwaukee (October 8), Purdue Fort Wayne (October 15), and Cleveland State (October 21) in conference play. 

Wright State will go on to host Youngstown State (September 21), Oakland (September 30), IUPUI (October 5), Detroit Mercy (October 12), and Northern Kentucky (October 25) during the League portion of its schedule. 

The Horizon League Championship will begin on Oct. 28, featuring the No. 3 and 4 seeds as hosts. The remainder of the tournament will occur at the site of the No. 1 seed on November 2 and 4.  

OPPONENT INFO

Toledo (Aug. 6, Alumni Field; exhibition)
– Toledo compiled a 2-10-6 overall record and a 1-6-4 mark in the Mid-American Conference last year. Wright State and UT last met in regular-season action in 2019, which resulted in a 4-1 loss for the Raiders.

Western Michigan (Aug. 10, Kalamazoo, MI; exhibition)
– Western Michigan finished the 2022 season 5-9-5 overall and 5-4-2 against MAC opponents. WMU had its season end versus Bowling Green in the MAC quarterfinals. The Raiders and Broncos last met in 2018, with WMU handing Wright State a 2-0 loss on the road.

Arizona State (August 17, Tempe, AZ; season opener)
– Arizona State had an overall record of 9-6-3 in 2022, highlighted by the program’s second NCAA Tournament appearance in the last three seasons. The Sun Devils were ousted by No. 8 seed Portland 3-0 in the first round of postseason competition. The season opener will be the first-ever meeting between Wright State and ASU. 

Grand Canyon (August 20, Phoenix, AZ)
– Grand Canyon is coming off a strong 2022 campaign, as the Lopes went 11-7-2 overall and 6-4-1 in WAC play. GCU defeated Utah Tech 3-0 in the opening round of the WAC tournament before falling to top-seeded Utah Valley 3-2 in double overtime in the semifinals. Wright State has never faced Grand Canyon since the origination of its program in 1985. 

Southern Indiana (August 24, Alumni Field; home opener)
– Southern Indiana enters its second year as a Division I program in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Screaming Eagles went 5-8-4 overall last year, which included a 1-5-2 mark against conference opponents. The August 24 meeting will be the first ever between Wright State and USI.

Central Michigan (August 27, Mount Pleasant, MI)
– Central Michigan compiled a 2-11-5 overall record in 2022, including a 1-6-4 mark in MAC play. Wright State defeated CMU 3-0 in last year’s home opener, with Lauren Borchert, Annika Samborski, and Maddie Mitchell finding the back of the net. Returning Raiders’ Marcella Sizer and Mariella Hartmann added an assist apiece in the victory. CMU leads the all-time series 2-1-1 over four matches.  

Morehead State (August 30, Morehead, KY)
– Morehead State is coming off a 7-7-4 showing in 2022. The Eagles went 4-2-3 against OVC opponents and lost to No. 2 seed SIUE in the tournament semifinals. Wright State holds a 16-1-0 edge in the all-time series, last beating MSU 2-1 in 2019. 

Dayton (September 3, Alumni Field)
– The Flyers finished the 2022 season with a 16-4-1 overall record and an 8-2 mark in the Atlantic 10. Dayton earned conference tournament wins over No. 7 seed Massachusetts (2-0) and No. 4 seed Davidson (1-0) before losing to top-seeded Saint Louis in the title match. WSU has gone 5-22-4 in 31 career meetings against Dayton. The Raiders fell to UD 2-0 on the road last year. Kiera Sarka held the Flyers scoreless in goal with a career-high four saves in the remaining 47 minutes. 

Akron (September 10, Alumni Field; non-conference finale)
– Akron recorded an overall record of 3-9-4 during the 2022 season, including a 2-7-2 mark against MAC opponents. The Zips went an improved 1-0-1 versus Horizon League competition, defeating Youngstown State 1-0 and playing to a 1-1 draw at Oakland. The Raiders took down Akron 3-0 in a road matchup during the 2021 season, tying the all-time series, 1-1-0. Current Raider Kaylin Helinski logged 90 minutes in the shutout victory.

Green Bay (September 14, Green Bay, WI; conference opener)
– The Phoenix ended the 2022 season with an overall record of 3-11-2. Green Bay went 1-7-2 in HL action, including a 4-1 loss at Wright State. Lauren Borchert, Lena Jenssen, Elise Canter, and Olga Massombo scored goals for the Raiders in the League win, while Jessika Seward contributed with three saves. The all-time series is in favor of WSU, 20-6-5.

Youngstown State (September 21, Alumni Field) 
– Last season, Youngstown State compiled a 9-8-3 record and a 5-3-2 mark in the Horizon League. The Raiders collected a 2-0 shutout victory at YSU in the 2022 regular season but dropped a 2-1 contest to the Penguins in the conference tournament quarterfinals. Youngstown State eventually fell to No. 1 seed Milwaukee in the Horizon League Championship finals. WSU holds a substantial advantage in the all-time series, leading 22-2-3.  

Robert Morris (September 24, Moon Township, PA)
– The Colonials finished the 2022 season 7-7-4 overall and 1-7-2 in HL play. Wright State has gone 4-1-0 versus RMU in the all-time series. A two-goal performance by Elise Canter led the Raiders to a 2-1 victory over Robert Morris on the road last season. 

Oakland (September 30, Alumni Field)
– Oakland went 8-4-7 overall a year ago, which included a 5-2-3 record against Horizon League competition. The Golden Grizzlies had their season end against No. 6 seed IUPUI in the HL quarterfinals. Wright State has lost its last three meetings versus OU and trails 4-7-1 in the all-time series. 

IUPUI (October 5, Alumni Field)
– The Jaguars compiled a 9-4-6 overall record and a 4-3-3 mark in the Horizon League last year. Wright State and IUPUI played to a 2-2 draw in the lone matchup between the two programs in 2022. Marcella Sizer netted both goals for WSU in the tie. The Raiders will enter the October meeting in front 8-3-1 in the all-time series.

Milwaukee (October 8, Milwaukee, WI)
– A season ago, the Panthers claimed their seventh regular-season championship in the past eight years and earned their fifth-straight automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by winning the Horizon League Tournament Championship. MKE fell in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament to Michigan State in double overtime. Wright State was the lone HL program to beat Milwaukee in 2022, as the Raiders won 3-2 at Alumni Field, aided by goals from current Raiders’ Ashley Vaughn and Lauren Borchert. The all-time series sits 29-10-6 in favor of Milwaukee. 

Detroit Mercy (October 12, Alumni Field)
– Detroit Mercy went 6-10-1 overall and 4-6 in HL play in 2022. The Raiders fell to UDM 3-2 on the road last season. Lauren Borchert and Marcella Sizer scored goals in the loss. WSU has gone 16-14-5 in 35 career meetings against the Titans.

Purdue Fort Wayne (October 15, Fort Wayne, IN)
– The Mastodons finished the 2022 season with an overall record of 9-4-6 and a 5-1-4 mark in Horizon League action. Wright State and Purdue Fort Wayne tied 1-1 last season. Katie McGuinness netted an equalizer in the 89th minute of the draw, which was the first goal of her collegiate career. WSU holds a 9-1-2 edge in the all-time series.

Cleveland State (October 21, Cleveland, OH)
– Cleveland State compiled a 7-6-4 overall record and a 4-4-2 mark in conference play during the 2022 campaign. The Raiders settled for a 1-1 draw against CSU a year ago, highlighted by Marcella Sizer’s equalizer in the 77th minute. Wright State possesses a 13-6-2 advantage in the all-time series. 

Northern Kentucky (October 25, Alumni Field; regular-season finale)
– Northern Kentucky is coming off a 2-11-2 showing in 2022. Both of NKU’s wins transpired in conference play, as the Norse defeated IUPUI and Green Bay. The Raiders closed the 2022 regular season with a 2-1 victory at Northern Kentucky.
