University of Findlay golfer Justin Atkinson of Brookfield was the only player to finish under par in the Championship Division, and holds a two shot lead after Round 1 of the 2023 Northeast Ohio Amateur Championship at Windmill Lakes Golf Club.

Atkinson made a whopping seven birdies against five bogeys to shoot 68 on the par-70 Ravenna track.

“I got the putter rolling,” Atkinson said. “Made a lot of putts today. Made some bogeys but the putter is rolling really well so overall it was a good day.”

Six players shot even par, including defending champion Blake Solomon and 2019 champion Jack Herceg, both from Dublin, Ohio. Another five players stand at 1-over par 71.

In the Mid-Amateur Division for players age 25+, Vaughn Snyder of Canton, David Hilditch of Avon, and Zach Glassman Painesville share the lead at even par.

In the Senior Division, defending NOGA Senior Player of the Year Mark Borlin of Stow shot a 2-under par 68, making five birdies on the day including the first two holes of his round.

“It was a really solid round,” Borlin said. “I started off with birdies on 1 and 2 from a short distance. Just kept it in play all day and kept giving myself birdie chances. After a couple of errant tee shots, I was able to escape with par. Just a solid round.”

Borlin leads by two shots over Solon’s Marc Fried. Defending Senior champion Kurt Peterson of Bolivar is another shot back after a 71.
