Cavs Outlast Raptors

Cleveland Oh. – On a night where Donavan Mitchell shot the ball poorly, the Cavs got contributions from the rest of the team and won, 105- 102 over the Raptors.

The Cavs got contributions from all five starters as Darius Garland led the way with 24 points and 8 assist. Max Strus finished with 20 points (all of which came in the third quarter) and 11 rebounds. While Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley finished with 18 and 12, respectively. All that to cover for Donavan Mitchell shooting 4-17 and scoring 10 points.

The Cavs came out in the first half and were “searching” according to coach JB Bickerstaff. Down 10 at halftime, and having only scored 42 points, the Cavs came out in the third and scored 32 points and tightened their defense, holding the raptors to just 20 in the third. Strus, as mentioned, scored all of his 20 points in the third.

While he didn’t shoot well, Mitchell was able to assist and rebound for the Cavs as he saw Strus and Garland had it going. The real hero of the night was Tristan Thompson. The second stint with the Cavs, Thompson played 7 minutes at the end of the third and early in the fourth and turned the game from a tie game dog fight to a Cavs lead. His 7 minutes were the most productive minutes as he scored 4 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. All offensive. In the beginning of the fourth, the first possession, Thompson grabbed an offensive rebound and got it to Garland for a layup. Next play down, he grabbed an offensive rebound and got it to Strus for a three.

Hustle plays are contagious. When he was subbed out and Allen came back in, Allen immediately got an offensive rebound for a score. Those kinds of winning plays are why the Cavs felt it was necessary to bring Thompson back to the organization. The level of toughness and intensity Thompson brings is invaluable.

All in all, this was a gutsy win for the Cavs. They showed the ability to pick up their star when he wasn’t shooting well, but they also showed toughness in bouncing back from a tough loss to the Lakers. Playing on a back-to-back, the Cavs gutted out a win against the pesky Raptors.

They look to be more rested and come out strong when they take on the Hawks at home on Tuesday in the In Season Play In Tournament. The Cavs need to win the game Tuesday to have any chance at being the wild card and potentially going to Vegas. But more importantly, the Cavs need to beat the Hawks. The Cavs have lost the last two games to the Hawks dating back to last season. Even If the Cavs can’t make it to the next phase of the tournament, they want to start building good habits and beating good opponents. The Hawks present that opportunity. The Cavs got the first test beating the Raptors, now they need to continue and beat the Hawks.

Solid showing in Game 3 victory

Allen recorded a double-double for the fourth time over his last five playoff appearances, and the star big man continues to make a sizable impact on both ends of the court for Cleveland. With five double-doubles in seven playoff outings so far, Allen’s two-way play will be huge for the Cavaliers in their quest to even the series Sunday.

Massive stat line in Game 3

Mobley was deemed a game-time call for Friday’s game due to a left ankle sprain, an injury that prevented him from suiting up in Game 2 of the series, but the big man made his return and made his presence felt on both ends of the court. This was his second consecutive double-double in the series, and Mobley’s contributions were massive from a fantasy perspective since he recorded at least three tallies in each of the five major categories. Perhaps more importantly, Mobley didn’t show any ill effects of the ankle injury, and unless he suffers a setback over the weekend, he should be ready to go for Game 4 on Sunday.

Surpasses 40-point mark again

Mitchell surpassed the 40-point mark for the second game in a row, but unlike Tuesday, this time the Cavaliers pulled out the win thanks to a dominant effort on both ends of the court. Mitchell turned it up late in the game and made a couple of key shots down the stretch when the Pacers were threatening to make a comeback. Mitchell is averaging 41.3 points per game in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. He should have a key role for the Cavaliers as they attempt to even the series Sunday on the road.

Former NBA Star Reveals He Cried After Cavs-Knicks Trade

J.R. Smith was once among the best role players in the NBA.

The 2013 6th Man of The Year last played during the 2019-20 season when he was a member of the Los Angeles Lakers.

In a recent interview with Carmelo Anthony’s 7PM in Brooklyn, Smith revealed that he cried when he was traded from the New York Knicks to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Smith: “I ain’t gonna lie bro, I cried… All I could really fathom at the time was it was over. Like, damn, this is my best friend… This was like a real live end to an era.”

Smith had helped Anthony and the Knicks reach the second round of the 2013 NBA playoffs.

While he was a fan-favorite in New York, Smith went on to win the 2016 NBA Championship with LeBron James and the Cavs.

They beat the Golden State Warriors to complete the biggest comeback in NBA Finals history.

Smith was initially the 18th pick in the 2004 NBA Draft out of high school.

He played 16 years for the Cleveland Cavaliers, New York Knicks, New Orleans Hornets, Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Lakers.

The 39-year-old had career averages of 12.4 points, 3.1 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.0 steals per contest while shooting 41.9% from the field and 37.3% from the three-point range in 977 games.
