COVID vaccine fatigue: Study explores why many are refusing booster shots
Because the world continues to maneuver towards a post-pandemic life — and because the World Well being Group (WHO) lately predicted that COVID-19 will finish in 2023 as a public well being emergency — Individuals might have reached a state of “vaccine fatigue,” knowledge suggests.
A current examine printed within the journal Nature Drugs, led by researchers from the Medical College of Vienna, surveyed 6,357 folks in Austria and Italy. They discovered that respondents’ “readiness to get vaccinated,” on a scale of 0 to 10, was comparatively low — roughly 5.8 in Italy and 5.3 in Austria.
The members answered questions on vaccine-related prices, communication, incentives, rising variants of the virus and vaccination necessities.
What’s vaccine fatigue?
The American Medical Affiliation defines vaccine fatigue as “unwillingness or inaction towards vaccine data or instruction resulting from perceived burden or burnout.”
COVID VACCINES ARE NOT NEEDED FOR HEALTHY KIDS AND TEENS, SAYS WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION
Within the U.S., proof of vaccine fatigue may be seen within the dwindling numbers of individuals getting boosters for COVID vaccines.
When the vaccines first grew to become accessible in the summertime of 2021, there was a wave of aid — even enthusiasm in some corners — as folks lined as much as get the shot. By Sept. 1, 2022, 79.2% of Individuals had gotten a minimum of one dose and 67.8% had accomplished their full major sequence of vaccines, per the Facilities for Illness Management and Prevention (CDC).
There’s a sharp drop-off, nevertheless, in the case of booster numbers.
As of March 21, 2023, solely 16.4% of Individuals had been present with their up to date (bivalent) booster dose, CDC knowledge exhibits.
Many elements can result in fatigue
Low belief in medical establishments, governments and vaccinations was a standard thread within the examine findings, notably round vaccine mandates.
“Respondents in each nations reported excessive ranges of pandemic fatigue and confirmed low to medium ranges of belief in parliament and authorities,” the examine authors wrote in a dialogue of the findings.
PRIOR COVID INFECTION PROVIDES JUST AS MUCH PROTECTION AS VACCINES, NEW STUDY FINDS
Dr. Shana Johnson, a bodily drugs and rehabilitation doctor in Scottsdale, Arizona, was not concerned within the examine however reviewed the findings.
“A pertinent discovering was that vaccine mandates confirmed no seen results on the chance to get vaccinated, however strongly affected the belief in vaccines negatively,” she instructed Fox Information Digital.
“Per the examine, a simpler technique to encourage vaccination is to advertise group spirit whereas retaining medical alternative,” she added.
Individuals are uninterested in listening to about new variants, boosters and vaccine updates, mentioned one medical director.
Some refuse the vaccine just because they imagine they don’t want it — and in some circumstances, they could be proper, Dr. Johnson famous.
“The COVID virus’ virulence or hazard varies tremendously primarily based on age and danger elements,” she mentioned. “It isn’t the identical illness in a 10-year-old, a 40-year-old and a 70-year-old. If you’re younger with no underlying medical circumstances and your previous COVID an infection prompted a stuffy nostril for 2 days, you aren’t going to see an excellent want for repeat vaccination.”
However, for these over 65 with danger elements for extreme illness, the necessity is far clearer, Dr. Johnson mentioned.
Dr. Norman B. Gaylis, medical director on the Immunotherapy Middle of South Florida and an professional on lengthy COVID, mentioned there are quite a few reviews and research indicating that folks haven’t solely misplaced curiosity in being vaccinated, however are additionally uninterested in listening to about new variants, boosters and vaccine updates.
“For my part, some folks have misplaced religion in being protected by vaccination for a lot of causes,” he instructed Fox Information Digital.
“For instance, they could have gotten COVID after getting vaccinated, or they could have heard conflicting viewpoints and controversies about ample safety or hostile unwanted side effects of vaccination.”
Dr. Gaylis added, “Sadly, many individuals imagine that COVID is not a severe well being menace they need to be involved about.”
Vaccine fatigue varies by group
The Medical College of Vienna examine discovered that sure teams tended to show greater ranges of fatigue than others.
Those that had by no means acquired any COVID vaccine responded that they’d refuse the vaccine in almost all offered situations, the researchers acknowledged.
Individuals who had acquired a minimum of one or two vaccine doses appeared more likely to conform to get a booster if supplied optimistic incentives.
CDC IDENTIFIES POSSIBLE ‘SAFETY CONCERN’ FOR CERTAIN PEOPLE RECEIVING COVID VACCINES
Those that had gotten three or extra doses had been essentially the most open to returning for boosters — in the event that they had been accessible, simply accessible and advisable by consultants.
Combating COVID vaccine fatigue
For sufferers who’ve COVID fatigue and not imagine they want vaccines, Dr. Gaylis recommends that well being care professionals assist them weigh the professionals and cons earlier than recommending a personalized remedy or prevention plan.
“They need to talk about the medical proof in favor of vaccination for defense and immunity,” he mentioned.
“Many individuals imagine that COVID is not a severe well being menace they need to be involved about.”
The findings from the Vienna examine recognized a number of approaches to countering vaccine fatigue.
“We advocate providing tailored vaccines at totally different occasions of yr, retaining low-threshold entry to vaccinations and making certain that folks take consultants’ views under consideration with the intention to preserve excessive ranges of immunization among the many inhabitants in future,” mentioned lead researcher Tanja Stamm, professor and head of the Institute for Outcomes Analysis on the Medical College of Vienna, in a dialogue of the findings.
WHY ANTIBIOTICS MAY NOT HELP PATIENTS SURVIVE THEIR VIRAL INFECTIONS: NEW RESEARCH
Communication campaigns usually are not as efficient as they as soon as had been, the examine additionally suggests — and optimistic incentives could possibly be used to influence sure teams who could also be immune to extra vaccine, it additionally signifies.
Dr. Marc Siegel, scientific professor of drugs at NYU Langone Medical Middle and a Fox Information medical contributor, agreed that vaccine fatigue can be a major issue going ahead.
“I believe the principle methods must be to focus on the group that’s already boosted, to flow into data on the vaccine results waning, and to share current research exhibiting that boosters lower the influence of lengthy COVID,” he instructed Fox Information Digital.
Along with providing incentives, Siegel additionally mentioned he helps minimizing the associated fee to acquire vaccines and upgrading the vaccines so that they higher match the newest variant.
“Vaccine mandates confirmed no seen results on the chance to get vaccinated.”
Listening to folks’s fears can also be key, mentioned Dr. Johnson.
“Those that haven’t studied drugs for the previous 20 years don’t course of the COVID science the identical,” she instructed Fox Information Digital. “We have to hear, perceive their perspective and meet them there in our discussions.”
Examine didn’t tackle pure antibodies
One factor the Vienna vaccine fatigue examine was not capable of tackle was the presence of COVID antibodies in those that have been vaccinated or have had the virus, Dr. Gaylis famous.

“A lot of these people might have ample ranges of antibodies, and in the event that they do, they could not want extra vaccination,” he mentioned.
“It is a query that, as a medical skilled having handled over 2,000 sufferers with COVID and lengthy COVID, I can not reply.”
“I can say there are teams [of people] that should critically take into account getting vaccinations and boosters, similar to high-risk people with diabetes, weight problems and the immunocompromised,” he added.

FDA bans red food dye due to potential cancer risk
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has officially banned red dye — called Red 3, or Erythrosine — from foods, dietary supplements and ingested medicines, as reported by the Associated Press on Wednesday.
Food manufacturers must remove the dye from their products by January 2027, while drug manufacturers will have until January 2028 to do so, AP stated.
Any foods imported into the U.S. from other countries will also be subject to the new regulation.
RED FOOD DYE COULD SOON BE BANNED AS FDA REVIEWS PETITION
“The FDA is taking action that will remove the authorization for the use of FD&C Red No. 3 in food and ingested drugs,” said Jim Jones, the FDA’s deputy commissioner for human foods, in a statement.
“Evidence shows cancer in laboratory male rats exposed to high levels of FD&C Red No.3,” he continued. “Importantly, the way that FD&C Red No. 3 causes cancer in male rats does not occur in humans.”
The synthetic dye, which is made from petroleum, is used as a color additive in food and ingested drugs to give them a “bright cherry-red color,” according to an online statement from the FDA.
The petition to ban the dye cited the Delaney Clause, which states that the agency cannot classify a color additive as safe if it has been found to induce cancer in humans or animals.
The dye was removed from cosmetics nearly 35 years ago due to potential cancer risk.

“This is a welcome, but long overdue, action from the FDA: removing the unsustainable double standard in which Red 3 was banned from lipstick but permitted in candy,” said Dr. Peter Lurie, director of the group Center for Science in the Public Interest, which led the petition effort, as reported by AP.
Dr. Marc Siegel, clinical professor of medicine at NYU Langone Health and Fox News senior medical analyst, applauded the FDA’s ban.
“It was a long time coming,” he told Fox News Digital. “It’s been more than 30 years since it was banned from cosmetics in the U.S. due to evidence that it is carcinogenic in high doses in lab rats. There needs to be a consistency between what we put on our skin and what we put into our mouths.”
“There needs to be a consistency between what we put on our skin and what we put into our mouths.”
Siegel said he believes the FDA’s decision could be tied to the incoming new head of the Department of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
“They knew it would have happened anyway under RFK Jr.,” he said. “It is already banned or severely restricted in Australia, Japan and the European Union.”
The food additive also “drew kids in” to a diet of empty calories and ultraprocessed foods, Siegel added.
“It has also been linked to behavioral issues in children, including ADHD.”
Nearly 3,000 foods are shown to contain Red No. 3, according to Food Scores, a database of foods compiled by the Environmental Working Group.

The National Confectioners Association provided the below statement to Fox News Digital.
“Food safety is the number one priority for U.S. confectionery companies, and we will continue to follow and comply with FDA’s guidance and safety standards.”
The petition to remove Red No. 3 from foods, supplements and medications was presented in 2022 by the Center for Science in the Public Interest and 23 other organizations and scientists.

As bird flu spreads, CDC recommends faster 'subtyping' to catch more cases
As cases of H5N1, also known as avian flu or bird flu, continue to surface across the U.S., safety precautions are ramping up.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on Thursday its recommendation to test hospitalized influenza A patients more quickly and thoroughly to distinguish between seasonal flu and bird flu.
The accelerated “subtyping” of flu A in hospitalized patients is in response to “sporadic human infections” of avian flu, the CDC wrote in a press release.
ONE STATE LEADS COUNTRY IN HUMAN BIRD FLU WITH NEARLY 40 CONFIRMED CASES
“CDC is recommending a shortened timeline for subtyping all influenza A specimens among hospitalized patients and increasing efforts at clinical laboratories to identify non-seasonal influenza,” the agency wrote.
“Clinicians and laboratorians are reminded to test for influenza in patients with suspected influenza and, going forward, to now expedite the subtyping of influenza A-positive specimens from hospitalized patients, particularly those in an intensive care unit (ICU).”
LOUISIANA REPORTS FIRST BIRD FLU-RELATED HUMAN DEATH IN US
The goal is to prevent delays in identifying bird flu infections and promote better patient care, “timely infection control” and case investigation, the agency stated.
These delays are more likely to occur during the flu season due to high patient volumes, according to the CDC.

Health care systems are expected to use tests that identify seasonal influenza A as a subtype – so if a test comes back positive for influenza A but negative for seasonal influenza, that is an indicator that the detected virus might be novel.
“Subtyping is especially important in people who have a history of relevant exposure to wild or domestic animals [that are] infected or possibly infected with avian influenza A (H5N1) viruses,” the CDC wrote.
In an HHS media briefing on Thursday, the CDC confirmed that the public risk for avian flu is still low, but is being closely monitored.

The agency spokesperson clarified that this accelerated testing is not due to bird flu cases being missed, as the CDC noted in its press release that those hospitalized with influenza A “probably have seasonal influenza.”
Niels Riedemann, MD, PhD, CEO and founder of InflaRx, a German biotechnology company, said that understanding these subtypes is an “important step” in better preparing for “any potential outbreak of concerning variants.”
“It will also be important to foster research and development of therapeutics, including those addressing the patient’s inflammatory immune response to these types of viruses – as this has been shown to cause organ injury and death during the COVID pandemic,” he told Fox News Digital.
Since 2022, there have been 67 total human cases of bird flu, according to the CDC, with 66 of those occurring in 2024.
The CDC recommends that people avoid direct contact with wild birds or other animals that are suspected to be infected. Those who work closely with animals should also wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
