Joel Klatt reacts to the Penn State’s 41-12 win over the Auburn Tigers and the way Offensive Coordinator Mike Yurcich has helped repair Penn State’s operating sport.
Penn State operating again Nick Singleton is on an ascending path to school soccer stardom.
The Nittany Lions’ freshman again ran throughout Auburn in a dominant 41-12 victory Saturday. He totaled 124 yards and two touchdowns on the bottom, guiding Penn State to a press release win over a top quality SEC opponent.
James Franklin’s program has not had a 1,000-yard rusher since Miles Sanders did it in 2018. Now, three video games into the 2022 marketing campaign, it appears to be like like Singleton is properly on his method to conducting the feat.
“Penn State now has mounted their foremost situation,” FOX Sports activities school soccer analyst Joel Klatt stated. “They now have a run sport to lean on, and that run sport’s identify is Nick Singleton.”
Klatt listed Penn State as one among three groups with “quiet assertion wins” on the newest episode of his new podcast, “The Joel Klatt Show.“
Joel Klatt reacts to the Penn State’s 41-12 win over the Auburn Tigers and the way Offensive Coordinator Mike Yurcich has helped repair Penn State’s operating sport.
“That is a kind of uncommon moments in school soccer the place the man who must be the man in his first yr truly is the man,” Klatt stated on Singleton.
With regards to rating school soccer blue bloods, Penn State is actually close to the highest of the listing. Franklin has compiled a 94-49 file since arriving at PSU in 2014, which incorporates three double-digit win seasons. Nonetheless, the previous two seasons haven’t lived as much as program requirements, because the Nittany Lions went 4-5 within the COVID-shortened 2020 season and adopted that with a 7-6 mark final yr.
Senior quarterback Sean Clifford has taken a lot of the blame for this system’s shortcomings, regardless of being a four-year starter who has thrown for greater than 8,500 yards and 67 touchdowns throughout his profession.
Though Clifford and the Penn State offense have had their struggles over the previous two seasons, a lot of that may be attributed to the shortage of a constant speeding presence. Now, with Singleton main the best way, this offense appears to be like to have a extra balanced assault, which ought to assist soften opposing defenses and permit them to be extra multidimensional.
“That is the right situation for Sean Clifford,” Klatt stated. “He’s the kind of quarterback that may be actually good for you in the event you’re not requiring him to be good.”
Penn State is about to play host to Central Michigan (1-2) and Northwestern (1-2) earlier than establishing a possible Large Ten showdown with the No. 4-ranked Michigan Wolverines on Oct. 15 in Ann Arbor.
“That’s gonna be an important sport,” Klatt stated. ‘I absolutely anticipate Penn State goes into Michigan 5-0, and I absolutely anticipate Michigan – if they can play like they’ve been enjoying – may even be undefeated heading into that sport. That units up a mammoth sport.”
One other staff that notched a “quiet assertion win” in Week 3 was the Washington Huskies. Kalen DeBoer’s squad ran throughout a Michigan State staff that had outscored its first two opponents 87-13.
Washington QB Michael Penix dissected the Spartans’ protection, finishing 24 of 40 passes for 397 yards and 4 touchdowns, whereas the Huskies’ protection shut down the Spartans’ speeding assault.
“We’ve failed to recollect how good Michael Penix was when he’s wholesome,” Klatt stated of the Huskies’ senior signal-caller. “You’ve a coach and QB reunited … and it’s working.”
Washington Huskies followers storm the sector after upsetting the No. 11 Michigan State Spartans.
DeBoer served as Indiana’s offensive coordinator in 2019, the place Penix began beneath middle and loved a profession yr, guiding the Hoosiers to a powerful 8-4 mark and a spot within the Gator Bowl.
The previous Hoosier carved up the Spartans’ protection that season as properly, throwing for 286 yards and three scores in a 40-31 shootout, which resulted in a loss.
Now reunited together with his former OC in Washington, Penix is enjoying pretty much as good as any signal-caller in school soccer by three weeks.
“Michael Penix … good on you, sir,” Klatt stated. “That was an important assertion win.”
Klatt’s third staff that he referred to as out in Monday’s podcast for registering a quiet assertion win was the Kansas Jayhawks.
Junior quarterback Jalon Daniels threw for 158 yards and three touchdowns, whereas including 123 yards and two scores on the bottom as Kansas improved to 3-0 for the primary time since 2009 with a powerful 48-30 win over Houston on Saturday.
The Jayhawks’ win additionally marked the primary time since 2007 that this system received back-to-back street video games.
“It’s arduous to overstate how wonderful that is,” Klatt stated on Kansas’ undefeated begin. “Lance Leipold is doing God’s work in Lawrence, Kansas.”
oel Klatt praises the Kansas Jayhawks’ 3-0 begin and explains how Lance Leipold’s program rebuild is beginning to present dividends.
Leipold arrived at Kansas final season after serving as the top coach at Buffalo from 2015-20. He took over a Kansas program that was coming off a winless season (0-9) in 2020 and went 2-10 in his first season on the helm, which makes this yr’s 3-0 begin much more spectacular. Nonetheless, Klatt stated followers ought to have seen this scorching begin coming.
“This didn’t come out of nowhere,” Klatt stated. “There’s a sample of how you are taking a program that’s within the weeds and the way you carry them out.
“You lose large, and in the event you’re doing the best issues and getting higher, then you definitely’ll ultimately lose small. Everybody simply desires to get to that time of the place you’re profitable, however what they don’t perceive is that there’s a step earlier than that.”
Regardless of being simply 1-8 in Large 12 play final season, the Jayhawks did pull off a memorable upset win over Texas towards the backend of their schedule. Kansas adopted that sport up with a detailed 31-28 loss to TCU and a 34-28 defeat to West Virginia.
“We must always have identified one thing was brewing,” Klatt stated. “They took the steps essential to get to the place they’re beginning to go, which is from profitable small to probably profitable large.”
Kansas is about to tackle Duke in a battle of undefeated packages Saturday at 12 p.m. ET.

Washington State men’s basketball head coach David Riley could point to a few factors that led to Gonzaga pulling away from the Cougars during the second half of Saturday night’s showdown at the McCarthey Athletic Center.
For starters, the Bulldogs’ 15-5 scoring run to start the second half certainly didn’t help the Cougs’ cause. Neither did Ryan Nembhard, who came out of the halftime break even more refreshed after sitting on the bench for the final 9:34 of the first half due to foul trouble. Turnovers and miscues on the defensive end of the floor also started to pile up for WSU, which led by six points in the first half only to trail by three at the break and fall behind by 21 in the second half while the Zags nailed 10 3-pointers and scored 20 points off 16 turnovers.
Consider Saturday night, then, a perfect storm for the Bulldogs (14-4, 5-0 WCC). Led by Graham Ike’s 21 points, Gonzaga pulled away for an 88-75 victory over its in-state rival in a thriller from the Kennel.
Here’s what Riley had to say after the game.
“It was a hard-fought game, and I feel like we had it slip away from us early in that second half where we didn’t stay connected as much, and I personally didn’t do a good enough job of having us ready for the fight. They got some 50-50 balls. They got a couple offensive rebounds, just some toughness plays that second half that hurt us. And that comes down to, we have game plan stuff, we’re gonna have X’s and O’s, we’re gonna have great plays from different players and bad plays from different players, but that fight for 40 minutes, I think, was the difference, and they came out with a little more fire than us.”
“He did a good job with their pace. I think he gets them up the floor really well. I felt like it was a lot of factors that second half, and he played a part in that and started isolating some of our bigs when we made a couple of adjustments. [Nembhard is a] good player.”
“A couple of execution errors. I think one of them we didn’t have a ball screen right, one of them we didn’t order our post defense right. Kind of going into the half that was our thing, when things get tough, or they throw in a 25-second possession, we got to execute all 30 seconds of the shot clock. And I think it was more just cover stuff. We didn’t have that many space cadet errors. I think it was more just kind of one guy doing something that wasn’t exactly right in coverage.”

The Gonzaga men’s basketball team pulled away from Washington State for an 88-75 victory in the first meeting between the in-state rivals in over a decade.
Graham Ike led the way with 21 points on 8-for-11 from the field, Nolan Hickman added 19 points and the Bulldogs (14-4, 5-0 WCC) earned their fifth straight win to open league play by putting the Cougars (13-5, 3-2 WCC) away early in the second half. After ending the first half on an 8-2 scoring run, the Zags came out of the second half with a sense of urgency on both ends, sparking a 15-5 scoring run to make it a double-digit margin.
Here’s what Gonzaga head coach Mark Few had to say after the game.
“I just told them, ‘hey, we’re in a we’re in a battle. It’s a great game. Both teams are competing really hard, and we’re at our best when we’re in attack mode.’ And they did a great job of taking the message and I thought we really went out and turned defense into offense, and we knew that was going to be a big key for us. [The Cougars] are hard to guard, they’re big and they’re physical, and [WSU coach David Riley] does a really lot of nice stuff on on offense that exploits mismatches. But our guys battled tonight, so I was really proud of them.”
“They played great. I told them that in the locker room that that was huge. We haven’t really had to do that all year. And this guy [Nolan Hickman] stepped up. He was amazing tonight. I mean, seven boards … defensively in there, battling in the post. I mean, he did a lot of stuff that, as I said, he’s now, he set a high standard, so kind of be counting on that moving forward, but he and Dusty [Stromer] both really helped during that stretch and [Khalif Battle] and obviously having Ben [Gregg] and then Graham was rock solid all night.”
“I thought our effort and our making plays, I thought it was definitely up there [with the best of the season], and just the physicality that it took. Because, again, they’re so much bigger than us at several of those spots. And again, you just don’t see the post-up thing like this, where your guards are getting constantly posted. But so in that way, we fought, we were physical and kind of had to navigate our way through a lot of different actions. There’s staggers and some curls and some switches and all that. For the most part, we did pretty good.”
The Washington Nationals have continued to invest into the pitching staff with another free agency move on Saturday.
Shared on social media, the Nationals announced that they had agreed to terms with relief pitcher Jorge Lopez on a one-year contract. That deal will be worth $3 million plus incentives per Jon Heyman.
This is the third pitcher that Washington has signed this offseason, with Michael Soroka brought in as a free agent and Trevor Williams receiving a new deal to say.
They also added another reliever, Evan Reifert, as a Rule 5 draft pick from the Tampa Bay Rays.
Lopez made headlines last year with his infamous exit from the New York Mets. He caused a stir after a loss when he referred to himself as ‘the worst teammate on the worst team in baseball.’
For a lot of players, that might spell an end to the season. The fastball-heavy reliever was able to bounce back. He was released and then signed a minor league contract with the Chicago Cubs.
The 31-year-old came back from controversy as strong as ever, posting a 2.03 ERA over the final 26.2 innings of work.
With the loss of Kyle Finnegan, Lopez makes sense as a potential replacement at closer. He does have some closing experience, but has not been his main role for much of his career.
That season, 2022, was the year he made his first and only All-Star team.
He is a ground ball machine that loves to force bad contact. Keeping him in a situational role could also be a smart idea, given that he struggles against lefties.
No matter how he is used, this is another good signal that the Nationals don’t want to throw any season away.
