Justin Schultz's OT goal propels Kraken past Flyers
Justin Schultz scored at 2:35 of overtime as the Seattle Kraken rallied to defeat the visiting Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 Friday night.
Fellow defenseman Vince Dunn scored in regulation and Oliver Bjorkstrand had two assists for Seattle, which won its fourth in a row and extended its point streak to eight games (6-0-2). Goaltender Joey Daccord, making his eighth start in nine games with Philipp Grubauer out with a lower-body injury, made 27 saves.
Travis Konecny scored a short-handed goal for the Flyers, who, despite the defeat, have earned points in 12 of their past 13 games (8-1-4). Goalie Carter Hart, who played junior hockey in nearby Everett, Wash., stopped 27 of 29 shots.
With the Flyers needing a line change in overtime, Bjorkstrand controlled the puck at the top of the offensive zone. He sent a pass down the right wing for Schultz, who tipped the puck between Hart’s pads for the winner.
Konecny opened the scoring at 16:21 of the first period. Teammate Scott Laughton forced a turnover in the Philadelphia zone and then took a pass from Travis Sanheim to start a two-on-one rush with Konecny. Dunn got a stick on Laughton’s pass across the top of Seattle’s crease, but Konecny was able to recover the puck just below the goal line and reach back to stuff the puck just inside the left post as Daccord was prone on the ice.
The Kraken tied the score on the power play at 5:45 of the third. Alex Wennberg won a faceoff in the offensive zone and Bjorkstrand shoveled the puck back to Dunn at the left point. Dunn’s slap shot beat a screened Hart to make it 1-1.
The Flyers dropped to 1-0-1 on their four-game Western swing, which concludes with games Sunday at Calgary and Tuesday at Edmonton.
The Kraken, meanwhile, are set to play host to Vegas on Monday in the NHL’s Winter Classic at T-Mobile Park.
Kraken forward Andre Burakovsky returned after missing 29 of the previous 30 games with a pair of lower-body injuries. It was his first game since Dec. 7 and his second since Oct. 21. Burakovsky played on Seattle’s second line with Jared McCann and Wennberg.
The Flyers’ John Tortorella coached his 1,500th NHL game. Tortorella moved into sole possession of 10th place on the league’s career victories list Thursday with No. 723 in a 4-1 decision at Vancouver.

Here’s What Dan Wilson and Julio Rodriguez Had to Say After Seattle Mariners Win Over White Sox Monday
CHICAGO – The Seattle Mariners won their fourth consecutive game on Monday night, beating the Chicago White Sox 5-1 at Rate Field. Seattle is now 27-19 and remains in first place in the American League West. Chicago fell to 14-34, the worst record in the American League.
The M’s have won all four games to start this 10-game road trip through San Diego, Chicago and Houston.
Luis Castillo earned the win on the mound after tossing seven scoreless innings. He allowed just three hits and no walks while striking out five. He’s now 4-3 with a 3.20 ERA.
Offensively, Jorge Polanco had an RBI single in the top of the third and Julio Rodriguez broke the game open in the top of the eighth with a grand slam. It was the second grand slam of his career and his eighth homer of the year.
After the game, Mariners on SI caught up with skipper Dan Wilson and Rodriguez to talk about the win.
Dan Wilson on Castillo’s performance:
You know, great ballgame tonight. I think when you look at the outing that Castillo turned in, you know, giving us seven full innings there, really, really just attacked the zone. I thought his two-seamer was really good tonight. When you look at an outing like this, you know, he had everything going and attacked the zone, got ahead early, controlled the count on most of the hitters. And I thought that’s exactly what we needed from him. Great to get that from Luis.
On Jorge Polanco’s health, as he was pulled for a pinch-hitter against a left-handed pitcher again in the eighth inning:
He’s doing fine. You know, he’s coming along and right-handed swings are not too far behind, but we’re just taking it slow. And you know, his RBI single early was a big lift for us, I think. Getting on the board, getting us ahead, giving Luis (Castillo) a little bit of breathing room there on the mound was helpful. That was a big hit for us early in the game.
Julio Rodriguez on the team’s ability to add on late for a third straight game:
I mean, it’s huge, you know, especially, we’re on the road right now. Anything could happen later on and I feel like any run that we can add is big but, you know staying in the game…obviously it was a little slow at the beginning, but, you know, we kept having good at-bats, kept putting the ball in play, and we were able to make something happen later.
The Mariners will play the White Sox again on Tuesday at 4:40 p.m. PT, but there is rain in the forecast.

Cal Raleigh Just Joined Some of the Best Players in Seattle Mariners History with Latest Homer
The Seattle Mariners moved to 25-19 on the season with a big 4-1 victory over the San Diego Padres on Saturday night at Petco Park.
Tied 1-1 in the top of the seventh inning, Mariners’ catcher Cal Raleigh continued the great start to his year, hitting his 15th home run. The solo blast gave the M’s a 2-1 lead before they added on in the ninth courtesy of a two-run single by Dylan Moore.
For Raleigh, the home run put him on an exclusive list with some of the best players in franchise history.

The 28-year-old has taken another step forward offensively this year, raising his batting average to .253 and his on-base percentage to .379. Those are significantly higher than his career norms of .221/.304. He also has 31 RBIs this year to go along with five steals.
Add that to his work behind the plate, where he won the Gold Glove last year, and Raleigh is one of the most valuable players in baseball. ESPN MLB Insider Buster Olney recently told our own Refuse to Lose podcast that Raleigh is an early season MVP candidate.
