Here’s What Dan Wilson and Julio Rodriguez Had to Say After Seattle Mariners Win Over White Sox Monday

CHICAGO – The Seattle Mariners won their fourth consecutive game on Monday night, beating the Chicago White Sox 5-1 at Rate Field. Seattle is now 27-19 and remains in first place in the American League West. Chicago fell to 14-34, the worst record in the American League.
The M’s have won all four games to start this 10-game road trip through San Diego, Chicago and Houston.
Luis Castillo earned the win on the mound after tossing seven scoreless innings. He allowed just three hits and no walks while striking out five. He’s now 4-3 with a 3.20 ERA.
Offensively, Jorge Polanco had an RBI single in the top of the third and Julio Rodriguez broke the game open in the top of the eighth with a grand slam. It was the second grand slam of his career and his eighth homer of the year.
After the game, Mariners on SI caught up with skipper Dan Wilson and Rodriguez to talk about the win.
Dan Wilson on Castillo’s performance:
You know, great ballgame tonight. I think when you look at the outing that Castillo turned in, you know, giving us seven full innings there, really, really just attacked the zone. I thought his two-seamer was really good tonight. When you look at an outing like this, you know, he had everything going and attacked the zone, got ahead early, controlled the count on most of the hitters. And I thought that’s exactly what we needed from him. Great to get that from Luis.
On Jorge Polanco’s health, as he was pulled for a pinch-hitter against a left-handed pitcher again in the eighth inning:
He’s doing fine. You know, he’s coming along and right-handed swings are not too far behind, but we’re just taking it slow. And you know, his RBI single early was a big lift for us, I think. Getting on the board, getting us ahead, giving Luis (Castillo) a little bit of breathing room there on the mound was helpful. That was a big hit for us early in the game.
Julio Rodriguez on the team’s ability to add on late for a third straight game:
I mean, it’s huge, you know, especially, we’re on the road right now. Anything could happen later on and I feel like any run that we can add is big but, you know staying in the game…obviously it was a little slow at the beginning, but, you know, we kept having good at-bats, kept putting the ball in play, and we were able to make something happen later.
The Mariners will play the White Sox again on Tuesday at 4:40 p.m. PT, but there is rain in the forecast.

Seattle Mariners Injuries: When Luke Raley could return

SEATTLE – Seattle Mariners outfielder/first baseman Luke Raley began his rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma on Thursday night.
M’s Injury Updates: The latest on Logan Gilbert and Bryce Miller
Raley went 0 for 4 with a strikeout in what was his first game action since suffering a Grade 1 right oblique strain during batting practice on April 29.
Mariners general manager Justin Hollander said Raley will get an off day Friday before resuming his rehab assignment with Tacoma on Saturday and Sunday.
Hollander said Raley would then likely need some more games with Tacoma next week before the Mariners decide whether to active him from the injured list. Tacoma has an off day Monday before starting a six-game series at home on Tuesday.
Hollander said the biggest factor for Raley right now is readjusting to the timing of live pitching.
“He felt great after yesterday,” Hollander said. “… I talked to him earlier and he said everything felt great. But there is some timing that’s required if you’re going in swinging at live pitching for the first time in over a month now.”
Here are some other injury updates Hollander provided on Friday afternoon ahead of the Mariners’ series opener against the Cleveland Guardians.
• For updates on right-handers Logan Gilbert and Bryce Miller, click here.
• Outfielder Victor Robles remains on track to resume baseball activities in July and return to the Mariners in September, if all goes well.
Robles has been sidelined since dislocating his left shoulder and fracturing a bone in his shoulder while making a spectacular catch on April 6.
“When you’re immobilized for that long and you have that kind of traumatic injury to your shoulder, range of motion obviously decreases a lot, and we need to build that back and do it in a measured, responsible way,” Hollander said.
“If we push too hard, too fast, obviously there could be a reinjury. We don’t want to have that, so September is what we’re looking at.”
• Right-handed reliever Gregory Santos, who underwent a cleanup knee surgery on April 29, is in a throwing progression. Hollander said he’s still on track for a potential return in July, but noted “that’s a very rough, date of return.”
• Right-handed reliever Collin Snider, who was placed on the IL with a flexor strain in his pitching forearm on June 4, has resumed throwing again. Hollander said he’ll likely need another two to three weeks to ramp up again before returning.
• Left-handed reliever Tayler Saucedo, who is on the injured list at Triple-A Tacoma with a strained left lat, is “doing extremely well” in his throwing progression, Hollander said. The Mariners are targeting early July return for him.
“He said he feels great right now – better than he did in the spring in a lot of ways,” Hollander said.

FIFA Club World Cup kickoff in Seattle clouded by fears of ICE, border patrol presence

SEATTLE, Wash. – What should be a festive kickoff to the FIFA Club World Cup in Seattle this Sunday has instead sparked fear and uncertainty among some fans after U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) suggested on social media it would be involved in security at Club World Cup matches.
The Seattle Sounders will face Brazil’s Botafogo in a high-stakes match at Lumen Field on Sunday, marking one of the biggest games in the tournament. Seattle, considered the underdog, will host the match as the city prepares for a broader role in the global soccer spotlight ahead of next year’s FIFA World Cup.

But for some fans, the excitement is being overshadowed by rumors and social media posts suggesting increased immigration enforcement presence at matches — not just in Seattle, but across the country.
Earlier this week, CBP shared a now-deleted post on its official channels stating, “Let the games begin – the first FIFA Club World Cup games starts on June 14 in Miami. CBP will be suited and booted ready to provide security for the first round of games.” The post has since been taken down but is still being circulated by outlets such as FOX Sports 940 AM in Miami.
According to FOX’s affiliate in Florida, FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirmed CBP agents would be working alongside Miami-Dade Sheriff’s deputies to provide security for the matches in Florida.
Concerns grew further after reports that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents advised non-citizens to bring proof of legal status to the matches. While that advisory appears specific to Miami, the uncertainty has reached fans in Seattle as well.
Washington Governor Bob Ferguson addressed those concerns saying, “I’m not getting communication from the federal government about what they’re doing. I want to be very clear about that,” Ferguson said. “But we, of course, are very focused on the days ahead of us and being sure we’re doing everything we can to ensure the President does not take any legal action here in Washington.”
The office of Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell also responded, acknowledging awareness of the rumors. A spokesperson said the city has been in contact with Gov. Ferguson and Attorney General Nick Brown. The office emphasized that Seattle does not coordinate or assist federal agencies in immigration enforcement.
Ticket sales have also become a topic of conversation. Sunday’s match tickets are available for as low as $35. In comparison, a ticket to see Paris Saint-Germain — featuring some of the most well-known players in international soccer — costs around $117 – compared to $350 a year ago.
While it’s unclear whether the enforcement rumors are affecting sales, sports analyst Nico Moreno of Pulso Sports said the drop in demand isn’t surprising.
“I really thought a couple months back that it would be beyond that,” Moreno said. “But when I’m hearing that there’s basically a fire sale on tickets, that people are getting free tickets if they bought the 300 level — people are being brought down from 300 levels down — it makes me feel like it’s going to be a Portland vs. Sounders atmosphere.”
In a statement, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said, “U.S. Customs and Border Protection is committed to working with our local and federal partners to ensure the FIFA Club World Cup 26™ is safe for everyone involved, as we do with every major sporting event, including the Super Bowl. Our mission remains unchanged.”
Security concerns aren’t unprecedented. During the 2023 Copa América final, hundreds of fans breached Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, an incident attributed to a lack of security personnel.
FOX 13 Seattle reached out to Lumen Field for comment but has not yet received a response.
Seattle is set to host six matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and Sunday’s match is being seen as an early test of how the city handles international sporting events — both on and off the pitch.

MLS FIFA Club World Cup Pay Dispute
The Sounders are three days away from their first FIFA Club World Cup match, the biggest tournament in franchise history, as an ongoing disagreement between players and Major League Soccer casts a shadow over the event.
