San Francisco man says his cousin was in Gaza hospital during attack

Sharif Zakout of San Francisco says his cousin was seeking shelter at a Gaza hospital while it was under attack. He says he is holding out hope that his loved one survived the blast.

SAN FRANCISCO – The State Department blames a Palestinian terrorist organization for the misfired rocket, seriously damaging a hospital in Gaza.

The death toll is in the hundreds and a Bay Area man is fearing the worst.

Sharif Zakout of San Francisco told KTVU his cousin was seeking shelter at the hospital at the time of the attack.

“I’m hoping for the best for my family,” Zakout said. “I have no idea what’s happened to them.”

They’ve lost contact since the blast.

Zakout said he doesn’t know if they’ve survived.

“We are witnessing the genocide of my people and my family, dead center in it,” Zakout said.

Burned-out cars in the hospital parking lot marked the spot of the blast’s impact Wednesday.

Hamas blamed Israel.

Israel blamed a Palestinian terrorist group for a misfired rocket that hit their own territory.

President Joe Biden on board Air Force One Wednesday, said American intelligence supported Israel’s claims.

“Our Defense Department says it’s highly unlikely that its Israelis and it was a different footprint.”

Back in San Francisco, Zakout has been glued to online sources around the clock, tracking the war for nearly two weeks straight.

“I broke down a couple of times this morning and literally, I’m just tired of the tears at this point,” Zakout said. “It’s been so exhausting.”

All he can do is keep fighting for a cease fire, armed with his keyboard.

Zakout has worked to organize rallies, like Wednesday’s student walkout.

He has also designed signs in support of his loved ones whose futures are uncertain.

“I’ve unfortunately seen many names with my last name Zakout on the roster of names that have been found dead over the past week and a half,” Zakout said.

Long term, he wants all the different religious groups and political parties that live in the war zone to be able to live together in peace.

He believes the answer is forming a legitimate democracy.

3 California beaches closed as collapsed pier debris washes ashore

As detritus from the badly damaged Santa Cruz pier washes ashore, California State Parks officials are keeping three beaches closed. “Because of the amount of debris washing up onto the local beaches from the collapsing Santa Cruz municipal wharf,” Twin Lakes State Beach, Seabright State Beach and San Lorenzo Point will be closed until Dec. 30 at 6 a.m., Santa Cruz State Beaches said.

Seacliff State Beach and Rio Del Mar State Beach both reopened on Christmas morning, though visitors should take care: A high-surf warning is in effect along the coast from Thursday morning until Sunday afternoon. The National Weather Service is advising people to stay off piers and jetties.

About 150 feet of the Santa Cruz pier and an entire building housing a restroom broke off into the ocean on Monday amid battering waves. Three people working on the pier plunged into the water, where two needed rescue and a third was able to rescue themselves. Since then, pieces of the wharf have been washing onto local beaches. There is no estimated reopening for the wharf itself. Waves also pulled support piling from the Cayucos Pier about 160 miles south down the Central Coast. The end of the pier was already closed as it incurred damage during stormy conditions in February.

“Please be cautious when near the ocean, as debris from damage north of Capitola is making its way down the coastline,” the Capitola Police Department said. “Several large pilings from the Santa Cruz wharf have found their way to our shores, creating an extreme hazard. Please use caution if you are in the area.”
