As the “Mrs. Doubtfire” musical returns center stage to San Francisco today, critics are accusing the play of containing “tired, transphobic tropes.”

“Never once did we want to be asking the audience to laugh at the notion of a man putting on a dress,” actor Rob McClure, who plays Daniel Hillard in the live-action production, told SFGate.

“To see them celebrate a story that ends with a guy in drag getting his own children’s television show, they’re giving it a standing ovation, not realizing they’re cheering against their own preconceived biases… In a weird way, they’re showing their hand, that their issue isn’t drag, it’s homophobia. It’s that if the character isn’t gay, they’re not scared of it,” the Tony nominee added.

The initial premiere of the musical version of this beloved classic in Seattle was met with outrage from its audience, catapulting 457 offended viewers to sign a petition pushing for the removal of the production in 2019. The petition demands “the tired, transphobic tropes in Mrs. Doubtfire should be left in the past.” 

Inspired by the words of trans theater critic, Brin Solomon, the petition cited the premise of men wearing dresses as a “ridiculous” joke.

“The core premise of the man-in-a-dress joke is that it’s ridiculous and unnatural for a man to wear a dress. Because mainstream society, by and large, thinks of trans women as “men in dresses” instead of women, the man-in-a-dress joke perpetuates the idea that trans women are “unnatural” and fit for ridicule and scorn,” Solomon wrote.

A “New York Times” review of the musical brought cause for concern about the potential for the production’s revival to live up to that of the original 1993 film starring Robin Williams. 

The critique read that McClure’s version of Daniel was “more irritating than entertaining” and that the character’s behavior came off as “more creepy than kooky.”

According to SF Gate, McClure will once again be the lead of “Mrs. Doubtfire” in 2024.

The comedic classic was set in San Francisco, a fact that remains consistent in the remake, which will also highlight the local landmarks of Steiner Street and the Painted Ladies. 

“The musical language of the show was born out of what’s going on for the kids in the family… [The writers] thought that was an unexplored thing from the film, the real struggle that the family is going through, and the kids’ point of view of that messy divorce was something that could sing beautifully,” McClure said. 

The Broadway production will be at the Orpheum Theatre in San Francisco throughout the month of July.

CLEVELAND — The Guardians dropped Friday’s game but rebounded Saturday and look to take Sunday afternoon’s rubber match against the San Francisco Giants Sunday afternoon.

The Guardians, aided by Jhonkensy Noel’s three home run in his first eight games in the majors, have continued their power surge that has them in first place in the American League.

Carlos Carrasco takes the mound for the Guardians looking to lower his ERA below the 5.00 plateau in what has been a rough 2024 for the 37-year-old thus far.

Prior to Friday’s game, the Guardians completed a trade to boost their pitching depth by acquiring right-handed pitcher Spencer Howard from the Giants in exchange for cash considerations.

Howard will join the Guardians in the next few days. Right-handed pitcher Wes Parsons was designated for assignment.

Howard, 27, owns a career 6.93 ERA with 130 strikeouts in 139 innings across five seasons in the major leagues, which includes stints with the Philadelphia Phillies, Texas Rangers and the Giants this year. This season, he has a 5.63 ERA in 24 innings.

Howard was originally a second-round pick by the Phillies in the draft.

After this three-game series with the Giants at Progressive Field, the Guardians then travel to Detroit and Tampa for a seven-game road trip that will lead into the All-Star break.

Though SFPD pulled out all the stops to prevent the event, hosting a press conference a day prior and stationing officers around the park hours beforehand, they proved markedly more restrained than last year. 

When skaters finally dared to bomb away Saturday evening in front of a couple-hundred onlookers, scores of cops simply looked on. Some snapped pictures.

Compared to the chaos of the hill bomb in 2023—when cops kettled riotous crowds and arrested people en masse—it started out as a kinder, gentler hill bomb. 

For some of the skaters, the show of restraint softened their view of authorities. 

“It was, “Fuck the city,’” Urbieta told The Standard. “We’re loving the city now—but I don’t know how long it will last.”

A few minutes later, he fell at the bottom of the hill, writhing in pain on the ground as bystanders and volunteer medics rushed to help.

“I’m good, I’m good I’m good I promise,” he said. “It happens. It’s a part of this life.” 

When a nurse advised Urbieta not to skate the hill again, he responded, “Do you not know how skaters operate?”

Moments later he was speeding down the hill again. 

Not everyone was so lucky.

As the sun began to set, a skateboarder fell into a curb at the bottom of the hill, rolling multiple times and hitting his head. A hushed silence fell over the crowd of a couple hundred onlookers. Then, as paramedics carried him away on a stretcher, the skater threw his arms, prompting raucous cheers.
