A New Beginning in New Mexico – The Trek

Hey there fellow hikers! My title is Debbie and I’m new to The Trek, however to not the path. I’ve been part mountaineering and photographing the Pacific Crest Path for the previous 3 years and I’m taking one other crack at knocking off an enormous chunk of miles once more this yr. I’ve already accomplished a lot of the decrease elevation sections of the PCT, so I made a decision to move on over to New Mexico to strive my hand on the first part of the Continental Divide Path. This allowed a while to cross to attend for the unprecedented snowfall to soften on the PCT in Northern California, Oregon and Washington earlier than I get there. The thought was to get a head begin on build up my path legs after an extended and fairly sedentary winter season. This annual restart to develop into path hardy is likely one of the few disadvantages of part mountaineering.

Greatest laid plans…

The journey to the CDT from California was full of many obstacles. It began with my resolution to take the prepare to Lordsburg. I used to be simply returning final minute from a images journey in Alaska, so I simply grabbed my pack and kit and determined to seize my groceries in Lordsburg once I arrived at midday. Sadly, a freight prepare broke down on the tracks forward of us and it took hours to take away it. After portray grease on the rails by a crew with paint brushes, the freighter was dragged off the observe. By this time, we have been hours not on time and it snowballed later at each cease. I didn’t arrive at my vacation spot till after the one grocery retailer on the town was closed for the evening.

Now what?

I used to be scheduled for the shuttle to take me to the southern CDT monument the subsequent morning earlier than the shop opened. Scrambling to improvise, I packed the restricted meals I may collect from the tiny gasoline station comfort retailer subsequent door, the hiker field and a small resupply field stuffed with snacks that I had introduced for my subsequent leg. Being versatile is a lesson I’ve discovered properly throughout my via hikes of the final 3 years, so I chalked it up as a part of the journey and I used to be able to roll!!!
