Defendant who attacked judge in Nevada courtroom will be back in front of her today

A defendant who vaulted a defense table then leapt over a bench to attack a judge who was about to sentence him to prison last week will find himself in front of that same judge on Monday.

Last week, Deobra Redden appeared before Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus on a felony battery charge stemming from a baseball bat attack last year, and tried to convince the judge that he was a new person, turning around his violent past, The Associated Press reported.

When it became clear the argument was not working and Holthus was going to sentence Redden to prison, Redden charged toward the judge flying over the bench and slamming into Holthus before courtroom personnel could stop him.

Holthus was injured in the attack but was back to work the next day, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Redden had to be wrestled off Holthus by her clerk, Michael Lasso, and several court and jail officers, some of whom threw punches.

Lasso was treated for cuts on his hands and a marshal was hospitalized for a dislocated shoulder and a gash on his forehead, the AP reported.

The attack was caught on a courtroom camera and went viral on social media.

Redden will be in Holthus’ courtroom on Monday to hear the sentence the judge was going to impose last week. In a ruling handed down Friday, Holthus ordered Deobra Redden back to court on Monday “by any means necessary” to complete the sentencing hearing interrupted by his attack, the Review-Journal reported.

Redden was jailed on $54,000 bail in connection with the attack on Holthus. He refused to return to court the next day on the new charges, so a judge rescheduled his next appearance in that case for Tuesday.

Records show he faces charges including extortion, coercion with force and battery on a protected person, referring to the judge and the officers who came to her aid.

He will be before a different judge on Tuesday.

Judge continues Nevada ban on Kalshi sports markets

Judge continues Nevada ban on Kalshi sports markets

A state judge in Nevada extended a temporary ban on prediction market provider Kalshi’s sports-related contracts in the Silver State on Friday.

Judge Jason Woodbury in the First Judicial District Court told attorneys at a hearing in the Carson City courthouse that he would also grant the Nevada Gaming Control Board’s request to impose a preliminary injunction against Kalshi banning it from offering some of its prediction markets until a broader court case from the state gaming regulator could be resolved. He extended the temporary restraining order he first granted on March 20 by two weeks to sort out the language of the injunction, Reuters reported Friday.

The judge’s original temporary restraining order blocked Kalshi from offering sports, entertainment and election-related bets.

The judge said buying a contract on a baseball game on Kalshi was “indistinguishable” from placing a bet on a state gaming platform, Reuters reported.

“So I find based on the arguments that have been presented that it is a gaming activity that is prohibited for any non-licensee to engage in,” he said.

Spokespeople for Kalshi and the Nevada Gaming Control Board did not return requests for comments.

State regulators have moved to block prediction market providers in much of the U.S., arguing that these companies’ sports-related products appear to be gambling products that should be regulated at the state level. Kalshi and other prediction market providers argue that they are federally regulated designated contract markets offering swaps, a type of derivative product, and therefore are not subject to state regulators.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission, helmed by Chairman Mike Selig, has taken a stance agreeing with these companies. It filed an amicus brief in an appeals court case earlier this year, and sued Arizona, Illinois and Connecticut on Thursday alongside the Department of Justice, arguing that it is the proper regulator and alleging that the states are infringing on its role.

The hearing took place the same day as another hearing at a federal court in Arizona. In that hearing, Kalshi had filed to block state regulators from filing to block the prediction market provider’s products in the state. Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes had previously filed an information alleging criminal charges against Kalshi.

According to the court docket, District Judge MIchael Liburdi heard arguments and is considering the motion.

VICTOR JOECKS: Statewide Nevada primaries to watch this June

Nevada’s June primary is likely to be a low-turnout affair, but there should be high interest in a few statewide races.

Start with the race for attorney general on the Democratic side. Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro is running against Treasurer Zach Conine. It’s unusual for two high-profile Democrats to face each other. You can hear the remnants of the Reid machine groaning.

As Senate majority leader, Cannizzaro has more power. But as a statewide elected official, Conine has a bigger profile. Nevada Democrats who lived here in 2022 have likely already voted for him. It may not seem like much, but that matters.

Cannizzaro has leveraged her position to gain a slew of endorsements and amass a substantial war chest. At the end of last year, she had more than $800,000 cash on hand. Conine had around $650,000 in the bank. That’s sizable. He has some notable endorsements, including Rep. Dina Titus.

Republicans also have a contested race for attorney general. Douglas County Commissioner Danny Tarkanian, the son of legendary UNLV basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian, is running. So is Adriana Guzmán Fralick, who previously served as chief deputy district attorney for Carson City.

A recent poll showed that Tarkanian has a substantial lead, 55–17. Even if you are skeptical of polling promoted by campaigns, this makes sense given his last name and previous runs in Southern Nevada.

Guzmán Fralick recently called for current Attorney General Aaron Ford to sue Gov. Gavin Newsom. She wants “to halt the implementation of California’s fuel supply regulations that directly harm Nevada.”

That is a terrific idea. How many Republican primary voters will find out about it is yet to be determined. Gov. Joe Lombardo has endorsed Guzmán Fralick, but I believe she’ll need more substantial outside help to be competitive.

There’s more at stake here than just stopping a Democrat attorney general from repeatedly suing the Trump administration. If Cannizzaro or Conine wins the general election, either would be well positioned to run for governor in 2030 or 2034.

Republicans have a contested primary for state treasurer. Drew Johnson is a rock-solid fiscal conservative who lost heartbreaking races in 2022 and 2024. His wife, Sarah Johnson, was instrumental in the successful effort to keep boys out of girls’ high school sports. That was one of the biggest conservative victories in Nevada in decades. I believe Democrats defunded her position in the lieutenant governor’s office over her work on this.

The other GOP candidate for treasurer is Jeff Carter, who came to Nevada from Chicago after a long and impressive career in finance. He should have run on his resume, but this year, Carter took a nasty personal swipe at Sarah Johnson. He demeaned her infertility and the price she paid for protecting women’s sports. Those types of attacks may play well in Chicago, but they’re gross. Carter should apologize.

It’ll be a long shot for a Republican to win the secretary of state race, but nominating Jim Marchant would be a major own goal.

Primaries matter, so make sure you vote.
